Bible Reading
Daniel 3:8-18 “Therefore at that time certain Chaldeans came forward and maliciously accused the Jews. They declared to King Nebuchadnezzar, “O king, live forever! You, O king, have made a decree, that every man who hears the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image. And whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast into a burning fiery furnace. There are certain Jews whom you have appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These men, O king, pay no attention to you; they do not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.” Then Nebuchadnezzar in furious rage commanded that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be brought. So they brought these men before the king. Nebuchadnezzar answered and said to them, “Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the golden image that I have set up? Now if you are ready when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, to fall down and worship the image that I have made, well and good. But if you do not worship, you shall immediately be cast into a burning fiery furnace. And who is the god who will deliver you out of my hands?” Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”
[17:29]Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
[33:59]John 15:4-5 “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
[34:07]Observation questions
- What accusation is brought against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and what command have they refused to obey? [18:31]
- How do the three men respond when Nebuchadnezzar threatens them with the fiery furnace? What do they say about both God’s ability to rescue and their decision not to worship the image? [19:26]
- What details in Daniel 3 show that the pressure to bow was public, widespread, and costly? [27:56]
- In Galatians 5:22–23 and John 15:4–5, how are faithfulness and fruit connected to the Holy Spirit and abiding in Christ? [33:53]
Interpretation questions
- Why is the issue in Daniel 3 more than simply refusing to bow to a statue? What does the conflict reveal about where allegiance belongs? [21:18]
- The three men trust that God is able to deliver them, yet they remain obedient even if He does not deliver them in the way they hope. What does this show about faith that is not controlled by outcomes? [20:46]
- Why can pressure reveal a person’s allegiance rather than create it? How might temptation, fear of rejection, or the desire for approval expose what a believer most trusts? [29:32]
- If faithfulness is fruit produced by abiding in Christ, why is trying harder on its own not enough to change repeated patterns of compromise? [34:29]
Application questions
- Where does following Christ feel most negotiable right now: around certain friends, in a relationship, online, at work or school, or when no one else is watching? What makes that situation difficult? [29:53]
- Is there a place where the desire to be liked, avoid conflict, or not look strange has made it harder to obey God? What might it look like to stand with humility and clarity in that situation? [31:02]
- Think about a recent moment of pressure or temptation. What did that moment reveal about what was capturing your heart—Christ, comfort, acceptance, pleasure, control, or something else? [29:48]
- For anyone who recognizes compromise or failure in their life, what would it look like to respond by returning to Christ instead of hiding, self-condemnation, or making empty promises to do better? [33:27]
- What is one practical way to abide in Christ this week through prayer, Scripture, worship, or gathered church life? How could the group encourage one another in that step? [34:16]
- Faithfulness is visible in how a person lives, not only in what they say. What small, concrete choice this week could make allegiance to Christ more visible in everyday life? [31:21]
