Paul warns the Roman church to watch out for and avoid those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine they have been taught. Sound doctrine matters because nobody simply “follows Jesus” apart from theology. Every person has answers, stated or unstated, about God, life, death, truth, and how life ought to be lived. The question is never whether someone has a theology, but whether that theology is biblically faithful.
False teaching divides Christ’s church and puts rocks in the road and pits in the path for people trying to follow Christ. Paul’s warning does not turn every difference of conviction into a dividing line. Romans 14 shows that Christians can differ on secondary matters while receiving one another in love. False doctrine, however, makes errors into requirements, excuses sin, or overturns what God has plainly revealed.
Legalism adds to God’s commands or makes obedience the basis for salvation. God’s moral law still reflects his character and calls his people to love God and neighbor, but dietary laws and Israel’s civil laws do not function as binding requirements for Christians today. Legalism also appears whenever man-made rules, political positions, or current events become tests of faithfulness that God himself has not made.
Licentiousness falls into the other ditch. Grace does not give permission to disregard God’s moral law, celebrate sexual immorality, excuse gossip, or call clear disobedience “legalism.” Christ saves his people by grace alone, yet that same grace calls them into a holy life. Legalism puts giant rocks where God did not put them; license leaves dangerous ditches where God has spoken clearly.
Major doctrinal error often comes dressed up as secret knowledge. Gnostic impulses promise hidden codes, special techniques, conspiracy-driven insight, or a new key that supposedly proves the church has misunderstood Scripture for centuries. God has not left his people needing an enlightened guru. Christ is Lord over angels and demons, Scripture is sufficient, and the church must avoid confident teachers who serve their own appetites through smooth talk and flattery.
Paul rejoices because the Romans are known for obedience, goodness, and knowledge. Their calling is to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil. Satan uses falsehood to divide and derail, but the God of peace will crush Satan under the feet of Christ’s people. The cross has already secured Satan’s defeat, and Christ’s final victory will include his people. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ gives God’s favor, steadfast love, kindness, and peace. Those who have Christ need no added rule, hidden insight, or anxious fear.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Everybody is already a theologian Every person builds life on answers to ultimate questions, even when those answers remain unspoken or confused. “I don’t know” can itself become a settled theology when it claims nobody can know. Christian discernment begins by bringing those underlying beliefs into the light of God’s Word. [05:49]
- 2. False doctrine blocks the narrow path False teaching does not merely produce intellectual mistakes. It creates divisions in Christ’s church and places obstacles before people trying to walk faithfully with him. The church must distinguish secondary disagreements from errors that corrupt the gospel or undermine obedience. [08:21]
- 3. Legalism and license are opposite ditches Legalism adds requirements God has not given or turns obedience into a means of salvation. Licentiousness dismisses God’s moral commands under the banner of grace. Christ calls his people neither to invented burdens nor to freedom from holiness, but to thankful obedience rooted in grace. [20:30]
- 4. Secret knowledge feeds spiritual pride Teachers who claim access to hidden codes or long-lost insight often flatter people into thinking they are too smart to be misled. Scripture gives no warrant for controlling angels, decoding secret messages, or rejecting the church’s faithful reading of the Bible. Christ has given his people what they need in his Word. [26:06]
- 5. Grace gives confidence for discernment The God of peace will crush Satan, even though Satan still works through division and deception. Christ’s victory at the cross means that vigilance need not become anxious nervousness. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ is God’s favor, steadfast love, and smiling face upon his people.
