When we glance at our reflection but refuse to adjust what we see, we become like those who hear truth but never let it reshape their choices. James warns against treating God’s Word like a fleeting glimpse in polished metal—observing flaws but walking away unchanged. True faith lingers, letting the light expose what needs mending. It’s not about perfection but willingness to act on what the mirror reveals. How we respond to God’s reflection determines whether faith lives or lies dormant. [42:07]

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.” (James 1:22–24, ESV)

Day 2: Faith That Walks Up the Mountain

Abraham’s knife hovered over Isaac because faith isn’t theoretical—it climbs the hill, gathers the wood, and trusts the One who provided the promise. James reminds us that faith is completed through obedience, not just agreement. The test isn’t about earning favor but proving the authenticity of what we claim to believe. “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness… You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.” (James 2:23, ESV)

Day 3: The Oxymoron That Saves

“Faith works” sounds as contradictory as “jumbo shrimp”—until you realize dead faith talks while living faith builds, feeds, and kneels. James confronts hollow religion that blesses the hungry but keeps its bread. True faith isn’t a transaction; it’s a transfusion, circulating Christ’s love through hands and feet. The proof isn’t in eloquence but in the groceries bought, the tears wiped, the door held open. [37:34]

“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?” (James 2:14–16, ESV)

Day 4: The Scalpel and the Meat Cleaver

Not all faith is equal—some hack at life like blunt tools, while others perform precise surgery on the soul. James contrasts demons who shudder at truth with disciples who let truth reshape them. Saving faith isn’t mere acknowledgment of God; it’s surrender to His scalpel, cutting away what hinders love. The difference isn’t in the blade but in the hand that holds it. [56:00]

Day 5: The Fabric at the Window

Rahab’s scarlet cord wasn’t just a signal—it was the visible thread of a faith that risked everything. James highlights her not for moral perfection but for radical trust that reordered her priorities. True faith hangs its hope out the window, defying logic, reputation, and safety. It’s the rope ladder woven from repentance, daring to believe grace rewrites stories. [01:09:11]

“Was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?” (James 2:25, ESV)

Sermon Summary

James puts two words together that sound like an oxymoron: faith works. Paul and James are not fighting each other. They are singing the same song, just different parts. Paul says salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone, and James says that kind of faith does not stay alone. Faith can produce either deeds or death.

James starts with the Word as a mirror. The person who only hears the Word and walks away is like somebody who looks in the mirror, sees the mess, and does nothing about it. The gospel is not a concert, a play, or a good story that affects somebody for a moment and then gets left behind. The Word is meant to be looked into intently, like Peter pushing past the surface and going into the empty tomb. Faith looks deeper until God’s Word gets into the person.

Christ makes the law the perfect law that gives freedom. The law was not weak, people were weak. The law required perfection or payment, and Christ lived perfectly, died painfully, and rose triumphantly. Hearing that content is not the same thing as resting in it. Saving faith happens when the content of the gospel meets the conviction of the heart and becomes conversion.

James says a faith with no deeds is dead. A person can believe there is one God, but even the demons believe that, and at least they shudder. Faith is normal to human beings, like trusting a chair, a driver, or even Taco Bell. The question is not whether someone has faith, but what kind of faith it is and what that faith is resting in.

Abraham shows the difference between being credited righteous and being considered righteous. Genesis 15 shows Abraham believing God under the stars, and righteousness is credited to him. Genesis 22 shows Abraham taking Isaac up the mountain, ready to give the promise back to God, trusting that God could even raise the boy from the dead. The ram in the thicket is seen only by the kind of faith willing to walk the mountain.

Rahab shows the same thing from the other side. Right in the middle of her life and her sin, she hides the spies because she recognizes the people of God. Faith becomes tangible. As the body without the spirit is dead, faith without deeds is dead. Changed lives make the invisible visible, and communion becomes another faithful act that rests again in the broken body and shed blood of Christ.

Is it really screwed into the floor? Is this one of them wobbly chairs that I'm gonna fall off and embarrass myself? You sat in it. Why? Because you know enough about chairs. Do you know everything? No, I don't know everything about them. But you just comfortably sat down and some of you like this young lady up here in the front row and you, David's got his legs crossed. He's fully relying on that chair now. If that chair begins to go, he's going with it because he don't have his feet on the floor. Right? That's conviction. You just gotta rest in it. Just shush. “They're both birds. Like, the difference say this should go between a scalpel and a meat cleaver. Right? They both work on meat. It's not intended to chop people up. While they both work with meat and flesh and those things, they're distinctively different. So too is the type of faith that James is talking about. Okay?”

