Bible ReadingPsalm 56 “Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me; all day long an attacker oppresses me; my enemies trample on me all day long, for many attack me proudly. When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me? All day long they injure my cause; all their thoughts are against me for evil. They stir up strife, they lurk; they watch my steps, as they have waited for my life. For their crime will they escape? In wrath cast down the peoples, O God! You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book? Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call. This I know, that God is for me. In God, whose word I praise, in the Lord, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me? I must perform my vows to you, O God; I will render thank offerings to you. For you have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.”
[03:56]Matthew 6:25-34 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
[24:49]Romans 5:8 “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
[11:02]Isaiah 26:3-4 “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.”
Mark 4:35-41 “On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, 'Let us go across to the other side.' And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, 'Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?' And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, 'Peace! Be still!' And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, 'Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?' And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, 'Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?'”
[27:37]Observation questions- In Psalm 56, what words or images show how serious David’s situation really was, and what repeated words show where he turned in that fear? [03:18]
- In Psalm 56:8-9, what does David say God keeps, records, or knows about him?
- In Matthew 6:25-34, what examples from creation does Jesus use to address anxiety, and what do those examples reveal about the Father?
- In Mark 4:35-41, what do the disciples say to Jesus in the storm, and what two questions does Jesus ask them after the storm is calmed? [27:37]
Interpretation questions- Psalm 56 says, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” What does that wording suggest about the difference between feeling fear and being ruled by fear? [05:52]
- David says, “This I know, that God is for me,” before his circumstances change. What does that reveal about how a believer can have peace even while the pressure is still present? [17:17]
- Romans 5:8 says God showed his love while people were still sinners. Why does the cross give a deeper answer to fear than simply hoping circumstances will improve? [10:10]
- Jesus asks the disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” How does that question push the discussion beyond the storm itself and toward the object of trust? [28:16]
Application questions- Fear often preaches in the language of “what if.” What “what if” has been loudest in this season of life, and how has it been shaping thoughts, mood, or decisions? [00:38]
- God does not ask his people to pretend fear is fake. When fear shows up, what does it usually look like personally—spiraling thoughts, sleeplessness, irritability, withdrawal, control, or something else? [06:44]
- People often run somewhere for relief—escapism, control, comfort, or something similar. Where is the heart most tempted to run when anxiety rises, and why does that place feel so appealing in the moment? [11:31]
- God records wanderings and bottles tears. Is it easy or hard to believe that God is this attentive and near in pain? What makes that hard to believe at times? [07:43]
- God’s presence can become greater than the problem, even when the problem is still there. When has there been a moment where the situation did not immediately improve, but there was still a real sense of God’s help? [17:17]
- Jesus says not to worry about tomorrow, and worry often reveals dependency. When worry appears, how could it become a cue to turn toward God in a more concrete way this week—through prayer, Scripture, confession, or asking for help? [24:49]
- God’s promises are trustworthy because God signed them, and the empty tomb proves he keeps his word. Which promise of God needs to be held onto most tightly right now, and what would it look like to trust that promise in one practical step this week? [29:46]
