"But I'm going to spend this morning actually in one event in the life of Daniel encapsulated in one chapter of the book of Daniel and it's a great story. One that perhaps even those that have left us to go through the back doors there will know about and we love stories. You know practicing the way actually as we've been talking about in midweek church stories impact us. They form us. I could give you lots of information but let's be honest information doesn't stick. We know that from the church notices don't we? Information doesn't stick. You might say I'll be doing this Gareth. Oh yeah I told you two weeks ago. No no it doesn't stick. And I understand that." [00:00:51]

"So here you've got a bit of a structure, a bit of a leadership structure. You've got 120 satraps, you've got a probably a sort of MP, sort of leader of a council, pretty high up, pretty big deal to be one of those 120. But then there are three high officials and that is a really big deal. And Daniel is one of those three high officials and obviously at the top of the pyramid you've got the king, King Darius. And then what happens in verse 3, if we move to verse 3, we have a bit of a restructure, okay? You have those maybe at work sometimes, a bit of a leadership restructuring. They don't always go down well and this one didn't either." [00:06:04]

"This Daniel became distinguished above all the other high officials and satraps because an excellent spirit was in him and the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. So basically Daniel is so good that the king basically invents a new position for him and implements a new system. So there are 120 satraps, three high officials, then Daniel and then the king. Daniel and Daniel, you can t tell me as a man who is this one by himself. Sorry. So Daniel, because of his character, because of an excellent spirit within him, he gets favour. Favour falls upon Daniel." [00:06:49]

"And I find, I'm sure Daniel finds this as he will find this as well, but with favour usually comes two things in my experience. I've had favour in my life in different areas of work and church and stuff. With favour comes greater responsibility and also with favour often comes jealousy. And in this restructure, there is jealousy. So in verse four, we have this, then the high officials and the satraps sought to find a ground for complaint against Daniel with regard to the kingdom, but they could find no ground for complaint or any fault because he was faithful and no error or fault was found in him." [00:07:16]

"This is a man with favour. Daniel, full of integrity, doesn't do any of those shady deals, doesn't take any of those bribes. He is a righteous politician. That's a miracle right there, to be perfectly honest. And I pray for more miracles of that nature across the world today. He is a righteous politician. He becomes powerful, the most powerful politician, only second to the king, but still they find no complaint. And I find that quite amazing because with power, that doesn't normally happen. In fact, there's a quote up on the screen." [00:08:20]

"So this is why Daniel, in some ways, this is a miracle because he has got this power, he's got this favour, but he is ready to serve with integrity and truth. And there's no complaint found against him. You know, I've seen people here in leadership who are first in and last out. They are serving. They are not thinking of power. They're thinking, what can I do today to serve others and to serve God? They are true leaders. In fact, if someone was here, has an incredible gift of preaching or prophecy or healing or whatever it might be, but they're not prepared to serve, then I actually believe those leaders are quite dangerous and really need to stay away from platforms." [00:09:42]

"But in Daniel, we have a leader who has favour and authority and power, but there is no ground for complaint. So I think that's the first thing to note about this hero of faith. No ground for complaint, despite the fact that such temptation with power. but despite the fact there's no ground for complaint, the jealousy does not go away, and a different strategy emerges. So here's the strategy in verse 5. Then these men said, we shall not find any ground for complaint against this Daniel unless we find it in connection with the law of his God." [00:10:24]

"So Daniel has favour one moment, but the next moment, all that favour has disappeared. And I think in our world, sometimes we look around and go, Lord, we pray for favour for these different places. And I have to be honest, my heart, when I was preparing this, went straight out to Syria. You think about Syria, many of us have probably prayed for the end of Assad's regime, but what's come in its place is horrific for many Christians of many tribes. You might want to get rid of Putin, you may be praying to get rid of Putin, but who knows what might come next." [00:16:10]

"And the point I think here is, when you're in exile, when you, and we are in exile, as Christians, we are in exile, the rulers of the earth are not on our side. We are citizens of heaven. We are exiles here on earth. Our home is in heaven. And just like Daniel's day, it can be hostile out there. And we need to realise that the UK is not our home. Persia was not Daniel's home. If we are in Christ, heaven is our home. And when it comes to being in exile, we know that opposition isn't just something we should expect, it's completely and utterly inevitable. Opposition is inevitable." [00:16:55]

"So Daniel's faced here with a month that celebrated a God that he could not worship. And he already knows that despite great favour, favour to be appointed, literally the sort of prime minister, you know, he's double. Despite the favour he knows, he knows that exile is a hostile place. And of course, if we get favour, we take it. We plan for it. We pray for it. But if we assume the world is our friend, then I believe we're going to be very disappointed. Because this hero of faith, Daniel, is about faithfulness when he's got the favour, but faithfulness also when there's hostility." [00:18:38]

"So there can be times of favour. I've worked for Christian charities and I've spoken to people in government. I've received funding. I've received favour because of the work we've been doing. But I know also there are times of accusation. I know also there are times of persecution. Thank you. There may be times of oppression. There'll be lies. But when the sun's shining down as we sing, when we're in the desert place, blessed be the name of the Lord. We remain faithful. And verse 10 is a brilliant example of faithfulness. Verse 10 of chapter 6, carry on. When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber, open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God as he had done previously." [00:19:43]

"Calmly following God in the storms, in the accusations, but also in the favour. Let's carry on this story because I'm only at verse 11 and I've probably got about 10 minutes. Verse 11, then these men came by agreement and found Daniel making petition and plea before his God. God. So the plotters are waiting. They know the decree of the king. So we go to verse 12. When they came near and said before the king, concerning the injunction, O king, did you not sign an injunction that anyone who makes petition to any God or man within 30 days, except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, the thing stands fast. You can see the light's gone on now. I've been scammed. The thing stands fast according to the law of the Medes and the Persians, which cannot be revoked." [00:21:52]
