Psalm 139 sets the ground beneath the sanctity of life: God knows, surrounds, forms, judges, and leads. David stands amazed that the all-knowing God does not merely know everything in a distant way, but knows him. God sees beneath the smile, behind the Sunday clothes, and underneath every answer of “I’m fine.” Secret sin is never secret to God, but hidden faithfulness is never hidden from God either. The child whom others may see as an inconvenience is known by God.
David’s question, “Where shall I go from your Spirit?” drives home that nobody can outrun God. Heaven, Sheol, the farthest sea, darkness, grief, diagnosis, financial pressure, and broken homes cannot put anybody beyond His presence. God’s presence comforts the believer because Christ has promised to be with His people. God’s presence warns the unbeliever because every life will stand before the God from whom no creature is hidden.
David then points straight to the womb. The womb is not a waiting room for personhood. It is the workshop of God. God forms inward parts, knits together, weaves, and fashions each child according to His purpose. Every pregnancy is an act of God, and every child in every womb is a person formed by God, not a product to discard. Scripture speaks of mothers and children, not disposable tissue.
The image of God gives human life a worth that does not rise or fall with being wanted, planned, healthy, productive, or convenient. No disability diminishes a person’s dignity. No difficult diagnosis cancels God’s purposes. A child does not become valuable when somebody decides to place value on that child. That child is valuable because God made that child.
The warning against abortion rests finally on theology, not politics. God is the Creator, Preserver, and Protector of life, and murder cannot be made righteous by law, convenience, or public opinion. Yet God’s judgment does not cancel His mercy. Abortion is not the unforgivable sin. At the cross, God’s holiness judges sin, God’s love saves sinners, and God’s grace gives life.
David’s closing prayer, “Search me, O God,” calls for humble repentance and courageous obedience. Christ, the everlasting way, summons His people to pray, speak truthfully and compassionately, serve mothers with real help, and give the gospel to mothers, fathers, and children alike.

Key Takeaways
- 1. God knows the unseen child [57:51] God’s knowledge reaches further than human sight, public opinion, or a mother’s circumstances. The child in the womb is not hidden from the Creator, even when that child is unseen and unnamed by the world. God’s knowledge gives every vulnerable life weight and dignity before anyone else recognizes it. [57:51]
- 2. The womb is God’s workshop [01:03:18] David’s language is personal and deliberate: God forms, knits, and weaves. The womb is not an empty space awaiting value, but the place where God is actively at work. Every human life begins under the careful hand of the Maker. [63:18]
- 3. Worth does not depend on convenience [01:08:11] Human worth does not come from being planned, healthy, productive, or wanted. The image of God gives dignity that no diagnosis, hardship, or disability can take away. Convenience is a poor measure for the value of a life God has made. [68:11]
- 4. God judges sin and forgives sinners [01:14:30] God’s holiness refuses to soften sin, including the taking of innocent life. God’s grace also refuses to leave broken sinners without hope. The cross tells the truth about judgment while opening the door of forgiveness through Jesus Christ. [74:30]
- 5. Christ calls His people to courageous mercy [01:15:51] Christian conviction cannot stop at being against abortion. Christ calls His people to stand beside mothers with prayer, meals, diapers, rides, counsel, friendship, and the gospel. Truth without compassion becomes cold, while compassion without truth cannot heal the deepest wound.
