Finding Comfort in Suffering: God's Assurance and Purpose

Summary

### Summary

Tonight, we began our new series in the book of 2 Corinthians, focusing on the theme of comfort in the midst of suffering. Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, writes to the church in Corinth and all the saints in Achaia, emphasizing the grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. He introduces God as the "Father of mercies and the God of all comfort," highlighting that comfort is intrinsic to God's nature. Paul acknowledges that life is filled with tribulations and hardships, but the focus should be on the comfort that God provides rather than the difficulties themselves.

God comforts us through various means: the Holy Spirit, His Word, prayer, and often through friends and fellow believers. This comfort is not selective; it is available in all our tribulations. Importantly, the comfort we receive from God is not just for our benefit but is meant to be shared with others who are in any trouble. Paul stresses that suffering is inevitable in this sin-marred world, but God's comfort is always available to us. He encourages us to use our experiences of God's comfort to comfort others, thereby fulfilling God's purpose.

Paul also reminds us that our ultimate goal as Christians is not our comfort but God's glory. He shares his own experiences of suffering to illustrate that even in the midst of severe trials, God's comfort is abundant. The message is clear: while we will face sufferings, we will also receive God's consolation. Our testimony should not be about the sufferings we endured but about the comfort and glory of God that we experienced through those trials.

### Key Takeaways

1. God's Nature as the Source of Comfort: God is described as the "Father of mercies and the God of all comfort." This means that comfort is intrinsic to His nature. He is not distant or indifferent but is near and desires to comfort us in our tribulations. Understanding this aspect of God's character can transform how we approach our difficulties, knowing that He is always ready to provide comfort. [09:50]

2. Means of Divine Comfort: God comforts us through the Holy Spirit, His Word, prayer, and fellow believers. The Holy Spirit indwells us, providing constant comfort. The Word of God offers solidity and strength, while prayer allows us to connect deeply with God. Friends and fellow believers often serve as God's instruments of comfort, reminding us that we are not alone. [10:57]

3. Comfort in All Tribulations: God's comfort is not selective; it is available in all our tribulations. Paul emphasizes that God comforts us in every trouble, ensuring that we are never left to face our hardships alone. This inclusive promise assures us that no matter the nature or severity of our suffering, God's comfort is always accessible. [14:11]

4. Sharing Comfort with Others: The comfort we receive from God is not just for our benefit but is meant to be shared with others. As we experience God's comfort, we are called to comfort those who are in any trouble. This creates a cycle of divine comfort, where God's comfort flows through us to others, fulfilling His purpose and bringing glory to Him. [15:13]

5. Suffering and Comfort for God's Glory: Our ultimate goal as Christians is not our comfort but God's glory. Paul illustrates that even in severe trials, God's comfort is abundant. Our testimony should focus on the comfort and glory of God rather than the sufferings we endured. This perspective shifts our focus from our hardships to God's faithfulness and His ability to bring good out of every situation. [24:28]

Day 1: God’s Comforting Nature
God is described as the "Father of mercies and the God of all comfort." This means that comfort is intrinsic to His nature. He is not distant or indifferent but is near and desires to comfort us in our tribulations. Understanding this aspect of God's character can transform how we approach our difficulties, knowing that He is always ready to provide comfort. When we face hardships, it is essential to remember that God’s comfort is not just a temporary relief but a profound assurance of His presence and love. This comfort is a reflection of His merciful nature, which is always inclined towards our well-being. [09:50]

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (ESV): "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God."

Reflection: Think of a recent difficulty you faced. How did you experience God’s comfort during that time? How can this understanding of God’s comforting nature change the way you approach future challenges?

Day 2: Channels of Divine Comfort
God comforts us through the Holy Spirit, His Word, prayer, and fellow believers. The Holy Spirit indwells us, providing constant comfort. The Word of God offers solidity and strength, while prayer allows us to connect deeply with God. Friends and fellow believers often serve as God's instruments of comfort, reminding us that we are not alone. Recognizing these channels helps us to be more receptive to God’s comfort and to seek it actively in our daily lives. It also encourages us to be channels of comfort to others, reflecting God’s love and care. [10:57]

John 14:26 (ESV): "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you."

Reflection: Identify one way you have experienced God’s comfort through the Holy Spirit, His Word, prayer, or fellow believers. How can you be more intentional in seeking comfort through these channels?

Day 3: Universal Comfort in Tribulations
God's comfort is not selective; it is available in all our tribulations. Paul emphasizes that God comforts us in every trouble, ensuring that we are never left to face our hardships alone. This inclusive promise assures us that no matter the nature or severity of our suffering, God's comfort is always accessible. This understanding can bring immense peace and hope, knowing that there is no situation too difficult for God’s comfort to reach us. It encourages us to lean on God in every circumstance, trusting in His unfailing comfort. [14:11]

Psalm 34:18-19 (ESV): "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all."

Reflection: Reflect on a time when you felt overwhelmed by a particular tribulation. How did you experience God’s comfort in that situation? How can this assurance of universal comfort help you face future challenges?

