Finding Balance: Prioritizing God and Relationships

Summary

In our fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in the rush and forget the importance of slowing down and prioritizing our relationship with God and others. Reflecting on the story of the prodigal son and the contrasting lives of Mary and Martha, we are reminded of the need to pause and focus on what truly matters. Despite the busyness of life, as exemplified by my recent experiences with home renovations, it's crucial to make time for God and people. This is beautifully illustrated by Mike, who, despite being under pressure, took the time to share the gospel with a stranger, leading to an unexpected blessing.

Jesus exemplified a life of balance, always making time for prayer and people, as seen throughout the Book of Luke. His life was not about rushing but about being present and intentional. The disciples, recognizing the depth of Jesus' prayer life, asked Him to teach them how to pray. Jesus responded with what we know as the Lord's Prayer, not as a formula to be mindlessly repeated, but as a guide to meaningful communication with God.

The prayer begins with addressing God as "Father," or "Abba," which translates to "Daddy," introducing a revolutionary intimacy with God. This intimacy is foundational to our prayer life, transforming it from a self-centered list of requests to a heartfelt conversation with our Heavenly Father. The prayer continues with a focus on God's holiness and kingdom, reminding us to prioritize His will over our own desires.

Furthermore, the prayer teaches us to depend on God for our daily needs, acknowledging our reliance on Him for even the simplest provisions. It also emphasizes the importance of forgiveness, both receiving it from God and extending it to others, as a prerequisite for maintaining a close relationship with Him. Lastly, it calls us to seek strength to resist temptation, recognizing that while temptations will always exist, God provides the strength to overcome them.

Key Takeaways:

- Prioritizing People and God: In the midst of life's busyness, it's essential to prioritize time for God and others. Like Mike, who paused his work to share the gospel, we must be willing to stop and engage with those around us, trusting that God will take care of the rest. [04:33]

- Intimacy with God: Jesus introduced a new level of intimacy with God by teaching us to address Him as "Abba" or "Daddy." This personal relationship transforms our prayer life from a list of requests to a heartfelt conversation, rooted in love and reverence. [12:25]

- The Holiness of God: Our prayers should reflect a deep concern for God's reputation and holiness. We should desire for His name to be revered and His kingdom to come, aligning our hearts with His purposes and longing for a world that honors Him. [19:20]

- Dependence on God: Acknowledging our dependence on God for daily sustenance humbles us and reminds us of our mortality. This recognition fosters gratitude and a deeper reliance on Him for all our needs. [24:21]

- Strength to Resist Temptation: While temptations are inevitable, God provides the strength to resist them. Our prayers should focus on seeking His strength to overcome, rather than asking for the removal of temptations, fostering spiritual growth and resilience. [31:08]

Day 1: Prioritizing Presence Over Productivity
In a world that constantly demands our attention, it is easy to become consumed by tasks and responsibilities, neglecting the deeper connections with God and those around us. The story of the prodigal son and the lives of Mary and Martha serve as reminders of the importance of pausing to focus on what truly matters. Despite the busyness of life, as illustrated by personal experiences with home renovations, it is crucial to make time for God and people. This is exemplified by Mike, who, despite being under pressure, took the time to share the gospel with a stranger, leading to an unexpected blessing. [04:33]

Luke 10:41-42 (ESV): "But the Lord answered her, 'Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.'"

Reflection: Identify one task or responsibility you can set aside today to spend intentional time with God or someone important in your life. How can you make this a regular practice?

Day 2: Embracing Intimacy with God
Jesus introduced a revolutionary intimacy with God by teaching us to address Him as "Abba" or "Daddy." This personal relationship transforms our prayer life from a self-centered list of requests to a heartfelt conversation rooted in love and reverence. By approaching God with this level of intimacy, we are invited into a deeper relationship that prioritizes His presence over our own desires. This shift in perspective allows us to experience a more meaningful and fulfilling prayer life. [12:25]

Romans 8:15 (ESV): "For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, 'Abba! Father!'"

Reflection: How can you cultivate a more intimate relationship with God in your daily prayer life? What changes can you make to ensure your prayers are heartfelt conversations rather than mere requests?

Day 3: Revering God's Holiness
Our prayers should reflect a deep concern for God's reputation and holiness. We are called to desire for His name to be revered and His kingdom to come, aligning our hearts with His purposes and longing for a world that honors Him. This focus on God's holiness shifts our perspective from our own needs to His greater plan, encouraging us to live in a way that reflects His character and brings glory to His name. [19:20]

Isaiah 6:3 (ESV): "And one called to another and said: 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!'"

Reflection: In what ways can you actively honor God's holiness in your daily life? How can your actions and words reflect His character to those around you?

Day 4: Acknowledging Our Dependence on God
Acknowledging our dependence on God for daily sustenance humbles us and reminds us of our mortality. This recognition fosters gratitude and a deeper reliance on Him for all our needs. By trusting in God's provision, we are freed from the anxiety of self-sufficiency and invited into a life of faith and gratitude. This dependence on God is not a sign of weakness but a testament to His faithfulness and our trust in His care. [24:21]

Matthew 6:11 (ESV): "Give us this day our daily bread."

Reflection: What is one area of your life where you struggle to rely on God for provision? How can you practice gratitude and trust in His faithfulness today?

