#TrustTheGuide
“Now don't get me wrong. I I still like spreadsheets. I still like making plans. It's fun. It's comfortable. But the point is faith is not about knowing where the path leads to or the path ahead necessarily. It's about having trust in the one who has given you the lamp to light the way. When you are walking around in the dark and you can't see anything and all you've got is a lamp, church, you stay close to the person who's given it to you. Thank you.”

#GoThenIWill
“It's a two part instruction. Notice how god asked Moses to step out in faith first saying, now go, following it with power saying, will. God could have put it the other way around, but he didn't. He could have said, I will, then go, but he didn't. He's a good father. And if his power came before our obedience, then he wouldn't develop our faith. We have to step out and watch God move on our behalf. It is now go, I will.”

#LampNotMap
“``A lamp simply gives you enough light to see what is immediately in front of you for the next step. And this is how God actually wants to lead us, and it's intentional that it's put this way in the bible. See, I believe that for many of us, we would rather that verse have said, your word is a map. A map that shows all the crossroads, a map that shows you where the dead ends are so you can avoid it, a map that says here and here, you're gonna fail. Don't go that way. A map that tells you when the truth will be revealed and everything makes sense, and a map that shows you the final destination so you can plan out which route to take. Right?”

#GraceForToday
“You know, church, sometimes I feel like we ask for grace from God for next year's battle when we are still living in today. Who else has prayed for provision for a need that we don't even have yet? Ask God for an answer to a question we haven't even asked yet or been asked. But God gives grace the same way he gives light, one step at a time. Jesus says in Matthew six, don't worry about tomorrow for today has enough trouble of its own. And that's so true. We can't think about tomorrow's battle because God hasn't given us the details of it, but for sure, he has given us direction for today. That's what the lamp represents. Not enough light for the whole journey, just enough to keep walking.”

#FaithOverCertainty
“But that's not what it says there. You know, throughout scripture, it actually is almost never how God works. For those of you who've been around church for a while, might know these stories. Think about Abraham. God doesn't reveal much. He tells him to leave everything that is familiar and go. Or with Moses, he doesn't explain or reveal the miracles before telling him to go back to Egypt. Again and again, God gives enough direction for obedience, but not enough information for certainty. Now going back to the lamp, that's how this applies. God is showing us the things that are in front of us, but not all of them.”

#FaithfulnessFirst
“So now that we understand this, that God lights the way and that it's intentional, does anybody else wonder why? I do. I can't help but wonder why. It begs the question, doesn't it? Again and again, you know, I wonder, why do you not reveal these things? Give me some more detail. Here's what I know now though. Here's what I've learned. God is actually building our trust. God is growing our faithfulness first because faithfulness must come before clarity.”

#TrustTheNextStep
“So here's what I want you to take away today. Maybe right now you came here waiting for clarity, waiting for certainty. You prayed for a map, and now you're finding out God's given you a lamp. Maybe for some of you, you walked in today because God gave you a lamp, and that next step in faith was to show up to church today. I've been there. I've been there. Can I be bold today with you church and say that I believe this is exactly where you need to be? God put you here for a reason and he's asking you to trust him with this one next step.”

#LampNotFloodlight
“I can't help but ask, why do I desire more clarity when it says right there that he's lighting the path for me already? For years, I've read that verse and I've never actually slowed down to notice something about it. We understand that he lights our path from that verse, but the detail isn't how he lights it. It specifically says a lamp. What it doesn't say is a stadium light. What it doesn't say is those, motion detecting LEDs in your backyard where you take one step and the how the whole path gets lit up, and you see the door and you can just walk straight to it. That's not what it says. It says a lamp. Does that not almost seem limiting? How much light does a lamp actually give you? Not much. Enough to see a little bit of what's in front of you, maybe a little bit of what's around you? Certainly not the whole path.”
