Faith for What I Cannot See

Hebrews 11 gives faith a definition that goes deeper than seeing proof with natural eyes. Faith is “the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen,” which means God sometimes calls His people to trust Him before the deposit hits, before the key reaches their hand, and before things look like they are getting better. Faith does not demand every detail of the plan. Faith trusts God with the next step.

The church’s own journey stands as a witness that God can do much with a little faith. God has carried Metropolitan through changing seasons, through loss, through COVID, and into a debt-free building that once looked beyond reach. God has made room not simply for present needs, but for those still coming: children, families, and people whose seats are vacant today. Faith sees room for what God has promised, even when the evidence is not yet visible.

Paul’s word that believers “walk by faith and not by sight” makes faith active. Faith is not standing still, waiting for a full map of the highway. The lamp unto the feet gives enough light for the next move. The fog may hide the distance ahead, but God supplies enough light to keep a person moving carefully, faithfully, and one step at a time. Faith does not require understanding the road. Faith requires trusting the One leading down the road.

Hebrews 11 also shows that faith moves before circumstances change. Abel offered, Noah built, Abraham went, Moses chose, and Israel crossed. Noah prepared for rain before anybody else saw a cloud. The automatic doors at the grocery store show the same truth: some doors do not look open until somebody starts walking toward them. Joshua’s priests stepped into the Jordan before the water stopped flowing. God sometimes says, “Step, and then I will move the water.”

Faith may look foolish to people who did not hear from God. Noah looked foolish until it rained, Moses until the sea opened, Joshua until the walls fell, and Peter until he walked on water. Criticism and opinions require discernment, because not every voice has been connected to the prayer that birthed the assignment.

Faith finally keeps spiritual receipts. David faced a giant he had never seen, but he remembered a God he had already experienced. Old testimony gives strength for new trouble. God’s provision, comfort, direction, sustaining grace, healing, and deliverance become receipts that answer fear: if God did it before, God can do it again.
