We are contending for trust over fear. We are contending for stewardship over the real question is not how much do you have? The question is, who has you? If God had to increase your wealth, will it decrease your commitment to the farm? You see, Mammon Mammon promises security, but God promises himself. Money promises you security and independence, but God says, drink from me. Abide in me. You will always serve what you trust, and you'll always trust what you treasure.
Money is not evil. The love is the problem. You see, it comes down to affection. You see, I can be greedy with a little, but I can be pure with much. You know, Jesus speaks about the deceitfulness of riches in in Mark four verse 19. He says, riches deceive. They promise security. They whisper independency. And they subtly replace the reliance of God. And then there's that parable in Luke 12 where Jesus talks about the rich fool. Have you guys read the one? Have you? Wow.
The promise is not luxury. The promise is sufficiency.
Debt and bondage, Proverbs 22 verse seven. Just as the rich rule the poor, the borrower is a servant to the lender. And so the Bible describes death as enslavement. Right? And modern culture markets it as the lifestyle. And and not all death is is bad. Not all death is sin. Can I say that? But bondage is dangerous. Normalizing bondage is dangerous when it comes to financial debt and financial sin. You see, God's financial instructions about finances is freedom. He wants us to be free. He doesn't want us to be bound by debt. You know, and sure, buying a house, cash, we can't do that. We need we need the bank.
Because promise does not override principles. In Luke chapter 16 verse 11, Jesus says, and if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches of heaven? If you are untrustworthy with worldly wealth, why in this green planet will God give you more? For example, if I give Seth, my son, a $100 for Thak Shop, and I say to him, I want R80 change.
Money reveals what worship songs can hide. It reveals your heart. It reveals your heart, guys. Let's go to Malachi three verse 10. You all know the scripture? Well, some of you do. Let's go to Malachi three verse 10. Grab your Bibles. Grab your Bibles. I just love my new Bible. Because this print is big. I can actually see. Malachi three verse 10. Alright.
Money in scripture is missional before it is What? What? Money in scripture is missional before it is personal. You know, Jesus cemented in Matthew six verse 33. We all know that scripture. But seek you first the kingdom. And everything else, it will be added. We sang it this morning. Seek first the kingdom. Why? Because provision follows priority.
So so notice God doesn't say you cannot have both. He's saying you cannot serve both. You see that? You cannot have you can have both, you cannot serve both. And so money is not just a currency. Money is a rival master. It's a great servant, but a terrible master. And I've heard many people say, if I can only earn this amount, I'll be fine. And then guess what? They get you that amount and then it's like, if I can only if I can only earn 10,000 more.
Contentment is not laziness. Don't you understand what I'm saying? Contentment is not laziness. It's freedom from comparison. I don't have to earn how much you're earning. I don't have to spend how much you're spending. Right? I don't have to buy the car that my neighbors got. I don't need to do that. I don't have to be the Joneses. I'm the duplex. We're way cooler. We share cars. Come on, Lord. It's so good. You see, you can increase financially without being enslaved emotionally. Seriously, guys. Because that's the thing about finances. And finance is is is great. Like I said, it's a great it's a great servant, but it's a terrible master.
Financial increase without spiritual discipline accelerates drifting. Come again? You can watch it online. Financial increase without spiritual discipline accelerates accelerates drift. If my heart is ruled by a kingdom, it will show. And there is very generous people. Can I tell you guys? And I'm not it's not just about finances. It's about your heart. Right? Generous with your time, your talents, and your treasure. So church, we're not contending for more money. Brandon, we're not contending for more money.
But what you do need to do is that be the hands and feet of Jesus in places and spaces and in communities that need it. There are people out there that is that are not eating, that doesn't have a roof over their home. And so when God gives us more, it's not for me to consume, but it's for me to apply. Because his promise is provision, not luxury. And so I wanna challenge you guys. I wanna challenge you guys. Where has the Lord showed you in your heart? Who needs help? How can we make a difference? Because when God increases you, it's not for you. He wants to use you.
Paul was not sitting on a tropical island sipping a pina galada. He's in prison, and he's saying, hey, my God will take care of all your needs. My God. Because he knows that God is a God that takes care of his needs. Right? He knows it. And this guy's situation is not great, But he understands it doesn't matter where he's at. God's heart is still for him because God promises us provision.
Generosity predates the law. Generosity predates the law. Abraham was tithing even before Moses existed. Even before Moses existed, Abraham was applying biblical principles, tithing, generosity. You understand why Abraham was a rich and blessed man? Because of his heart. And so remember, the law implemented was by Moses under God. Right? And the last time I checked, Abraham was long there before Moses was. Then Paul writes in two Corinthians nine verse seven, he says, this is New Testament. You must each decide in your heart how much to give and don't give reluctantly or in a response to pressure.
If God is first guys, get this. If God is first, provision is added. But if provision is first, God is replaced.
But the problem is people think that when they are not blessed, when they are not flowing in the land of milk and honey, that they're missing God somewhere. And if they don't have the riches in the bank, then maybe God they're not God's favorite. That is not the case. Because God's prominence is for provision, not for prosperity as the world sees it. Somebody says amen.
And can I tell you, when that stuff was taken away from me, man, it made me upset? But then the question came, why is it making me upset? Because can I tell you guys that I'm being honorable honorable? I'm being vulnerable, which is honorable, that my bike was my idol. I loved my bike, man. It was like my second wife. So God knew what he was doing.
And so last year, our word was strength over stature, and this word for the year is contending. And so we've been looking at contending into different areas of our lives. And so I have the absolute privilege of preaching into contending for your finances. Yay. Or contending for financial freedom. Right? Who wants more money? Show me the money. You know that thing. Some people are I just want some money.
