Finding Fulfillment: Trusting God Over Illusions
Summary
### Summary
Today, we explored the concept of "The Illusion of Greener Grass." This idea often leads us to believe that life would be better if we were in different circumstances, whether it be a different job, relationship, or even a different spiritual state. However, this is a deception. The grass appears greener on the other side due to the way light reflects off it, creating an illusion. Similarly, Satan uses deception to make us think that life outside of God's will is better. But the truth is, everything we need is found in Jesus and within the church.
We delved into Psalms 23 and Psalms 37 to understand how God provides for us and why we should trust Him. Psalms 23 reminds us that the Lord is our shepherd, providing all we need and leading us to green pastures and still waters. It emphasizes that God restores our soul and guides us in paths of righteousness. Psalms 37 warns us not to envy the wicked, as their success is temporary and will fade like grass. Instead, we should trust in the Lord, commit our ways to Him, and be patient, knowing that His timing and justice are perfect.
Satan's primary tool is deception. He wants us to believe that the restrictions and boundaries God places in our lives are holding us back, but in reality, they are there to protect us. When we trust in God and delight in His ways, He gives us the desires of our hearts. We must commit our ways to the Lord and rely entirely on Him, not just partially. This full submission allows God to work in our lives in ways we could never achieve on our own.
Patience is another critical aspect of our walk with God. We live in a world that demands instant gratification, but God's timing is always perfect. Waiting on the Lord means trusting that He is working everything out for our good, even when we can't see it. Finally, we must refrain from anger and frustration over the prosperity of the wicked. God's justice will prevail, and those who wait on the Lord will inherit the land.

Devotional
### 5-Day Devotional
Day 1: The Deception of Greener Grass
The illusion of greener grass often tempts us to believe that life would be better if we were in different circumstances. This deception can lead us to think that a different job, relationship, or even a different spiritual state would bring us more happiness. However, this is a trick of the enemy. Just as the grass appears greener on the other side due to the way light reflects off it, Satan uses deception to make us think that life outside of God's will is better. The truth is, everything we need is found in Jesus and within the church. Trusting in God's provision and guidance leads to true fulfillment. [05:16]
Jeremiah 17:7-8 (ESV): "Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit."
Reflection: Think of a situation where you felt the grass was greener on the other side. How can you shift your focus to trust in God's provision and find contentment in your current circumstances?
Day 2: Trust and Commitment
Psalms 37 teaches us to trust in the Lord and commit our ways to Him. This means relying entirely on God, not just partially. Full submission allows God to work in our lives in ways we could never achieve on our own. When we trust in God and delight in His ways, He gives us the desires of our hearts. This requires a deep level of trust and commitment, knowing that God's plans for us are far better than anything we could plan for ourselves. [13:33]
Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV): "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you find yourself holding back from fully committing to God? What steps can you take today to surrender this area to Him?
Day 3: Patience in God's Timing
Waiting on the Lord means trusting that His timing is perfect. In a world that demands instant gratification, we must learn to be patient and trust that God is working everything out for our good, even when we can't see it. Patience is a critical aspect of our walk with God, and it requires us to trust that His plans and timing are always better than our own. [18:20]
Isaiah 40:31 (ESV): "But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."
Reflection: Reflect on a time when you were impatient with God's timing. How can you practice patience and trust in His perfect timing in your current situation?
Day 4: Refrain from Envy and Anger
Envying the wicked and becoming frustrated with their prosperity only leads to anger and evil. God's justice will prevail, and those who wait on the Lord will inherit the land. Our focus should be on our relationship with God, not on the success of others. Psalms 37 warns us not to envy the wicked, as their success is temporary and will fade like grass. Instead, we should trust in the Lord, commit our ways to Him, and be patient, knowing that His timing and justice are perfect. [20:33]
Psalm 73:3-5 (ESV): "For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind."
Reflection: Is there someone whose success you envy? How can you shift your focus from their prosperity to deepening your relationship with God?
Day 5: God's Provision and Protection
Psalms 23 reminds us that the Lord is our shepherd, providing all we need and leading us to green pastures and still waters. God's boundaries are there to protect us, not restrict us. When we trust in Him, He restores our soul and guides us in paths of righteousness. This psalm emphasizes that God provides for us and why we should trust Him. It is a beautiful reminder of God's provision and protection in our lives. [30:03]
Psalm 121:7-8 (ESV): "The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore."
Reflection: How have you experienced God's provision and protection in your life? Take a moment to thank Him for specific instances where He has guided and provided for you.
