How to Find God's Purpose for Your Life (Start Here)

Devotional
Day 1: Breathing Under the Father’s Gaze
You exist because God delights in you. Like a parent watching their child’s chest rise and fall in sleep, God finds joy simply in your being. This foundational truth anchors your worth: you were planned for divine pleasure before you achieved anything, before you could earn approval. Worship begins here – not with songs or sermons, but with receiving the love that called you into existence. Every breath becomes an act of trust in the One who shaped your lungs. [06:55]
“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:13-14, ESV)
Reflection: Where do you struggle to believe God delights in you simply as you are? How might embracing this truth shift your approach to prayer today?
Day 2: Adopted into the Earthquake-Proof Family
God designed you for unshakable belonging. Just as buildings need foundations to withstand tremors, your soul needs the church family to survive life’s quakes. This isn’t about perfect people, but imperfect believers practicing eternal relationships. Your spiritual family outlasts bloodlines – it’s the training ground for loving difficult people as you’ll love perfected saints in eternity. [14:11]
“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.” (Ephesians 2:19, ESV)
Reflection: Which relationship in your church family feels most challenging? What one small step could take that connection deeper this week?
Day 3: Sandpaper Saints Shaping Christlikeness
God uses irritating people as holy sandpaper. That coworker, that neighbor, that fellow believer who grates your soul – they’re divinely appointed tools to smooth your rough edges. Just as Jesus learned obedience through suffering, you learn love through loving the unlovely. Every friction-filled interaction becomes a workshop for growing patience, kindness, and grace. [21:47]
“But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.” (Luke 6:27-28, ESV)
Reflection: Who in your life feels like “sandpaper” right now? How might praying blessings over them reshape both of you?
Day 4: Your Life as a Thank-You Note
True service flows from stunned gratitude. When you grasp that every heartbeat is an unearned gift, ministry becomes the natural response – not obligation, but overflow. Your unique mix of talents, pain, and story forms a custom-shaped instrument for healing others. Like the healed beggar who couldn’t stop testifying, your service becomes your living “thank you” to the Healer. [31:10]
“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” (1 Peter 4:10, ESV)
Reflection: What specific hardship in your past could become a bridge to serve someone facing similar struggles?
Day 5: Bearing Fruit That Outlives You
Spiritual maturity isn’t measured by knowledge, but by reproduction. Just as apple trees exist to make more apple trees, you’re designed to create more Christ-followers. This isn’t about preaching on street corners, but about letting your transformed life spark holy curiosity. Your mission field includes the grocery clerk, the barista, the neighbor – anyone still breathing needs to hear your story of grace. [35:50]
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19, ESV)
Reflection: Who in your orbit needs to hear how God met you in your deepest failure? What’s one way to share that story this month?
Sermon Summary
God gives every life a purpose. Life does not begin by looking within, because no created thing can explain itself. God, the Creator, reveals purpose through talking to him and reading his owner’s manual. Christ is the place where people find out who they are and what they are living for, because everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him.
Life on earth is a temporary assignment, the get-ready stage, the warm-up act, and the dress rehearsal for eternity. God uses this short life to prepare people for what lasts forever. The five purposes are not random church activities. The five purposes are what God intends his people to practice now and continue forever.
God planned people for his pleasure. Worship is letting God love them and loving him back. God takes pleasure in his children even when they are simply being who he made them to be, like a father watching his children sleep. Worship is more than music; worship is any expression of love for God. Worry reveals a heart focused on problems and insecurities, while worship turns attention toward God’s greatness and love.
God formed people for his family. Fellowship is learning to love other believers as an eternal family, not merely attending a gathering. The church is the support and foundation of truth, and a spiritual family provides support when the earthquakes of life hit. God calls believers to make worship and fellowship habits, because heaven will be filled with love for God and love for his family.
God created people to become like Christ. Discipleship is spiritual growth into Christlike character, not simply gaining information or finding a comfortable life. God cares more about what a person is becoming than the job, career, or title that person holds. Pain, conflict, and suffering often become God’s tools for producing love, joy, peace, patience, and the rest of Christ’s character. God does not waste scars; God can turn scars into beauty marks.
