Never Too Far: The Father's Welcome Home

Jesus places disciples at his feet, not just to hear old stories, but to listen as people who are being shaped and sent. Luke 15 gives the setting that matters. Sinners and tax collectors gather near Jesus, and the Pharisees grumble because Jesus welcomes sinners and eats with them. Jesus answers that grumbling with three stories, and the last one opens wide the heart of God.

The kingdom of God is full of sinners. Heaven is not filled with people who were worthy enough, wise enough, or clean enough to get there. Heaven is filled with people who were dirty and lost, but have now been found and cleaned. The lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son all say the same thing. All of heaven rejoices when even one sinner comes home.

The younger son goes as far away from the father as he can. The son is far geographically in a distant country, far legally because he has squandered his inheritance, and far spiritually because he is feeding unclean animals in a foreign land. The pigs eat better than he does. The son is as good as dead. Yet Jesus gives the good news in one line: “while he was still a long way off.” The father sees him because the father has been looking for him. The father does not stand with crossed arms, waiting to lecture him. The father runs.

The father also does the cleaning. The son comes home dirty, sweaty, dusty, and smelling like the pigpen. The father does not tell him to take a bath first. The father embraces him, kisses him, covers him with the best robe, puts a ring on his finger, and puts sandals on his feet. The son does not restore himself. The father restores him freely.

The older son brings the warning. The older son stands in the father’s house, wearing the father’s provision, and still grumbles about the father’s mercy. The father’s love is not a zero sum game. The younger son’s welcome does not mean the older son is pushed out. Both sons are invited to the party. The danger is that a person can live in the father’s house long enough to forget who built it.

The parable speaks to the far off, the returning, and the near but hardened. The Father stands ready with a warm embrace. If the kingdom of God is full of sinners, then there is a place for sinners who turn home.
