Paul’s charge in 2 Timothy 4:2-3 comes from a man near the end of his life, yet still burning for the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul knows that Timothy faces a church surrounded by competing philosophies, pagan practices, moral corruption, materialism, self-centeredness, and false doctrine. Paul’s warning is not mainly about wars, rumors of wars, or famine. Paul’s warning is about moral decline, spiritual complacency, spiritual apathy, and people turning away from sound doctrine.

The call to “preach the word” reaches beyond pastors, preachers, and teachers. The gospel belongs in every believer’s mouth, whether at home, at work, in the community, or in a simple conversation when God opens the door. The truth has no seasons. The truth remains the truth in winter, summer, spring, fall, good times, and bad times. The church must therefore be ready in season and out of season.

God calls the under-shepherd, even when a congregation votes him into position. Hebrews 13:17 reminds the church that leaders keep watch over souls as those who must give an account. The call to faithfulness does not require perfection, but it does require staying faithful to the call.

The image of itching ears exposes professing believers who want comfort, entertainment, and affirmation without repentance, holiness, or change. Itching ears seek confirmation rather than transformation. The gospel brings confrontation before it brings transformation. God’s Word cannot be watered down to soothe selective hearing, because God’s Word is meant to save souls unto eternity.

The digital age gives false teaching many new microphones through social media, podcasts, misinformation, vanity, envy, addiction, and self-centeredness. The church must also question a hunger for “lost books” while neglecting the books already found, the holy Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. The canon already gives God’s people the unadulterated and uncorrupted truth needed for faith and life.

The full gospel includes the words that comfort heavy hearts and the words that confront sinful lives. Christ’s cross, resurrection, provision, presence, and unfailing love bring real hope. Christ’s commands to repent, obey, pursue holiness, and prepare for judgment bring needed truth. Eternity has no end, and every soul will meet Christ face to face. Christ has already done the work of salvation, and He calls flawed people to come as they are, believe in Him, and receive Him.