God shaped people to serve him by serving others. Ministry is the contribution each person makes through gifts, abilities, personality, and opportunities God planned in advance. Gratitude, not guilt, becomes the right response to God’s blessings.
God made people for a mission. Witness is passing on the good news of God’s grace so that the chain does not end with one generation. Acts 2 displays the whole pattern: belief, baptism, commitment to the church, discipleship, fellowship, ministry, worship, and a growing number of people being saved.

Key Takeaways
1. Purpose begins with the Creator [00:03:14] God alone can explain the purpose of a human life because God alone made that life. Self-examination can expose confusion, desires, and wounds, but it cannot author a final reason for existence. Christ gives identity and purpose their true center. [03:14]
2. Worship displaces the grip of worry [00:10:38] Worship fixes attention on God’s love, power, and presence rather than on personal insecurity. Worry shrinks life down to problems that seem bigger than God. Worship does not deny trouble, but it puts trouble in its proper place before God. [10:38]
3. Spiritual family requires chosen commitment [00:13:31] God does not design his children to survive the earthquakes of life alone. Fellowship becomes real when believers choose a church family, receive support, and offer encouragement. Love for God’s family prepares believers for the eternal family gathering still to come. [13:31]
4. Pain can form Christlike character [00:19:16] God’s goal is not mere comfort but Christlikeness. Love grows among unlovable people, joy grows in grief, and peace grows under pressure. God can use the exact opposite situation to build the fruit that easy circumstances never require. [19:16]
5. Maturity reproduces the good news [00:35:50] God gives every believer a mission to pass on the grace received in Christ. Spiritual maturity cannot remain private, because living fruit reproduces. Witness becomes an act of gratitude and a refusal to let the good news end with one person.
Matthew 22:37–39 “And he said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” [09:43]
Acts 2:41–47 “So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” [37:37]
Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” [28:43]
Colossians 1:16 “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.” [04:04]
Observation questions
According to Colossians 1:16, what does the verse say about where all things came from and whom they were made for?
In Matthew 22:37–39, what are the two directions of love Jesus commands, and what parts of a person are named in loving God? [09:43]
In Acts 2:41–47, what did the first believers devote themselves to, and what did they do together in everyday life? [38:01]
According to Ephesians 2:10, who prepared the good works, and what are believers called to do with them? [28:43]
Interpretation questions
If all things were created through Christ and for Christ, how does that change the way a believer looks for purpose beyond personal preferences, career plans, or success? [04:16]
Jesus calls love for God the first commandment and love for neighbor the second. Why do worship and fellowship belong together rather than being two unrelated parts of Christian life? [15:39]
Acts 2 describes believers learning Scripture, sharing life, meeting needs, worshiping, and seeing people saved. What does this show about a healthy church family’s priorities? [38:08]
Ephesians 2:10 says believers are God’s workmanship, created for good works prepared in advance. How can this truth move a believer from serving out of guilt to serving out of gratitude? [31:04]
Application questions
Where have you recently been trying to find your identity or purpose mainly by looking within yourself—through feelings, accomplishments, relationships, or plans? What would it look like to bring that question honestly to God in prayer and Scripture? [03:14]
Worship is more than singing; it is expressing love to God in many ways. What is one simple practice this week—silence, gratitude, giving, serving, or prayer—that could help turn your attention from worry toward God? [10:07]
When worry has been strong lately, what problem or insecurity has been filling your thoughts? How could remembering God’s greatness and love change the way you face that specific concern? [10:45]
God forms believers for his family, and fellowship becomes real through chosen commitment. What is one way you could receive support from this group or offer meaningful encouragement to someone in the group this week? [14:14]
Think about a difficult situation, conflict, or loss you are facing or have faced. Which Christlike quality—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, or self-control—might God be forming through it? [21:03]
What gifts, abilities, experiences, or opportunities has God given you that could meet a real need in someone else’s life? What is one small step you could take to serve this week? [29:35]
Who first helped you hear or understand the good news of God’s grace? Is there one person you could pray for, encourage, invite, or speak with so that the good news does not stop with you? [33:46]
Sermon Clips