Day 4: Sharing God’s Comfort
The comfort we receive from God is not just for our benefit but is meant to be shared with others. As we experience God's comfort, we are called to comfort those who are in any trouble. This creates a cycle of divine comfort, where God's comfort flows through us to others, fulfilling His purpose and bringing glory to Him. By sharing God’s comfort, we become instruments of His love and care, helping others to experience His presence in their lives. This act of sharing also deepens our own experience of God’s comfort, as we see its impact on others. [15:13]

Galatians 6:2 (ESV): "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ."

Reflection: Think of someone in your life who is currently going through a difficult time. How can you share the comfort you have received from God with them today?

Day 5: Suffering and Comfort for God’s Glory
Our ultimate goal as Christians is not our comfort but God's glory. Paul illustrates that even in severe trials, God's comfort is abundant. Our testimony should focus on the comfort and glory of God rather than the sufferings we endured. This perspective shifts our focus from our hardships to God's faithfulness and His ability to bring good out of every situation. By glorifying God through our experiences of suffering and comfort, we bear witness to His greatness and draw others to Him. [24:28]

2 Corinthians 4:17-18 (ESV): "For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal."

Reflection: How can you shift your focus from your current sufferings to the comfort and glory of God? What steps can you take to ensure that your testimony highlights God’s faithfulness and comfort?

Quotes

1. "The truth is, the life in which we live, we find some tough times. We find some hard roads. Every person here could speak. We can speak of difficulties that you have faced as you've walked through life. And I think it's important that we don't necessarily spend all of our time dwelling on those, but at the same time, we do recognize those, and we do seek the Lord in helping us as we walk through those." 2. "Comfort is part of who God is. Look at verse number three. Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort. Can I say to you tonight, God seated on the throne in heaven, who is a God of all comfort. And we find here, it's in his nature." [09:50] (22 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

3. "Though God the Father is seated on the throne in heaven, we as believers have the Holy Spirit to indwell us, and to comfort us. Not only that, I think about how God gives us His Word to comfort us. Can I tell you, when I look across the world, and I look across the nation, and I look across the community, and sometimes I look across my own life, and I see unsteady ground, there's something that I can always come back to for comfort, and that is the solidity of the Word of God." 4. "He often uses friends who give comfort. And we're going to talk about that as we continue through the passage of Scripture, how important it is to comfort one another. Here's the other thing I've noticed God does. Sometimes God's not at the right time. I believe God works in that. I truly believe that there are divine appointments that God uses. By the way, sometimes He might even use you to fulfill one of these." [12:49] (23 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

5. "God doesn't just comfort you to just be a... a receiver of that comfort? God doesn't give to you comfort just so that you can take it. I've heard... Now, this is dealing with a different topic altogether as far as not dealing with comfort, but I heard somebody say this. God often gives to those He knows that He can give through. This is true of comfort. Notice in this text that we've been ourselves have been comforted with God." [15:13] (30 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

6. "Comfort is necessary in life because suffering is inevitable. We talk about this on Sunday morning about persecution will come. By the way, the persecution that receives a blessing is a persecution that comes for Christ's sake. The persecution that comes for righteousness' sake. But can I tell you this? Persecution, suffering, tribulations, they are inevitable. You face them and you're going to face them. As long as we're on this sin-sick planet called Earth that is filled with the repercussions of sin, can I tell you this? Suffering is going to be present. So comfort is necessary." 7. "Our highest goal as a Christian is not our comfort. Our highest goal as a Christian is God's glory. And as we look at Paul, as we look at his writings, let's look at verse 7, and our hope of you is steadfast knowing that ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation. Paul is reminding them that we're going to face sufferings, but the good news, if you face sufferings, you're also going to receive the consolation, you're going to receive the comfort that we receive." 8. "Paul is writing as someone who knew what he was talking about. Paul faced suffering. In fact, as we go through 2 Corinthians in chapter 2, in chapter 4, in chapter 6, in chapter 7, in chapter 11, in chapter 12, Paul talks about a lot of those sufferings that he faced. And understand this, Paul is sharing the details of his sufferings and the sufferings that Paul faced are far beyond his knowledge. On sufferings that we have faced and as we look at those sufferings that he faced, his message is not a message of let me tell you about my suffering. His message is a message of let me tell you about the comfort that God gives." [25:19] (41 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

9. "As we go through sufferings, and we come out comforted, our message is not, let me tell you what all I've gone through. Our message should be, let me tell you what God did for me. Now, I say all of this as Paul gave his testimony. He shared the details, but his message was the glory of God. And I want to end on this point tonight because it would be easy for us to dismiss Paul's writings as saying, well, he's just got this super positive mentality that everything's just going to be sunshiny, and no matter what I go through, it's just, it's just sunshiny. No, he details his difficult sufferings, but through it all, he sought to give glory to God." [26:31] (38 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

10. "Can I encourage you tonight? Look to the God of comfort. Seek to share that God of comfort with other people, and never forget the goal is the glory of God. And sometimes what God uses to get glory is to comfort us in the midst of our suffering." [27:18] (18 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
