The shallow end feels safe because feet can touch, life feels manageable, and all a person has to do when things get hard is stand up. The deep end feels different. The deep end has no footing, no control, and no easy way to keep everything comfortable. Yet Jesus eventually leads every real follower to places where feet cannot touch.
Mark shows Jesus plainly telling the disciples that the Son of Man must suffer, be rejected, be killed, and rise again. Jesus does not describe a plan that might go sideways. Jesus says it must happen. The cross is not an accident, and it is not a failure of Messiahship. It is exactly why He came.
Peter gets Jesus' identity right when he calls Him the Christ, but Peter gets Jesus' mission wrong when he rebukes the suffering Messiah. Peter wants victory, power, and authority without the suffering that comes first. Jesus exposes that thinking as a temptation away from the Father's will. A person can know the right title for Jesus and still try to keep Him inside a preset version that feels safe.
Jesus then turns from His cross to the cross His followers must carry. Deep faith changes how a person lives because discipleship cannot stay boxed into Sunday or one safe area of life. Jesus contrasts indulging self with denying self, saving life with losing it, gaining the world with saving the soul, and hiding faith with confessing Christ when it costs something.
The call to deny self does not mean getting everything desired with a little Jesus attached. The call means surrendering what is wanted so that Christ's will can take its place. Open hands cannot keep tightly grasping personal plans, comfort, reputation, and control. A surrendered life finds real life precisely because it is placed in the hands of Jesus.
The world can call someone a winner while that person loses what matters most. Money, influence, possessions, vacations, success, and packed schedules cannot be carried into eternity. Jesus is not impressed by a life that gains everything and forfeits the soul. Knowing Christ is the thing that ultimately matters.
The things keeping people in the shallow end are real and serious, whether fear, doubt, sin, shame, or plain refusal to obey. Yet the blood of Jesus does not merely hide sin. The blood of Jesus purifies from all sin. Christ sees not the word written in shame, but the righteousness inherited through His finished work on the cross.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Jesus leads disciples beyond control. Jesus eventually takes His followers where their feet cannot touch. Deep water exposes the limits of self-reliance and forces a person to trust the One who called them there. Safe, manageable faith may feel secure, but it cannot produce the same knowledge of God. [05:48]
- 2. Christ's cross was always necessary. Jesus says that His suffering, rejection, death, and resurrection must happen. Peter wanted a Messiah of immediate victory, but God’s victory comes through the cross. The Messiah’s suffering is not a detour from the plan. It is the plan. [12:33]
- 3. Right identity can miss the mission. Peter confesses Jesus as the Christ while resisting what Christ came to do. A person can use all the right words about Jesus while rejecting the parts of His will that feel costly or confusing. Deep faith lets Jesus define both His identity and His mission. [15:58]
- 4. Surrender cannot coexist with control. Jesus calls disciples to deny themselves and lose their lives for His sake and the gospel. Open hands are the posture of surrender, while clenched hands keep trying to control the future. Real life is found when personal plans are placed in Christ’s hands. [22:42]
- 5. Christ purifies what keeps people shallow. Fear, sin, shame, and hidden struggles can keep a person standing at the edge of faith. Walking in the light does not minimize those realities, but brings them under the cleansing blood of Christ. Jesus does not merely cover the problem. He purifies His people from all sin. [39:45]
