Bible ReadingGenesis 32:22-32 “During the night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. He took them and sent them across the stream, and everything else that he had. And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob's hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. Then he said, 'Let me go, for the day has broken.' But Jacob said, 'I will not let you go unless you bless me.' And he said to him, 'What is your name?' And he said, 'Jacob.' Then he said, 'Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.' Then Jacob asked him, 'Please tell me your name.' But he said, 'Why is it that you ask my name?' And there he blessed him. So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, 'For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.' The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip. Therefore to this day the people of Israel do not eat the sinew of the thigh that is on the hip socket, because he touched the socket of Jacob's hip on the sinew of the thigh.”
[35:10]Isaiah 41:8-10 “But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham, my friend; you whom I took from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest corners, saying to you, 'You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off'; fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
[17:08]Isaiah 42:1-9 “Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it: 'I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols. Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them.'”

[03:56]Observation questions- In Genesis 32, what had Jacob already sent away before he was left alone, and what happened to him in that lonely place? [33:49]
- In Isaiah 41:8-10, what does God call Israel and Jacob, and what specific promises does He give to people who feel afraid or dismayed?
- What details in Genesis 32 show the change in Jacob during the wrestling—especially after his hip was touched? [40:09]
- What were some of the “other wells” named that people often go to instead of going to God? [32:03]
Interpretation questions- Isaiah 41 says God chose Jacob and “has not cast you off.” What does that reveal about God’s heart toward people who have drifted, grown weary, or made a mess of things?
- Hebrews 11:6 says faith pleases God, and faithfulness is faith in action. What might be the difference between talking about faith and actually living as though God is Lord, Savior, and Redeemer? [03:43]
- Jacob’s turning point came when he was alone, emptied out, and unable to rely on his old ways. Why do barren or stripped-down seasons often become places where a person finally hears God clearly? [46:50]
- Jacob walked away with a limp after receiving a blessing and a new name. What might that suggest about how God uses weakness, wounds, and scars in a believer’s life? [59:44]
Application questions- Where has faith become more like words than action lately? In what part of life would it look like to actually live out trust in God this week? [05:23]
- Many people want a little bit of the world and a little bit of God. What is one “other well” that has been tempting lately—escape, pleasure, control, comfort, recognition, or something else? How has that well been running dry? [32:03]
- Jacob had to be left alone before he stopped running. What might it look like to make quiet space this week to stop avoiding God and honestly face what is going on in the heart? [47:43]
- The thing held most tightly is often the very thing that needs to be surrendered. What is hardest to loosen the grip on right now? Why does that area feel so hard to hand over to God? [36:32]
- Stop fighting and start clinging. In a real-life struggle right now, what would clinging to God look like instead of trying to control the outcome? [56:44]
- God is still present in weakness, surrender, and even in the wound. Is there a current pain, loss, or limitation that could become a place of deeper dependence on Him instead of only frustration? [54:10]
- God wastes no scars. What part of personal history still feels like a limp, and how might God use that very part of the story to bring Him glory and help someone else? [01:00:03]
