Caleb’s story reminds us that when we stand on the promises of God, we can maintain a positive outlook even when everyone around us is filled with doubt or fear. The majority may say it can’t be done, but faith in God’s faithfulness gives us the courage to see possibilities where others see obstacles. Caleb’s “another spirit” was a different attitude—one that trusted God’s word over popular opinion, and that spirit set him apart for blessing. When you choose to trust God’s promises, you may find yourself going against the grain, but you will also find yourself in the center of God’s will. [54:09]
Numbers 14:23-24 (ESV)
“None of those who have despised me shall see it. But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it.”
Reflection: Where in your life are you facing a situation where the majority opinion is negative or fearful? What would it look like for you to stand on God’s promises in that area today, even if it means standing alone?
When the Israelites faced the Promised Land, most forgot how God had delivered them in the past—through the Red Sea, with manna from heaven, and victory over enemies. Forgetting God’s past faithfulness led to fear and discouragement. But Joshua and Caleb remembered, and that memory gave them courage to trust God for the next challenge. Looking back at God’s goodness in your own life can give you the strength to face new obstacles with faith instead of fear. [47:50]
Psalm 77:11-12 (ESV)
“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds.”
Reflection: Take a few minutes to write down three specific times God has come through for you in the past. How can remembering these moments help you face a current challenge with renewed faith?
Caleb’s willingness to stand for what was right, even when it was unpopular, shows the importance of choosing principle over popularity. The pressure to fit in or be accepted can tempt us to compromise our convictions, but true spiritual maturity means being willing to stand alone if necessary. Like the eagle that soars higher because it’s willing to go alone, God calls us to rise above the crowd and live by His standards, not the world’s. [56:11]
Galatians 1:10 (ESV)
“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
Reflection: Is there an area in your life where you’re tempted to compromise your values for the sake of acceptance or popularity? What is one step you can take today to choose God’s approval over people’s?
The Israelites wanted to choose a leader to take them back to Egypt, but Caleb refused to let others define his direction or success. He understood that who “makes” you determines who you serve and where you go. True success is not about climbing the world’s ladder, but about making sure your life is aligned with God’s purpose—even if it means turning down opportunities that would lead you away from Him. [01:00:46]
Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
Reflection: Are you pursuing any goals or relationships that might be leading you away from God’s best for you? How can you realign your ambitions today to make sure your “ladder” is leaning against the right building?
Caleb and the three Hebrew boys (Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego) demonstrated a faith that stood firm even when threatened with harm. Their “if not” faith trusted God’s ability to deliver, but remained steadfast even if He chose not to. This kind of faith worships God for who He is, not just for what He does, and refuses to bow to fear or compromise. [01:07:55]
Daniel 3:16-18 (ESV)
“Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, ‘O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.’”
Reflection: Is there a situation where you need to take a stand for God, even if the outcome is uncertain? What would it look like for you to have “if not” faith in that area today?
What a joy it is to gather together and celebrate all that God is doing in our midst. We give thanks for the many ways God has blessed our community this summer—from the impactful summer camp and Vacation Bible School, to the generosity shown through our back-to-school outreach, where we gave out over 700 book bags filled not just with supplies, but with love, grace, and encouragement for our young people. We honor those who serve, recognizing that every act of kindness and every hour volunteered is a reflection of Christ’s love in action.
As we look ahead to the Tri-City Revival and the return of our Bible study, we are reminded that our journey of faith is not meant to be walked alone. We welcome new members and invite everyone to deeper fellowship and discipleship, knowing that God calls us to grow together as a family.
Turning to the Word, we reflect on the story of Caleb in Numbers 14. Caleb stands out as a man with “another spirit”—a different attitude, a different mindset. While the majority of the spies saw only obstacles and defeat, Caleb remembered God’s faithfulness and stood on the promise that God would deliver what He had promised. Caleb’s spirit was not swayed by the crowd, popularity, or the lure of position. He was willing to stand alone, trusting God’s word over the opinions and fears of others.
This “other spirit” is not about being contrary for its own sake, but about being anchored in God’s promises, even when it means going against the grain. Caleb’s example challenges us to examine the company we keep, the voices we listen to, and the motivations behind our choices. Are we more concerned with being popular or being principled? Are we willing to compromise our convictions for the sake of acceptance or advancement? Caleb’s life reminds us that true leadership and blessing come from God, not from the approval of people.
We are called to have a faith that stands firm, even when it’s unpopular, even when it costs us something, even when it means facing threats or rejection. Like the three Hebrew boys who refused to bow to Nebuchadnezzar’s image, we declare that our God is able to deliver—but even if He does not, we will not bow. This is the “if not” faith that trusts God’s character above our circumstances.
Finally, the invitation is always open: to receive Christ, to be changed by His love, and to find your place in the family of God. No matter where you are on your journey, God’s grace is sufficient, and His promises are sure.
Numbers 14:23-24 (ESV) — > "None of those who despised me shall see it. But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it."
Daniel 3:16-18 (ESV) — > "Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, 'O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.'"
There's an axiom that says where you go determines who you meet. Who you meet determines how you think. How you think determines how you behave. And how you behave determines what you become. Let's back it up, you missed it, let me say that again: where you go determines who you meet, who you meet determines how you think, how you think determines how you behave, and how you—be careful about the company that we keep, who we surround ourselves with. Association brings about assimilation, or as Big Mama used to say, if you lie down with dogs, you're gonna get up with fleas. [00:44:57] (53 seconds) #WhereYouGoShapesYou
If you miss everything else I say today, don't miss this, and that is that when you stand on the promise of God you can have a positive outlook even when everyone else is doing otherwise. [00:54:09] (18 seconds) #PositiveSpiritOverPopularity
Be careful who makes you. Because whoever makes you, you are directed by, depended on, and devoted to. If people make you, people can take you down. But when God makes you, no demon in hell can take you down. You better make sure God makes you. All the glory ought to go to the Lord. Be careful who makes you. Be careful who makes you. Be careful who provides. Be careful who you take the opportunity from. Be careful who you are indebted to. [00:59:40] (44 seconds) #LadderLeaningRight
I just want you to make sure that as you're climbing the ladder of success, you don't look down one day and discover that the ladder is leaning against the wrong building. What you got to compromise to get that position. What you got to do as you're climbing the ladder of success. [01:00:46] (21 seconds) #StandWithAnotherSpirit
And then they said, not only is he able, he will deliver us. God that we serve is willing to do it. He's willing to deliver you. He's willing to heal you. He's willing to save you. He's willing to bring you out. But watch the determination. They said, but if not, know that we will not bow to the golden image. They said, our God can do it. And our God will do it. But if he don't do it, we still ain't going to bow. [01:06:17] (33 seconds) #GreaterIsHeInMe
If you don't believe me, anybody that the Lord has changed around here, any change, just look around the room. There's people around here that you can say, I'm not the same person I was. What a difference. What a difference the Lord has made. Hallelujah. Hallelujah to Jesus. Hallelujah. In my life. [01:10:08] (21 seconds)