Day 5: Seeking Strength to Resist Temptation
While temptations are inevitable, God provides the strength to resist them. Our prayers should focus on seeking His strength to overcome, rather than asking for the removal of temptations, fostering spiritual growth and resilience. By relying on God's strength, we are empowered to face challenges with confidence, knowing that He is with us in every trial. This reliance on God not only helps us resist temptation but also deepens our relationship with Him as we experience His power in our lives. [31:08]

1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV): "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it."

Reflection: Identify a temptation you are currently facing. How can you actively seek God's strength to resist it and grow in spiritual resilience?

Quotes

I mean here's a guy with some serious Faith a week ago okay we're and he's doing mostly electrical work cuzz I'm clueless on that and and he's you know wiring and he's trying to figure it all out and then this guy knocks on the door okay now this is a week ago I mean it's crunch time we got to get this stuff done this guy knocks on the door and asks if he can use the phone now that's a pretty rare thing nowadays I mean honestly when's the last time someone knocked on the door and asked if he could use your phone and everyone's got a cell phone. [00:02:27]

Mike thinks you know this is of God I need to talk to this guy and Mike does the right thing he stops you know his electrical work and he starts talking to this guy and starts sharing about Jesus and telling him about what God's done in his life and I'm in the other room hanging dry while listening to this conversation thinking you know what what an awesome guy you know he knows how hard is he knows man we're we're under the gun here but he stops to talk and just talking to this guy sharing with him. [00:03:00]

I picture him taking the time knowing that you know what I'm going to get done what I need to get done I picture him being busy but what we read in the scriptures he always had time to pray he always had time for people I mean all through the Book of Luke where it seems like every chapter start the phrase okay and he was praying and Jesus was praying you know chapter 3 has him praying at the at the baptism chapter five has him uh in the wilderness praying for 40 days. [00:05:00]

Jesus took time to pray to the father Jesus the son of God that was a serious priority in his life Jesus Took time for people I hope you're doing that hope you're slowing down finding those times like like mik like Steve Ferrar were saying last week you know just just creating a sanctuary creating a place like I talked about that that one lady Susanna Wesley who just covered herself with a blanket so her kids would leave her alone she had a little Sanctuary just under that blanket that's all she had with 19 kids you know just I'm going to get my time with God. [00:05:58]

Jesus introduces something that was UN heard of in that day he was introducing intimacy with God you got to understand we take that for granted we talk about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ we talk about a personal relationship with God but that was new that's why it's like behold what manner of love the father has lavished on us that we should be called sons of God he gave him the right to become children of God understand when Jesus was died on the cross and that Temple that veil was torn born it was about this new relationship this intimacy where we can call him dad. [00:12:28]

I believe one of the reasons why I am alive right now and on this Earth one of my purposes and desires while I am on this planet is to raise people's respect level for God I I I just feel like it is it is it is sick the way we talk about God nowadays and we treat him like he's just a little Genie we stick in our pocket and we pull out when we need him and we yell at him when he doesn't give us what what we want. [00:13:09]

I want people so badly to understand man God is a God to be reckoned with he's a God to be feared man to understand a holy God and so to call that holy God dad was very hard for me and it will be for some of you but I I looked at scripture and I said said I that's what Jesus says is Daddy and you know what there is a tremendous security when you're able to call him that let me think about this there's a being right now in heaven. [00:14:38]

I want your name that's your reputation to be holy set apart I want the people on this Earth to see that you're a holy God that you're sacred Dad I'm sick of the way everyone on this Earth they they talk about you like you're not even there they they question Your Existence I go to school and they go oh he doesn't even exist God I'm sick of that I don't like the way they talk about you I don't like the way people go to church you know and they they come and they worship and they go back and they totally just disobey your commands they treat your commands like they're optional. [00:18:08]

I want your name to be hallowood would you do things so people will lift you up because I love you Dad and I want people to speak highly of you I want your name to be hallowed sacred I wanted to be the way it was back then when they wouldn't even say your name because it was so holy so precious and they saw you as someone to be feared dad I want that is that what your prayers sound like maybe maybe you're some of those very people who you treat God's commands like options like well maybe I'll do it maybe I won't. [00:19:49]

Give means keep on giving day by day our food now this is totally foreign to us I mean I highly doubt anyone in this room woke up this morning and you prayed to God and said God would you please please just give me something to eat today how many you guys prayed that this morning it's so foreign to us it's like well just go to the fridge you know if I'm homeless I'll just go to the you know go to Caren share I'll go you know we'll get food but could God take it all away from us could he do it today could he take away your ability to eat. [00:22:45]

Lead us not into temptation now I want you to understand something about this phrase lead us not into temptation it it literally means cause us not to succumb to our Temptation lead us so that we don't we don't go into what tempts us that we don't yield to our Temptation it is not saying take away everything that tempts me so I can walk through life and nothing will tempt me that's very important because I've had people come to my office and go I prayed that God would take away my desire for drugs and it didn't happen it's his fault I'm angry at him. [00:30:13]

I don't know what uh what your temptation is I don't know what uh what it is that you might struggle with but you got to understand something that that Jesus teaching us how to pray he doesn't say God make it so that nothing on the earth tempts me okay we're all going to have different Temptations It's saying God give me the strength so I don't yield I don't succumb I don't go into it and some of you even as I talk about that one area you know you're playing with fire right now every year every year there are couples in the church where you just say no not them sure enough I'm just saying it's not worth it you're going to give up intimacy with God.
