“``But searching for things and searching for connection with God are vastly different pursuits. The Lord wants us to search for him. Jacob wasn't searching for the Lord. The Lord showed up in the middle of the barren land and made himself known to Jacob. Because if we expend all of our energy looking for a blessing, you might miss the one with a capital o who is right beside you.”

#QuietToHearGod
“The power of this particular text is that despite all of Jacob's striving and reaching and grasping and conniving, It isn't until this moment that the lord speaks to him. The lord speaks to Jacob for the first time here in Genesis 28, and he speaks to him when he's asleep, when he's quieted himself enough to hear from the lord.”

#GraceNotBabel
“This scene, this dream that Jacob has reminds me of another structure that was attempted to be built, to connect heaven and earth. Back in Genesis chapter 11, there was a human effort, a human conniving to build a tower up to the heavens so that they they could ascend to the heavens. The people could ascend to the heavens. And the Tower Of Babel did not go well for the humans. In fact, it was destroyed and the people were scattered and their languages were confused and they went. You can read about that in Genesis 11. But this time, it's not because there was human effort to do it. It was god's gracious revelation of himself that brought this moment to life.”

“When Jacob stopped long enough for the lord to speak to him, when he stopped searching for for for a blessing, to get a blessing, he received one. And a second and a third that carried him the rest of his life. You know, here's what I I would love for you to do this week. Would love for you to take some time to not worry so much about getting a blessing, but to be a blessing.”
