Come Back Home: Finding God When Dreams Fail

God has wired human beings with core soul hungers, real love, identity, freedom, purpose, meaning, security. Those hungers are good breadcrumbs, meant to drive the heart toward the only God who can finally and fully satisfy them. The trouble begins when good hungers get handed over to the wrong hopes and dreams, because those dreams may look shiny and still lead in the completely wrong direction.

The Greatest Showman and Mark 10 both put people on display who are chasing the wrong dream. PT Barnum’s dream starts in poverty, rejection, and the stinging voice of Charity’s father, “She’ll come running back.” That voice echoes through his whole life, and Barnum tries to silence it with money, applause, success, serious art, and the respect of the wealthy elite. James and John carry their own version of the same hunger when they ask Jesus for the seats at his right and left in glory. Their dream is not a circus, but it is still comfort, status, authority, and greatness on their own terms.

Jesus refuses to hand James and John a blank check, because they do not know what they are asking. The road to Jerusalem is not a coronation parade in the way they imagine. It is the road to suffering, crucifixion, and resurrection. Jesus does not rebuke the desire for greatness itself. He redefines greatness from the ground up: “Not so with you.” Greatness in the kingdom comes through serving, and first place belongs to the slave of all.

Barnum’s story keeps singing the same warning: “Never enough.” All the shine of a thousand spotlights, towers of gold, the whole world in the hands, still too little. Isaiah 55 says the same thing with sharper grace: “Why spend money on what is not bread? Why waste your labor on what does not satisfy?” Family, home, success, and dreams may be good things, but none of them can become ultimate things without crushing the soul.

Hollywood’s best answer is, “Come back home.” That answer is beautiful, but it is also too small, because earthly home is often messy, painful, unsafe, or broken. Jesus offers the deeper home the heart was made for. The Father and the Son come to make their home in the one who loves and obeys Christ. God’s final desire is a dwelling place among his people, where every tear is wiped away and every single thing is made new.
