Remember the Time You Fell in Love with Jesus

Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 11 call the church to “remember the time.” The bread and the cup are not just a church routine, but a holy reminder that Jesus gave His body and shed His blood for sinners. Holy communion brings the church back to the night Jesus was betrayed, when He still broke bread with a devil at the table and loved people who would soon deny, betray, and abandon Him.

The call to remembrance reaches farther back than the upper room. The Passover points to the Lamb, the blood over the doorpost, and the death angel passing by those covered by God’s provision. Moses and the children of Israel show that God can make a way when Pharaoh is behind, the Red Sea is in front, and there looks like no way out. Abraham and Isaac show that God provides a ram in the bush when obedience brings a person to the end of what they can figure out.

The whole Bible becomes an H-I-M book, because every one of the sixty-six books points back to Him. Adam and Eve received covering when sin exposed their nakedness. John the Baptist called Jesus “the Lamb of God” who takes away the sin of the world. The woman with the issue of blood found that one touch from Jesus could dry up what had isolated and polluted her life. The centurion found that Jesus did not even need to come to the house, because just one word could heal.

Jesus also meets guilty people without throwing stones. The woman caught in adultery found that the One who had every right to condemn her told her, “Neither do I condemn you,” and then called her to go and sin no more. Grace does not hold people in the last place where they messed up, but grace does call them out of sin into a changed life.

Jesus remembered His purpose in Gethsemane, the place of pressing. Christ asked for another way, yet submitted Himself to the Father’s will. Christ carried the cross, endured the beating, the nails, and the shame, and never said a mumbling word. Christ rose on the third day, proving that His love did not end at Calvary.

Communion therefore calls for solemn reverence, heartfelt gratitude, and honest self-examination. The body and blood of Jesus proclaim His death until He comes, and they remind every believer that God still says, “You are loved.”