They were body, soul, and spirit to reflect the nature of God the father, father, son, and spirit. And God said to them, if you sin, you shall And did they die? Yes. Eventually? No. Immediately. They died spiritually. That one part of humanity that is capable of connecting with the father because he is spirit. His spirit was now dead and gone. And now they had to be ushered out of the center of the garden because God can no longer connect with them and walk with them in the cool of the day. That's what died in them.”

“But what James is capitalizing on is that there are multiple types of faith, not just one form of faith. Okay? And there is a faith that saves and a faith that doesn't. Okay? There's a faith that changes and a faith that doesn't. It's not only different kinds of faith, it's faith in different kinds of things. Okay? Because some people that are not followers of Christ, okay, are expressing similar faith to Christians. They have a conviction and and and they have a belief in it and they're fully reliant on it. The problem is their faith is in the wrong thing. Now, there's other people that maybe even for other religions, I don't know, but for Christianity, it's that their faith is inadequate, not the content or their conviction in it. And so when you listen to James today, this is such a multifaceted issue that really gets cleared up. This is an encouraging message. This is not complicated. This is not necessarily it should be more encouraging, more comforting, more motivating for followers than convicting, to be quite honest with you. If you're not saved, you're gonna be like, oh, I don't like this. And if you think you're saved and you're not, you're gonna hate it.”

“You know what I mean? It has no impact on you. You walk up to the mirror and you see your hair is a complete mess, you're like, alright, I'm good to go. No, you're not good to go. Your shoes aren't tied, your zipper isn't up. Right? Like, went, what are you doing, buddy? You know, it's like it like, why'd you look in the mirror? You're not gonna do anything about what you see. You just walk up and you're like, okay, that's good enough. No. It ain't good enough. You got, you know, bedroom hair and all those things. So what he's saying is, what was the whole point of looking in the mirror in the first place? Right. To see if change needs to be made. And it isn't that it's saying that change wasn't needed to be made. It says you forgot altogether what you saw. Like, you don't even remember your outfit. I I don't know if that mirror actually had any effect on your life. That's all he's saying. Right?”

“We've got to respond to this because faith without works is dead. To preach a message like this without a response is ridiculous. And so as we did last week, I have a question for you. I'll ask the question a couple times, then we're gonna be quiet for a minute or so, then we'll enter into communion. Today's question is, if we had to see your faith with deeds, what would we see? Reflect on your life. It doesn't have to be epic. I've been praying for my friends. That's a work. What evidence could you provide to another human being? Where first Peter says, always be prepared to everyone who asks to give an answer for the reason and the hope that lies within you. Do it with gentleness and respect. What would that answer be? Why do you have hope? What have been the deeds? How do you know you really expressed the the correct faith in the correct content? Think about the expressions of your life. Simple. Maybe you have a profound one. Beautiful. Beautiful. Let's contemplate that. And then we're gonna bring those forward as we come to communion. If we had to see your faith with deeds, what would we see?”

“To have it credited and then to be considered. Consideration was based upon his faithful response to that which had already been credited to him. And you talk about an extremely different ask. Take your son up the side of the mountain, I want you to tie him to the wood, I want you to sacrifice him, I want you to plunge a knife into his chest, and I want you to give that promise back to me. And Abraham did it. He walked with his servants with a tremendous amount of faith to to give back to God. The one thing, he was 99 when he was born, so he's well over 100 now. And God's like, okay, you need to give it back to me. And then walking with the servants, they'd finally reached a point where Abraham says, Isaac, you gotta pick up the wood and carry it on your back. Who do you think that's an image of? Christ himself. You carry the wood. And Abraham and Isaac, this is where it's so compelling. When they walk away from the servants, Abraham says, you stay here, me and the boy will be right back.”

“But if you're in Christ and you're in this room, you're already doing it. Okay? That's why this is a powerful, comforting message of encouragement. Okay? More than anything. But someone will say, you have faith, I have deeds. In other words, they're arguing that there's this division and a divisiveness between the two and there's not. There is no way to separate them. Okay? And again, I would hesitate to say they're they're both opposite sides of the same coin. That's not true because, you know, with a coin, you still have fifty fifty odds every time you flip it. You flip it a 500 times. 501 is still fifty fifty. You never reduce the odds. Okay? It's not like that at all. But the faith is very distinctive. Okay? Say like, the difference between, say, a hummingbird and a bald eagle, Both birds, no question about it, but are they remotely even close? Not at all.”

“I mean, what's the whole point of the good Samaritan? You got the Levite and the priest come down the hill, the so called religious guys, and they walk away from it for good religious reasons. But there's never a good reason to walk away from a person that needs help. And it's the least likely guy on the planet that like you talk about an oxymoron, good Samaritan.
