Jesus redefined family as those who do the will of his Father, elevating spiritual kinship above even his own biological relationships. In a crowded house, with his own mother and brothers waiting outside, Jesus pointed to his disciples and declared, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” This radical statement invites everyone, regardless of their earthly family situation, into a new, deeper family—one bound together by faith and obedience to God. No matter your background or the state of your earthly family, you are welcomed into God’s family through following Jesus. [34:42]
Matthew 12:46-50 (NIV)
While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
Reflection: Is there a relationship or expectation from your earthly family that sometimes pulls you away from following Jesus? How might you prioritize your spiritual family this week in a tangible way?
Jesus made it clear that the way to become part of God’s family is not through heritage, effort, or religious ritual, but through himself—he is the way, the truth, and the life. Many people search for God in different ways, but Jesus offers the assurance that anyone who comes to the Father must come through him. This is not meant to be exclusive, but to be incredibly good news: the door is open to all who will trust and follow him. No matter your past or your questions, Jesus invites you to come to the Father through him and find your place in God’s family. [37:50]
John 14:6 (NIV)
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you are tempted to try to “earn” your place with God, rather than simply trusting Jesus as the way? How can you surrender that striving to him today?
God’s love is so great that he decided in advance to adopt us into his family through Jesus, not because he had to, but because he wanted to and it gave him great pleasure. Like a child adopted into a new family, we are given full rights, privileges, and a new identity—not because of our background, but because of God’s kindness and grace. This adoption is not a formality; it is a passionate, joyful act of God’s heart, and it is permanent. No matter your story, God wants you in his family, and he delights in calling you his own. [40:48]
Ephesians 1:5 (NIV)
He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.
Reflection: When you think about being adopted by God, what emotions or thoughts come up? How can you embrace your identity as God’s beloved child this week?
What unites the family of God is not biology, background, or even agreement on every issue, but the blood of Christ. Through Jesus’ sacrifice, we are forgiven, set free, and made brothers and sisters—regardless of our differences or disagreements. This unity is deeper than any earthly bond and calls us to love, support, and prioritize one another as true family. Even when it’s hard, even when we don’t always get along, we are called to be there for each other, because we are united by something far greater than ourselves. [46:41]
Ephesians 1:7 (NIV)
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.
Reflection: Who in your spiritual family do you find it hardest to connect with or love? What is one step you can take this week to reach out or show grace to them, remembering you are united by Christ’s sacrifice?
Following Jesus means that obedience to our heavenly Father and commitment to his family sometimes must take precedence over even our closest earthly relationships. This doesn’t mean disrespecting or abandoning our biological families, but it does mean that when there is a conflict, our loyalty to God’s kingdom family comes first. Jesus modeled this for us, and he calls us to love, serve, and prioritize our spiritual brothers and sisters, even when it’s uncomfortable or countercultural. As we approach times with our earthly families, let’s also remember to invest in and cherish our spiritual family, because it matters deeply to Jesus. [49:28]
Matthew 6:33 (NIV)
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Reflection: As you look ahead to the coming week, what is one way you can intentionally invest in your spiritual family—perhaps through encouragement, service, or prayer—so that God’s kingdom remains your top priority?
Family is one of the most powerful forces in our lives—sometimes a source of deep joy, sometimes a place of pain or confusion. God designed family, and from the very beginning, He has always existed in community: Father, Son, and Spirit. This divine family is the blueprint for our own relationships, but as we know from Genesis onward, sin and brokenness have fractured what God intended to be “very good.” Our earthly families, with all their beauty and mess, point us toward a deeper reality: the family of God.
When Jesus walked the earth, He experienced the full spectrum of family dynamics. Even His own mother and brothers misunderstood Him, at times opposing His mission. Yet, in a moment of tension, Jesus redefined what it means to be family—not by biology, but by obedience to the will of the Father. He pointed to His followers and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister.” In this, Jesus elevated the spiritual family above even the closest earthly ties, not to diminish the value of our biological families, but to show us the greater reality of the kingdom family.
This kingdom family is not exclusive or based on our background, achievements, or even our earthly family. It is open to all who trust in Jesus, who follow the Son. Through Him, we are adopted into God’s family, given full rights and privileges as sons and daughters. This adoption is not a reluctant obligation on God’s part, but a source of great pleasure and joy for Him. Just as an adopted child receives a new name and a permanent place in a family, so we are given a new identity and a secure belonging in God’s household.
The tie that binds us is not our blood, but the blood of Christ. This means that, as followers of Jesus, we are brothers and sisters—sometimes disagreeing, sometimes struggling, but always united by something deeper than preference or personality. Our commitment to the family of God should take priority, even when it creates tension with our earthly families. Jesus modeled this for us, calling us to love and invest in our spiritual family, to be present for one another, and to let our identity as children of God shape every other relationship in our lives.
Matthew 12:46-50 (NIV) — > While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”
> He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”
> Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
Ephesians 1:4-5 (NIV) — > For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.
Jesus is elevating the kingdom family. The family of God. The priority of his heavenly father. Jesus, above all else, was about building the kingdom of God. And nothing was going to distract him from that. Nothing was going to become a bigger priority than obedience to his heavenly father. And that's always been the mission. You become part of the kingdom family, the family of God by doing the will of the father or more literally and simply, we follow the son. That's what it means to be a Christian or a follower of Jesus. We follow the son. And by following the son, we become members of this kingdom family, this spiritual family. Now, we hear that today. And sometimes some people hear it and it lands and they're like, how could it be so exclusive and so narrow minded? And, you know, that's really thinking high of yourself. And when Jesus said this, he wasn't trying to necessarily. Be incredibly exclusive. It was meant to land as incredibly good news. Think about it this way. Everybody to this day who isn't sure what they believe, but feels in the core of their being that there is a God. There's a creator. The apostle Paul tells us in Romans one, like, how can you deny creation and the glory of God? We're just kind of on a soul level, all drawn to God all around the world. And what Jesus is getting at here is everybody. Everybody who's just drawn and trying to figure it out on their own. They're getting some of it right. Everybody. And they're all getting a lot of it wrong. But they're all trying to figure out this soul pool of there is a God. And what does it mean to be in relationship with him? And how do I do that? So Jesus comes along and he's like, you're all trying it and you're getting a little right. You're getting a lot wrong. And here's some incredibly good news. I'm the way. What you're looking for. I'm the way. And I'm the truth. And I'm the life. You're not going to get to the father unless it's through me. But the best news in the world is, is if you follow me, you'll get to the father. ``God decided in advance. I love this to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do. And it gave him great pleasure. It wasn't a have to. It was a want to. And it gave him great pleasure. It gave him great pleasure. [00:40:50] (25 seconds) #BloodOfChristBinds
That's the love of God. When you read this, God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family. He knows your history. He knows everything you've done. And he doesn't care. The prodigal son says the father is at the end of the driveway waiting. He doesn't care what might happen around the corner. All he wants is for you to come home and he can bring us to himself through Jesus. This is what he wanted to do. And it gave him great pleasure. [00:44:56] (33 seconds) #ObedienceOverEarthlyTies
And as followers of Jesus, just like Jesus, if we're going to follow in his way, what that means is obedience to our heavenly father and to his family, it matters. And it should take priority over everything else. [00:48:26] (18 seconds)
Jesus made a way for you to be God's son and daughter, fought for you. He reconciled and restored the relationship for you. And he welcomed you into his family as an honored son, daughter, son of the king, daughter of the king. Amen. [00:50:28] (21 seconds)
