Leviticus 23:33-44 “And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 'Speak to the people of Israel, saying, On the fifteenth day of this seventh month and for seven days is the Feast of Booths to the LORD. On the first day shall be a holy convocation; you shall not do any ordinary work. For seven days you shall present food offerings to the LORD. On the eighth day you shall hold a holy convocation and present a food offering to the LORD. It is a solemn assembly; you shall not do any ordinary work. These are the appointed feasts of the LORD, which you shall proclaim as times of holy convocation, for presenting to the LORD food offerings, burnt offerings and grain offerings, sacrifices and drink offerings, each on its proper day, besides the LORD's Sabbaths and besides your gifts and besides all your vow offerings and besides all your freewill offerings, which you give to the LORD. On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the produce of the land, you shall celebrate the feast of the LORD seven days. On the first day shall be a solemn rest, and on the eighth day shall be a solemn rest. And you shall take on the first day the fruit of splendid trees, branches of palm trees and boughs of leafy trees and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days. You shall celebrate it as a feast to the LORD for seven days in the year. It is a statute forever throughout your generations; you shall celebrate it in the seventh month. You shall dwell in booths for seven days. All native Israelites shall dwell in booths, that your generations may know that I made the people of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.”
[26:39]John 7:1-14 “After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. Now the Jews' Feast of Booths was at hand. So his brothers said to him, 'Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.' For not even his brothers believed in him. Jesus said to them, 'My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.' After saying this, he remained in Galilee. But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching.”
[54:39]Nehemiah 8:13-18 “On the second day the heads of fathers' houses of all the people, with the priests and the Levites, came together to Ezra the scribe in order to study the words of the Law. And they found it written in the Law that the LORD had commanded by Moses that the people of Israel should dwell in booths during the feast of the seventh month, and that they should proclaim it and publish it in all their towns and in Jerusalem, 'Go out to the hills and bring branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make booths, as it is written.' So the people went out and brought them and made booths for themselves, each on his roof, and in their courts and in the courts of the house of God, and in the square at the Water Gate and in the square at the Gate of Ephraim. And all the assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and lived in the booths, for from the days of Jeshua the son of Nun to that day the people of Israel had not done so. And there was very great rejoicing. And day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read from the Book of the Law of God. They kept the feast seven days, and on the eighth day there was a solemn assembly, according to the rule.”
[48:13]Observation questions
- In Leviticus 23, what details identify the Feast of Tabernacles as an appointed time of the Lord, including its length and the special gatherings at its beginning and end? [28:40]
- What were the Israelites commanded to do with branches and booths, and what reason does Leviticus give for dwelling in booths?
- In Nehemiah 8, what did the returned people do after they found the instructions about the Feast written in the Law, and what place did the reading of God’s Word have during the seven days? [53:49]
- In John 7, what pressures did Jesus face from His brothers and from those who wanted to kill Him, and how did He finally go up to the Feast? [57:45]
Interpretation questions
- Leviticus calls these days the Lord’s feasts and holy convocations. What does that language show about whether worship should be shaped mainly by human preference or by God’s instruction? [27:03]
- The booths reminded Israel that God brought them out of Egypt and carried them through temporary places before bringing them into the promised land. Why is remembering past deliverance important for a people who are now living in greater stability?
- Jesus did not allow unbelieving family members, public attention, or danger to control His timing. What does His response show about the difference between faithful obedience and acting to please or impress people? [59:32]
- Nehemiah’s generation responded to God’s Word by gathering, obeying, rejoicing, and continuing in Scripture day by day. What does this pattern suggest about the connection between understanding God’s Word and putting it into practice?
Application questions
- What “temporary places” has God brought you through—such as a hard season, fear, sickness, lack, or uncertainty? How could you make a habit of remembering God’s faithfulness instead of only remembering the struggle? [45:55]
- Rejoicing before the Lord was part of the command, not just an extra activity. What helps you rejoice sincerely in God when life is not easy, and what tends to steal your thanksgiving? [42:21]
- God’s blessing includes more than money; it includes healing, protection, strength, deliverance, and provision. Where have you been limiting your expectation of what God can do, and what specific need do you want to bring before Him in faith? [35:15]
- “More does not mean spend more.” When increase comes into your life, whether through income, a gift, extra time, or opportunity, what would it look like to ask God, “What do You want me to do next?” [51:18]
- Is there a financial decision, purchase, debt, or savings goal where you need greater wisdom and self-control? What practical step could help you handle God’s provision with thanksgiving and care? [52:25]
- Jesus did not let even close family voices move Him outside the Father’s timing. Are there voices, expectations, or pressures that make it hard for you to follow God’s direction? How can you slow down and seek the Lord’s guidance before responding? [58:07]
- The Holy Ghost gives believers help, guidance, and authority rather than leaving them helpless under repeated sin or fear. Is there an area where you have felt pushed around by the enemy? What would it look like this week to seek God through prayer, Scripture, fasting, and obedience? [01:03:09]
