Restoring Perspective: Finding God After Spiritual Burnout

Elijah’s story in 1 Kings 19 shows how a man can call down fire from heaven, outrun a chariot, and then wind up under a broom tree saying, “God, I’m done.” Jezebel’s threat did not become bigger than God, but Elijah’s perspective got messed up. His spiritual glasses got dirty, and reality became clouded by fear, exhaustion, and isolation.

Elijah’s crash reminds God’s people that nobody is immune from dark places. Some people have never had their perspective get cloudy, some have been there, and some will get there again. Elijah had been busy doing amazing things for God, but he had not been spending enough time with God. Human beings are not human doings, and identity cannot rest in accomplishing things, fixing everything, or carrying every burden.

Elijah’s words, “I, even I, am the only one left,” reveal a skewed perspective. God had thousands Elijah did not know about, and God already had Elisha on the way. The lie that says, “If I don’t do it, nobody else will,” either reveals a failure to train others or a failure to see God at work beyond one person. Scripture corrects another common misunderstanding. God does not promise never to give anyone more than they can bear. Paul himself was “utterly burdened beyond” his strength, so that he despaired of life itself. God allows burdens too great for human strength in order to teach dependence on “God who raises the dead.” Jesus Christ remains the way of escape, not self-sufficiency.

God meets Elijah’s darkness with mercy. God gives him a nap, a snack, and food for a journey too great for him. God still gives food for the journey through His Word, prayer, music, quietness, and people who gather around hurting souls. God was not in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but in the low whisper. The noise and distraction of life can make that whisper hard to hear.

Job’s confession brings the matter home: “I once lived by rumors of you. I have it all firsthand.” Jesus has not changed when life gets dark. The light of the world, the bread of life, and living water still meet people whose perspective has gotten out of line. God brings hope, help, healing, and refreshment even in the darkest places.
