59s
“``So the son rehearses his speech. Have you ever done that? I gotta go to dad for something. I gotta go to mom for something. Aunt grandparent, I gotta rehearse what I'm gonna say. I had to rehearse it and see if I say it this way, will it happen? If I say it that way, he rehearses what he's going to say and comes up with, father, I've sinned against heaven and you. I'm no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants. He knew he blew it. But what he doesn't yet understand is that grace was waiting for him before he even finished his speech. Siblings in Christ, hear this today. You may think that you've gone too far, but you can never outrun the grace of God.”
64s
“And he reminds them of two things, older son, you've never been outside of my love, and your brother's restoration is not a threat to your belonging. This is the word for the church today. Someone else receiving grace does not take away from those who have been on the path all along, and the church ought to be a place where prodigals can come home. A place where the broken can come, those who are not crying, really quite doing it the way we think they should, they should be welcomed home. A place where people can say, I was lost, now I'm found. Because there is no place like home.”
50s
“We know the rest of the story. Father's so excited. Bring him a robe. Bring him a ring. Bring him shoes on to put on his speed and kill the fatted calf. The robe was a symbol of him being covered. The ring, family heirloom says he belonged to family. Sandals said he was no longer a servant, and the feast was a symbol of the fact that he wasn't just tolerated, he was celebrated.”
49s
“The younger son remembers home, and he says, how many of my father's hired servants have food to spare? I'm sitting here starving to death. I know what I'll do. I will go back to my father. is what we call repentance. repentance is not just about feeling bad. It's not about having regrets. It's more than saying I made a mistake, and all that's important. It's getting up though, turning around, and making the choice to go home.”
