1. "The truth is, the life in which we live, we find some tough times. We find some hard roads. Every person here could speak. We can speak of difficulties that you have faced as you've walked through life. And I think it's important that we don't necessarily spend all of our time dwelling on those, but at the same time, we do recognize those, and we do seek the Lord in helping us as we walk through those."

2. "Comfort is part of who God is. Look at verse number three. Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort. Can I say to you tonight, God seated on the throne in heaven, who is a God of all comfort. And we find here, it's in his nature."

3. "Though God the Father is seated on the throne in heaven, we as believers have the Holy Spirit to indwell us, and to comfort us. Not only that, I think about how God gives us His Word to comfort us. Can I tell you, when I look across the world, and I look across the nation, and I look across the community, and sometimes I look across my own life, and I see unsteady ground, there's something that I can always come back to for comfort, and that is the solidity of the Word of God."

4. "He often uses friends who give comfort. And we're going to talk about that as we continue through the passage of Scripture, how important it is to comfort one another. Here's the other thing I've noticed God does. Sometimes God's not at the right time. I believe God works in that. I truly believe that there are divine appointments that God uses. By the way, sometimes He might even use you to fulfill one of these."

5. "God doesn't just comfort you to just be a... a receiver of that comfort? God doesn't give to you comfort just so that you can take it. I've heard... Now, this is dealing with a different topic altogether as far as not dealing with comfort, but I heard somebody say this. God often gives to those He knows that He can give through. This is true of comfort. Notice in this text that we've been ourselves have been comforted with God."

6. "Comfort is necessary in life because suffering is inevitable. We talk about this on Sunday morning about persecution will come. By the way, the persecution that receives a blessing is a persecution that comes for Christ's sake. The persecution that comes for righteousness' sake. But can I tell you this? Persecution, suffering, tribulations, they are inevitable. You face them and you're going to face them. As long as we're on this sin-sick planet called Earth that is filled with the repercussions of sin, can I tell you this? Suffering is going to be present. So comfort is necessary."

7. "Our highest goal as a Christian is not our comfort. Our highest goal as a Christian is God's glory. And as we look at Paul, as we look at his writings, let's look at verse 7, and our hope of you is steadfast knowing that ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation. Paul is reminding them that we're going to face sufferings, but the good news, if you face sufferings, you're also going to receive the consolation, you're going to receive the comfort that we receive."

8. "Paul is writing as someone who knew what he was talking about. Paul faced suffering. In fact, as we go through 2 Corinthians in chapter 2, in chapter 4, in chapter 6, in chapter 7, in chapter 11, in chapter 12, Paul talks about a lot of those sufferings that he faced. And understand this, Paul is sharing the details of his sufferings and the sufferings that Paul faced are far beyond his knowledge. On sufferings that we have faced and as we look at those sufferings that he faced, his message is not a message of let me tell you about my suffering. His message is a message of let me tell you about the comfort that God gives."

9. "As we go through sufferings, and we come out comforted, our message is not, let me tell you what all I've gone through. Our message should be, let me tell you what God did for me. Now, I say all of this as Paul gave his testimony. He shared the details, but his message was the glory of God. And I want to end on this point tonight because it would be easy for us to dismiss Paul's writings as saying, well, he's just got this super positive mentality that everything's just going to be sunshiny, and no matter what I go through, it's just, it's just sunshiny. No, he details his difficult sufferings, but through it all, he sought to give glory to God."

10. "Can I encourage you tonight? Look to the God of comfort. Seek to share that God of comfort with other people, and never forget the goal is the glory of God. And sometimes what God uses to get glory is to comfort us in the midst of our suffering."