God's goal is not to make you comfortable. God's goal is to make you like Christ. And we don't change when we see the light. We change when we feel the heat. The greatest lessons in your life, you will learn out of pain. I have learned nothing from success. Zero, zip, nada. I have learned nothing from fame. Everything I've learned in life, I learned through pain, conflict, and suffering. It's the greater teacher. [00:19:16]
The opposite of worship is worry. Worry is the warning sign you stopped worshiping. Worry is the sign you got to focus on you, not on God. So every day you have a choice every single minute of your life. Am I going to worry or am I going to worship? If you worship, you won't worry. If you worry, you won't worship. One or two will be in your brain all the time. [00:10:45]
The only way if I held up an invention, you would know what the purpose of that invention is is either A talk to the inventor, the creator who made it, or b read the owner's manual. That's the only way you'd know. The only way you'll ever know your purpose in life is a talk to the creator who made you and read the owner's manual. [00:03:14]
You weren't just put on this earth to take up space, use resources, breathe, use water, retire, and die. No, no, no. You were put here to make a difference. You were put here to make a contribution. You were put here to make an impact with your life. God planned for you to do certain things with your life, to make the world a better place. [00:00:00]
let God love you. And your second part of that job is you to learn to love him back. And the more you understand how much God loves you, the more you're going to love him. When you say, "I don't love God enough," that's not your problem. The problem is you don't understand how much he loves you. [00:08:32]
Now, let me just summarize this. You're made by God and you're made for God. Until you understand that, life's never going to make sense. You were made to last forever. God has long range plans for your life. You weren't made for 80 years on earth. You're made for trillions of years in eternity. [00:04:23]
once you understand this third purpose, a whole lot of life's going to make a lot more sense, particularly all the problems and the trials and the troubles you go through because God wants you to grow up spiritually. His goal isn't to make life comfortable for you here on earth. That's heaven. That's coming someday. This is the school. This is where you're learning. This is where you want to grow in character. And he sent Jesus Christ to be the model of what he wants every woman and what he wants every man to become. [00:16:09]
Worship. Worship is letting God love you and loving him back. Anytime you're expressing love to God, you're worshiping. Worshiping a lot of people think is music. Music is a way to worship. But you can worship in silence. You can worship in giving. You can worship in listening. You can worship in a hundred different ways. Worship is simply expressing my love to God. [00:10:07]
God made me for a mission. First, God puts you on earth to know him, then to learn some things, then to become some things, and then to do some things. God has some things for you to do with your life. And that doing part is called your mission. [00:32:00]
Now, becoming like Christ is a journey. It's going to take your entire life. You're not going to become like Christ overnight. I'm still not there. But I can say like Paul, "Thank God I'm not what I used to be. Thank God I am what I am right now. Thank God I'm not what I'm going to be. And that's true with you too. It is a journey. [00:23:18]
You weren't just put on this earth to take up space, use resources, breathe, use water, retire, and die. No, no, no. You were put here to make a difference. You were put here to make a contribution. You were put here to make an impact with your life. God planned for you to do certain things with your life to make the world a better place. [00:27:18]
If you want to know the purpose of your life, you have to begin with God. God has never created anything without a purpose. No plant is without purpose. Every plant has a purpose. Every animal has a purpose. Every rock, every tree has a purpose. Every human being, if your heart is beating, there's a purpose for your life. Since you're alive, it means God isn't through with his purpose for you. [00:01:56]
God never meant for you to go through life all alone. God hates loneliness. The very first thing God said was wrong with earth was that it is not good for man to be alone. God hates loneliness. I'm not whether you marry or not, you need a family. And the spiritual family, as we talked about last week, is going to outlast your physical family cuz it's eternal. [00:12:07]
Worship, fellowship, disciplehip, ministry, your ministry. Not everybody's a pastor, but everybody has a ministry. It's the way you serve God by serving others. It's the way you make your contribution to the world. It's the way you leave the world a better place. [00:29:10]
God, created everything. And it is for your pleasure that they exist and were created." You were made so God could love you. You were made for his pleasure. If God hadn't wanted to love you, you would not exist. You were made for God's pleasure. [00:05:55]