Quotes
1. "Whether you were on top of the world or you feel like your world is crashing down around you, it really does not matter because He is worthy. Whether I'm sick or whether I'm healed, He's worthy. How I feel has no bearing on whether He's worthy or not because He is always worthy of everything. He's done so much for us, so much for us. We can never repay the debt that we owe, so He is worthy. That should be our saying. That should be something every morning when we wake up, we should roll out of bed saying, you know what? He's worthy. I woke up this morning. That alone is enough to say that He is worthy." [00:58] (60 seconds)
2. "So there's an explanation of why the grass looks greener. It's not really greener, it's just the illusion that it is greener. And I thought about that in the spiritual context, is that Satan knows he has no power over you. See, a lot of times we give Satan too much credit. But he knows his position. He knows that he cannot compete with a Christian that is filled with the Holy Spirit. He knows he has no power over you, so he must deceive you. That is his tools, is deception. And so he wants you to think that the grass is greener on the other side. He wants to give you the illusion of something better, better outside of where God has put you." [04:22] (46 seconds)
3. "Stop looking for greener pastures, you're not going to find one. You're not going to find anything better out there in the world than what you find in here. Everything you need is found in the Lord. It's not my main passage of Scripture that I was going to read today, but as I was studying through this, I came across Psalms 23. Anybody like Psalms 23? Some of the best six verses in the Bible. And I was asking them if they could put this on the screen for us, starting on verse 1 of Psalms 23." [05:16] (33 seconds)
4. "Trust in the Lord and do good. Dwell in the land and be free in faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. I will tell you this, there is safety in the Lord. There is safety in the church. The fences are there to protect us, not to restrict us. When we trust in him and we are aligned with his will in our life, we are much better off. But what Satan likes to do is tell you that you're being held back by those spiritual hedges. Those fences that have been erected, he's saying, that's just keeping you from freedom. That's keeping you from doing what you want. But really, they're there to protect us." [10:51] (39 seconds)
5. "Commit our ways to the Lord literally means that we rely on him. To rely on the Lord means I put 100% of my life in his hands. It's not I'm going to put a little bit over here but I like to control this or I'm going to dedicate 90% of my life to God but I'll keep 10% of it for what I want to do. No, our strength comes when we give 100% of our life to him because when you're out in the world, away from the things of God, you can only do so much. Our strength comes from him, not from our own. When you let God take over your life, it's amazing the doors he will open. It's amazing the opportunities that he will give you that you never could have gotten on your own because God's justice is as certain as the rising sun." [13:33] (51 seconds)
6. "Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him. There's that bad word, that P word, patient. Our world is not patient. Anybody here consider yourself a patient person? I saw one hand go up and I saw his wife drag that hand back down. Truth will find you out. Fret not yourself over the one who prospers in this way, over the man who carries out evil devices. You see, when we are in the pasture of the Lord, we wait on Him. This means we don't make rash decisions. We don't act upon, we don't act upon our own, but we wait on instructions for Him." [16:25] (46 seconds)
7. "Refrain from anger and forsake wrath. Fret not yourself it tends only to evil. For the evildoers shall be cut off but those that wait on the Lord shall inherit the land. One commentary says in reading this passage it would appear that the psalmist anger was caused by his observation that the wicked were prospering and God had not judged them. The prohibition on anger and agitation is repeated as is the reason the promise of the destruction of evildoers. Now I relate with this. This is understandable. And I know it seems cliche and honestly I've tried to work on myself concerning this but it's always easy to talk about how bad everything is." [20:08] (44 seconds)
8. "So yes the world is evil. We all know that. And I don't think we should just stick our heads in the cloud and act like everything is perfect. But what I'm saying is don't get so caught up in the world being bad that your outlook on life just becomes so negative. And that's what these two verses are saying. are talking about because the reality is if you compare good versus evil there is more evil in the world. But we live in a fallen creation. Now one day we will be in a new creation. One day we will be in heaven and everything will be good. There will be no evil." [21:12] (35 seconds)
9. "So we shouldn't become frustrated with the evil in the world because we know that one day God is going to admonish evil. One day evil will be defeated. Our promise is found in verse 9 for the evildoer shall be cut off but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land. I don't know about you but I want to inherit the land. I don't want to be cut off. So that's my hope every day is that you know what? Maybe justice is not happening in the world. Maybe it does seem like evil is winning but I do know that as long as I am waiting on the Lord I'm in line for some land. I'm in line for an inheritance for my heavenly father if I stay the path." [24:00] (44 seconds)
10. "So I will tell you today as I get ready to close the grass may look greener from where you are standing but I promise you it's not. I promise you the best pasture you can be in is the one that God put you in. The best place in your life whether you realize it or not is right where God's got you. Satan knows he only has as much power as you are willing to give him and he knows that he has to deceive you." [29:16] (28 seconds)
