Bible ReadingJohn 4:43–5443 After the two days He went forth from there into Galilee.
[38:05] 44 For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.
[38:14] 45 So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.
[38:21] 46 Therefore He came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at Capernaum.
[38:33] 47 When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death.
[38:43] 48 So Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you simply will not believe.”
[38:54] 49 The royal official said to Him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
[38:54] 50 Jesus said to him, “Go; your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off.
[39:04] 51 As he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his son was living.
[39:14] 52 So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”
[39:19] 53 So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives”; and he himself believed and his whole household.
[39:33] 54 This is again a second sign that Jesus performed when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.
[39:36] Luke 4:24And He said, “Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown.”
[46:57] Matthew 13:20–21The one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away.
[01:01:44] James 2:19You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.
[01:03:15] Observation questions- What details show that the royal official was desperate when he came to Jesus, and what specific request did he keep making?
- What is different between what the official asked Jesus to do and what Jesus actually told him to do? [01:05:41]
- In John 4:50–53, what steps can be seen in the father’s faith—from hearing Jesus’ word, to traveling home, to learning the exact time his son was healed? [01:15:15]
- What reasons does John give for the Galileans “receiving” Jesus, and why might that reception still be incomplete or shallow? [59:03]
Interpretation questions- Jesus knew that a prophet is often not honored at home, yet He still went to Galilee. What does this reveal about continuing to love and bear witness to family members who are familiar with a believer’s past failures? [47:13]
- Matthew 13 describes people who receive the Word with joy but later fall away. What is the difference between an emotional beginning of faith and the kind of faith that keeps holding fast to Christ?
- The official wanted Jesus physically present in Capernaum, but Jesus gave him a word to trust instead. Why might Jesus sometimes answer the real need while not following the method a person had in mind? [01:07:52]
- James says that even demons have correct belief about God. What does it mean to have right doctrine but “zero surrender,” and how can that show up in an outwardly religious life? [01:03:35]
Application questions- Is there someone in your family who has a hard time taking your faith seriously because they know your history or have seen your weaknesses? What would patient prayer, humility, and a changed life look like in that relationship this week? [54:36]
- Have you ever tried to force spiritual conversations with family, perhaps correcting them more than loving them? What might it look like to stop being a “jerk for Jesus” and become a clearer witness through your words and conduct? [54:51]
- Are you trusting Jesus mainly because of something you hope He will do for you, or because of who He is and what He has said? What circumstance is exposing that difference in your heart right now? [01:09:35]
- The official believed Jesus’ word before he saw proof that his son was healed. What promise from Scripture do you need to obey or rest in even though you cannot yet see the outcome? [01:24:06]
- When you pray about a need, do you usually bring God both the need and a detailed plan for how He must solve it? How could you honestly ask for what you desire while releasing the method and timing to Him? [01:35:34]
- Think of a prayer God has answered in your life or family. Have you clearly connected that answer to Jesus when speaking with others, or could people easily explain it away as coincidence? How might you give Him credit this week? [01:28:14]
- Is there a burden you have stopped praying about because God has not answered as quickly as you hoped? What would it look like to keep seeking Him—not to pressure Him into your will, but to let Him grow your faith and make His will clear? [01:37:27]
