True obedience is not a heavy duty or a way to earn a place in God’s family. Instead, it is a natural growth that flows out of a heart transformed by grace. You already belong to Him because of the price Jesus paid, and your desire to follow His commands is a privilege born of love. When you realize how much you have been given, following Him becomes an organic response rather than a forced behavior. It is about who you are in Him, not just what you do. [52:53]
The one who keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us. (1 John 3:24)
Reflection: When you consider your daily habits of obedience, do they feel more like a heavy obligation or a natural response to God’s kindness toward you?
The Holy Spirit is given to every believer as a comforter and a guide to lead us into all truth. While God may speak through prayer or the wisdom of others, His Spirit will always lead you back to the authority of His Word. A life that truly wants to follow God is one that remains sensitive to the Spirit’s leadership rather than following personal feelings or opinions. By grounding yourself in the scriptures, you allow the Spirit to help you differentiate between truth and deception. This guidance ensures that your path remains aligned with God's character and will. [01:00:05]
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God. (1 John 4:1-2)
Reflection: In what specific area of your life are you currently seeking clarity, and how might you create space this week to listen for the Holy Spirit’s guidance through the Word?
In a world where many voices compete for your attention, it is essential to develop a heart that can recognize what is false. Just as someone learns to spot counterfeit money by studying the genuine article, you are called to immerse yourself in the truth of Christ. The enemy is active and often uses slight variances in truth to lead people astray or tickle their ears with what they want to hear. By pouring yourself into the Word, you become equipped to recognize when a message does not align with God’s heart. This discernment protects your soul and keeps your focus on the narrow path of righteousness. [01:02:02]
Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? (Matthew 7:15-16)
Reflection: When you encounter new ideas or popular opinions, what is your primary standard for deciding if they are true, and how can you more intentionally use Scripture as that filter?
What you believe about Jesus Christ is the foundation of your entire spiritual life. To confess that He has come in the flesh is to acknowledge both His humanity and His divinity, recognizing that He truly lived, died, and resurrected. This theology is not just academic; it is the very heart of the gospel that brings salvation and transformation. When you hold fast to the truth of the incarnation, you are acknowledging that God is continually abiding with you. Standing boldly on this truth allows you to navigate spiritual warfare with confidence and clarity. [01:10:19]
By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. (1 John 4:2-3)
Reflection: How does the reality that Jesus physically lived and resurrected change the way you view your own daily struggles and physical needs?
There is no need to live in fear of the spiritual challenges or the darkness present in the world today. You are from God, and because of His presence within you, you have already conquered the influences that seek to pull you away. The Spirit of Christ dwelling in you is far greater and more powerful than any force found in this world. Jesus has already defeated the enemy through His sacrifice and resurrection, giving you all the authority and strength you need to remain faithful. You can walk in victory today, knowing that the battle has already been won by your Savior. [01:13:08]
Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. (1 John 4:4)
Reflection: What is one fear or pressure from the world that has been weighing on you lately, and how does the truth that "He who is in you is greater" change your perspective on it?
First John provides a frontline theology for ordinary Christian living: truth, love, obedience, and discernment are inseparable. Drawing from the close of chapter three and the opening of chapter four, the preacher frames the struggle in light of Gnosticism’s ancient denial of Christ’s real flesh and resurrection, then applies that conflict to contemporary life. The call is not primarily to moral striving but to organic obedience that flows from union with Christ — a heart transformed so that righteous behavior becomes natural, not merely dutiful. Obedience, then, is evidence of remaining in him; it issues from gratitude for grace rather than a ledger of good deeds.
The Holy Spirit is highlighted as the indispensable guide who makes Scripture intelligible, leads prayerful living, and confirms communal accountability. Yet the Spirit never contradicts the Word; biblical truth is the touchstone against which impressions, feelings, and purported new revelations must be measured. Because false teachers always arise, discernment is not optional: believers are urged to test spirits, learn the fruit of truth, and be rooted enough in Scripture to spot subtle corruption rather than chasing novelty that merely tickles the ear.
Public confession of the incarnation is presented as a theological litmus test: to deny that Christ came in the flesh is to unravel his divinity, atonement, and victory. That victory, however, is already secured — “greater is he who is in you” — and therefore the Christian posture is confident, missional, and steady in spiritual warfare. Practical application follows: parents must steep children in Scripture and prayer; congregations must foster small groups for depth and accountability; and every believer ought to prepare to answer why faith is certain, not sentimental.
Finally, the call is pastoral and urgent: remain in Christ through Scripture and community, practice biblical discernment, and engage the world with truth tempered by love. The summons includes concrete steps — baptism, life groups, inviting friends — rooted in the conviction that guarding doctrine and cultivating devotion are twin disciplines that preserve the next generation and advance the gospel.
I wrote this as I was studying through this, and I just give this to you. It says, the spiritual battle never ends. There will always be false voices seeking to divide and to deceive God's people. And if given opportunity by way of a heart that is not grounded in truth, listen to this, Satan will seek to multiply, to nullify his call in us to abide, love, obey, serve, and multiply the gospel. I'm telling you right now, if we don't let God set up residence in our life, if we're not abiding in him, if we're not training our children to do the same, we're setting our self up for deception and failure.

