True Christian hospitality breaks cultural barriers and reflects Jesus’ love.
In a culture where people often hesitate to accept help for fear of being a burden, the simple act of offering hospitality—whether it’s a cup of water, a listening ear, or a meal—can be a powerful testimony. Jesus modeled radical hospitality, welcoming all and meeting needs without hesitation or expectation of repayment. When believers extend kindness and generosity, especially in places where such gestures are rare or countercultural, it not only meets practical needs but also points people to the heart of Christ. This kind of hospitality can challenge and gently transform cultural norms, showing that in God’s kingdom, no one is a burden and everyone is valued. [26:03]
Matthew 10:42 (ESV)
"And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward."
Reflection: Who is someone in your community you could invite for coffee or a meal this week, even if it feels a bit uncomfortable or countercultural? How might this simple act reflect Jesus’ love?
God’s leading is trustworthy, even when the future is unclear.
There are seasons when the path ahead is uncertain—whether it’s about where to live, what work to do, or how long to stay in a place. In these moments, it’s easy to feel anxious or unsettled. Yet, God invites His people to trust Him with each step, believing that He is working all things out for good. Even when plans are delayed or circumstances change unexpectedly, God’s faithfulness remains. Trusting Him means praying for guidance, being open to His direction, and resting in the assurance that He will provide what is needed at the right time. [37:16]
Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you feel uncertain about the future? How can you intentionally surrender this to God in prayer today?
Sharing life with others helps combat isolation and brings encouragement.
Loneliness can be a real struggle, especially in a new culture or when separated from family and friends. Building community—whether through church, small groups, or shared interests—provides a space to share experiences, support one another, and remind each other that no one is alone. Even informal gatherings, like meeting for coffee or joining a creative cohort, can become lifelines of encouragement and belonging. God often uses these relationships to strengthen faith and renew hope, making the journey lighter and more joyful. [30:20]
Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV)
"And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."
Reflection: Who in your life might be feeling isolated or lonely? What is one practical way you can reach out to them this week to offer encouragement or companionship?
Using your unique talents strengthens the church and blesses others.
Every believer has been given gifts and talents that can be used to serve others and build up the body of Christ. Whether it’s leading youth, helping with media, or creating spaces for conversation, each role is valuable. Serving not only meets practical needs but also helps others discover and develop their own gifts. When everyone contributes, the church becomes healthier, more vibrant, and better equipped to reach out to the wider community. [12:30]
1 Peter 4:10 (ESV)
"As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace."
Reflection: What is one gift or skill you have that you could use to serve your church or community in a new way this month?
Respecting local customs can be a powerful witness, but living out the gospel may also mean gently challenging norms.
Living as a follower of Jesus in a different culture involves both honoring local customs and being willing to stand out when necessary. Simple acts like queuing, bowing, or following local etiquette show respect and build trust. At the same time, the gospel sometimes calls believers to act differently—offering help, initiating conversations, or showing hospitality in ways that may not be typical. By balancing respect for culture with faithfulness to Christ, believers can be a positive influence and point others to the hope found in Jesus. [27:28]
Romans 12:18 (ESV)
"If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all."
Reflection: In what ways can you honor the culture or community you are part of, while also living out your faith in a way that points others to Jesus?
Life and ministry in Japan have brought both blessings and challenges. The heat has been intense, but we’re grateful for the small mercies—like air conditioning and the creative ways people here adapt, such as the battery-powered fan jackets. Our weekly rhythm includes days of rest, but even those are often filled with the practicalities of life and ministry. Homesickness is real, especially when we long to celebrate with family or receive messages from loved ones back home. Yet, in the midst of these moments, we’re reminded of the privilege it is to serve here and the importance of community, both local and global.
Our involvement in ministry has taken on many forms. Youth ministry has been a joy, even as we navigate the unique dynamics of an international church with young people from diverse backgrounds. The group is small but vibrant, and we’re eager to see it grow, especially among Japanese youth who tend to be more reserved. Beyond church walls, God has opened doors through a Christian café, where music and conversation create space for both believers and seekers. Opportunities like DJing Christian music for non-Christians have sparked meaningful dialogue and built bridges in unexpected ways.
Cultural differences are ever-present. In Japan, the desire not to be a burden shapes relationships deeply, sometimes leading to isolation and loneliness. This is a stark contrast to the radical hospitality and openness modeled by Jesus. We’re learning that simple acts of kindness—offering a cup of water, listening, or inviting someone in—can challenge cultural norms and reflect Christ’s love in powerful ways. As foreigners, we’re also mindful of our witness, striving to honor local customs while gently introducing a different way of being community.
Language remains a significant hurdle. While we’ve made progress, we long for greater fluency to engage in deeper conversations and minister more effectively. The journey can be draining, but the desire to connect and serve propels us forward. We’re also grateful for the fellowship of other missionaries and creative workers, whose shared experiences help combat loneliness and encourage us in our calling.
Looking ahead, we face uncertainties with our visa renewal and future direction. We trust God’s leading and ask for prayer as we seek to remain faithful to the people and the work He’s entrusted to us. Through it all, we’re reminded that God’s presence is constant, guiding us step by step.
Matthew 10:42 (ESV) — > "And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward."
2. Acts 3:6 (ESV)
> "But Peter said, 'I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!'"
3. Psalm 139:9-10 (ESV)
> "If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me."
Getting involved with just discipleship and teaching people in terms of—it's not quite stage or, you know, speaking ministry, and I'm sure we're going to be getting there—but just in the media team, so helping them develop their gifts, helping them understand what part media plays in ministry, all that kind of stuff, I think that's been a really, really big fun thing for me to do.
