Luke 19:11-2711 As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.
[27:51]12 He said therefore, “A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return.
13 Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’
[28:04]14 But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’
[28:12]15 When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business.

[28:29]17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.’

[28:44]19 And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’
20 Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief;
21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’
22 He said to him, ‘I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?
23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’
[29:17]24 And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’
[29:23]25 And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’
[29:30]26 ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
27 But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’”

23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’
24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed,
25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.’
[37:31]26 But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed?
27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest.
28 So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents.
29 For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
30 And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’”

- What mistaken expectation did the crowd have about the kingdom of God in Luke 19:11, and what did they expect Jesus to do when He arrived near Jerusalem? [34:52]
- What repeated word do the first two servants use when reporting the results of their work, and what does that word show about how they viewed the mina? [44:17]
- What reasons does the third servant give for wrapping the mina in a cloth, and what alternative does the king say he could have taken? [45:17]

Interpretation questions
- Why does Jesus tell this parable immediately after the crowd assumes that God’s kingdom will appear at once? How does the nobleman’s departure and return reshape their expectations about Jesus’ kingdom? [35:18]
- If every servant in Luke 19 receives the same mina, why is it helpful to understand the mina as the gospel rather than as personal abilities, money, or spiritual gifts? [50:12]

Application questions
- The gospel belongs to the King; it is not a private possession to be hidden or kept only for personal comfort. Who is one person in your life who needs to hear the good news clearly, and what could be a natural next step toward that conversation? [51:18]
- Fear can sound responsible: “I might say the wrong thing,” “They may reject me,” or “I could lose a relationship.” Which fears or excuses most often keep you quiet about Jesus, and what would trusting Christ in that area look like this week? [56:04]
- It is possible to serve faithfully in church activities while rarely speaking the gospel out loud. In what ways are you already serving well, and how could those places of service become opportunities to point people directly to Christ? [56:36]
- Salvation is not the finish line but the beginning of a life of serving Christ. Where might you be tempted to receive God’s grace like the Dead Sea receives water—without letting that grace flow outward to others? [55:20]
- The faithful servants acted out of loyalty to their master, not because they knew what reward they would receive. What changes when obedience to Jesus is driven by love for Him rather than by a desire for recognition, comfort, or results? [53:25]
- Jesus will return as King, and people who reject His rule are not outside His authority. How should that truth shape the way you pray for, care for, and speak with friends or family members who do not follow Jesus? [01:02:20]
- Jesus has entrusted every disciple with the work of making disciples despite different gifts, resources, and levels of experience. What specific opportunity could you pray for this week, and how will you be ready to take it when it comes? [01:04:18]