To some people, it'd be a bigoted to say that Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven. How can you say that? And we're because that's what he said. That's what the world that's what the Bible teaches. We need to stand upon that truth. It may sound to be sound like it's kinder and nicer for us to soften that, but guys ultimately, sin brings about death. What we're trying to do is rescue people from death, eternal separation from God. That is reality. So what we need to do is step in the middle of this, love people, care for them, but we need to know the truth to be the truth, to speak the truth. We need to pour this into our lives. This is who we're supposed to be. That's what John's saying.

And see, and it the phrase in here he says, do not believe every spirit but test the spirits to determine if they are from God. You test the spirits based on truth. The same way agents now I did some study on this and y'all have heard this before, but I just wanna make sure it's exactly right. But the way that agents learn how to recognize counterfeit money is not by studying counterfeit money, but you know this, what do they do? They study the truth so much that when the counterfeit money comes in front of them, they can recognize it because they know what's missing. Because that's how we are supposed to live our life.

When he says false prophets have gone out into the world, it's written in a perfect tense. It literally means this, there's always gonna be false prophets going out in the world. It's always gonna be around. It's always been there. It always will be. Until Jesus comes, there will always be false prophets saying, I've got something new. Let me let me read this. Why don't you check this out? No. Why don't you go back here to the word? Know this so well that when they are speaking, you know, oh, they're trying to tickle my ears. As a side note, the church must never compromise biblical truth. As parents, it is our responsibility to make sure that we do not send our children into the world unable to recognize truth.

if we look at the first part of verse four, first first of it, it says, and this is number three, the devil is always active. He says, dear friends, that is beloved, do not believe every spirit but test the spirits to determine if they are from God because many false prophets have gone out into the world. I love that when he says, dear friends or beloved, it's a tender address from a pastor's heart. It is a loving and gentle. John is not just addressing the people as an accommodation may do his class. He is empathetic, he is compassionate, he is caring. Reminds me of Paul in first Thessalonians verse eight when he says, I gave you not only the gospel, I gave you my life. And he goes on, he says, because you were dear to us, because we cared for you. As a mother would nursing her own child, Paul's given this great picture of how much he loved them. That's what it is. The devil is always active though.

finally, we need to embrace spiritual wisdom. We need to embrace spiritual wisdom. This is what he says in the passage. He says, from this, we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of deception. We know the spirit of truth and the spirit of deception. He says, again, the spirit of truth would never contradict the word. We need to know the spirit of truth. How do we know that? We know about preparing our hearts, by pouring the word into our lives. We know the spirit of truth by letting the holy spirit set up rain in our life and help us discern what truth is. We know the spirit of truth.

Because guys, there's a lot of things in life that that that it's not gauged on feelings, is it? It's not. Come on. How many of y'all been married more than ten years? Then you know feelings are interesting, aren't they? How many times have I'm not gonna ask you to raise your hand, but how many of y'all have ever woken up in the morning and you're mad at your spouse and you don't really feel very strong in that moment. You know what I'm talking about? Just say amen or old me. Okay? Which one? Is it true? Yes or no? So can your feelings lie to you? Yes. Yes. Does that mean you don't love your spouse? It just means no. I'm maybe just ticked off right now where I'm in a bad mood. I'm just not acting like a human being should. I'm not acting very mature. Come on. How many of you, when you were dating in high school, you were in love, And you were in love every other week to somebody else. Right? You weren't in love. Not really. See, feelings can lie.

The bible even tells us, you know, that we will be a reflection of those people we put around us. A lot of people say, I don't need to go to church. Yes, we do. Why? Because we need the accountability to be with other people, other believers. We need the accountability. In fact, I would hope that all of us this year would set forth as a goal for every one of us to be a part of a life group this year. Why? Because we need to be in a smaller group of people who we can learn because, guys, it's proven that we learn better when we're in a smaller group of people. It's truth.
