Feelings make a terrible engine. The facts of who God is and what He has done do not change, whether goosebumps show up or not. Faith gets in line with those facts, and feelings become the caboose instead of guiding the train. God remains present and faithful even when His people do not feel Him in the same way.
The family of God is moving back toward unity because of Jesus, but that movement happens among people who are still being sanctified. Paul’s picture in Ephesians 4 calls the body to grow up into Christ, no longer tossed around like infants, but joined together and built up in love. Sanctification means everybody is playing the same game while standing at different ages, skill levels, and places of maturity. Grace has to abound because everybody has fallen short.
Conflict exposes that process. James says fights and quarrels come from desires battling within, and selfishness often sits closer to the center of a feud than anybody wants to admit. Conflict calls for a pause, prayer, and self-examination before a response. God may allow a hard situation to bring insecurity, old history, jealousy, or other “me stuff” to the surface so that He can deal with it in love.
Jesus gives Matthew 18 for actual sin, not every hurt feeling, disagreement, or strong opinion. Jesus begins at the lowest level: go to the person privately, with restoration as the goal. Sin is a cancer, not something to placate or call good, but correction seeks to bring a person back into right standing with God and the family. Escalation only comes when repentance is refused, and even then the hope remains restoration.
Paul’s instruction in Romans 14 handles the many conflicts that are not sin but disputable matters. Unity does not mean uniformity. In essentials, unity; in nonessentials, liberty; in all things, charity. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up, and strong believers bear with weaker believers rather than using their freedoms, convictions, or opinions to become stumbling blocks. The Holy Spirit changes hearts, not somebody’s need to prove that they are right. Love, humility, peace, and mutual edification must remain the heart motivation.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Let facts lead, not feelings [58:17] The facts of God’s character do not rise and fall with a person’s emotional state. Faith chooses to stand on what God has said when feelings are loud, absent, or all over the place. Feelings can be a gift, but they are a caboose, not the engine. God’s presence is not negated by a hard morning. [58:17]
- 2. Conflict often starts with self-examination [01:18:49] James locates quarrels in desires that battle within the human heart. A pause, prayer, and honest look inward can uncover insecurity, envy, old wounds, or plain selfishness. God brings those things to the surface not to shame His children, but to heal what keeps relationships strained. High conflict everywhere may reveal a problem closer to home. [78:49]
- 3. Correction aims at restoration, not humiliation [01:28:44] Jesus begins with a private conversation because dignity matters and restoration is the goal. Sin must not be minimized, because sin spreads like cancer when it is left alone. Yet biblical confrontation is never an excuse to beat somebody up or display superiority. Love seeks a brother or sister restored to God and family. [88:44]
- 4. Unity does not require uniformity [01:42:39] Paul makes room for real differences among people who worship the same Lord. Opinions and disputable matters do not deserve the same treatment as clear sin. Strong convictions become destructive when they are used to judge, show off knowledge, or make another believer stumble. The body becomes more beautiful when different people remain joined in peace. [102:39]
- 5. The Holy Spirit changes hearts [01:43:03] Human beings cannot replace the Holy Spirit in another person’s life, no matter how right their argument may be. Prayer, fasting, patience, and a life that bears good fruit create room for God to work. Love refuses the temptation to control somebody else’s conscience. Humility values another person’s good above the need to win.
