Jesus in Luke 6 goes straight after the heart that loves to spot everybody else’s flaws. Criticism is not a spiritual gift, even though some people act like it is. The text says the problem is not that people lack opinions. The problem is that people often have opinions without self-awareness.

Jesus does not forbid all judgment. Jesus forbids hypocritical judgment. “Judge not” does not mean discernment disappears. The log must come out first, then the speck can be seen clearly. Hypocrisy is not noticing the speck. Hypocrisy is ignoring the two by four sticking out of the eye.

The log belongs at the feet of Jesus. The Christian life cannot be spent defending the log while attacking someone else’s speck. Once the log is laid down, the heaviness lifts, and the obsession with everybody else’s tiny speck loses its power.

What Jesus is saying the point he's trying to get to this morning is, yes, we live in a crazy world with a lot of problems, but you got a lot that you gotta fix too. And so this morning, during the altar time, I'm just gonna lay the log at the altar. And I'm gonna do that as a symbol because some of you need to come lay your logs at the altar. Some of you have spent so much time trying to defend the log that is in your own eye that you've worried about the little speck, little tiny speck that's in somebody else's eye. And I truly believe this morning that God wants you to lay it all down to him.”
