Faith: The Key to God's Promises and Relationship

Summary

Faith is the essential foundation for a life that pleases God. Without it, no amount of religious activity, good intentions, or even obedience to rules can bring us into true relationship with Him. Faith is not just one way to approach God—it is the only way. This is because God is pleased by a heart that trusts and believes in Him, not by mere outward actions or rituals. The Scriptures remind us that we walk by faith, not by sight, and that it is easy to get distracted by the world, by fear, or by the opinions of others. Yet, God has given us exceedingly great and precious promises, inviting us to be partakers of His divine nature, to live in freedom, and to experience His power and character in our lives.

However, these promises do not automatically come to pass. Just as a seed must be planted in the right environment to grow, so too must God’s promises be mixed with faith in our hearts. Faith is the active ingredient that brings the promises of God to life. Without it, the promises remain dormant, no matter how much we pray, hope, or even fast. We have a part to play: to receive the Word, to believe it, and to act on it. God has chosen to involve us in the process, giving us the ability and responsibility to respond in faith.

The parable of the sower illustrates that the condition of our hearts determines whether the Word of God will bear fruit in our lives. There are different types of soil—hard, shallow, distracted, and good—and each represents a different heart response. Even the most powerful anointing or the most profound teaching can be rendered ineffective if our hearts are not receptive. Culture, distractions, and unbelief can quench what God wants to do, but a heart that is ready and willing can receive and bear much fruit.

Ultimately, faith is not passive. It is a living, active trust that moves us to receive, to contend for, and to walk in the promises of God. It is the key that unlocks all the treasures of the kingdom, both for eternal life and for victorious living here and now.

Key Takeaways

- Faith Is the Only Way to Please God
God is not impressed by religious activity or outward compliance; He is moved by a heart that trusts Him. Faith is not just a helpful addition to our spiritual lives—it is the non-negotiable starting point for any meaningful relationship with God. Without faith, all attempts to approach or satisfy God are futile, for faith alone connects us to His heart and His purposes. [01:43]

- God’s Promises Require Our Participation
The promises of God are like seeds: powerful and full of potential, but dormant until they are mixed with faith. Simply hearing or knowing God’s promises is not enough; we must actively believe and respond to them. Our will, our confession, and our obedience are all part of the process that brings God’s Word to fruition in our lives. [12:09]

- The Condition of Our Hearts Determines the Harvest
Jesus taught that the Word of God is sown into different types of soil, representing the varied responses of our hearts. Hardness, shallowness, and distraction can all prevent the Word from taking root and bearing fruit. Only a receptive, understanding heart will see the promises of God fulfilled and experience lasting spiritual growth. [16:10]

- Culture and Distraction Can Quench God’s Power
Even the presence of Jesus Himself was not enough to overcome the unbelief and cultural resistance in His hometown. Our environment, the voices we listen to, and the distractions we allow can limit what God wants to do in and through us. We must be intentional about cultivating an atmosphere of faith, both personally and corporately, so that God’s power is not quenched. [21:19]

- Faith Is the Key to Unlocking All Spiritual Understanding
Jesus said that understanding the parable of the sower is foundational to understanding all His teachings. Faith is the principle that unlocks the mysteries of the kingdom and enables us to receive, respond to, and bear fruit from the Word of God. If our hearts are not ready to receive, even the greatest truths will remain unfruitful in our lives. [23:35]

### Bible Reading

1. Hebrews 11:6 (ESV)
> And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

2. Matthew 13:3-9, 18-23 (ESV) – The Parable of the Sower
> And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.”
>
> “Hear then the parable of the sower: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

3. 2 Peter 1:4 (ESV)
> By which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

### Application Questions

1. The sermon said that faith is the only way to please God, not just one way among many. Are there areas in your life where you’ve been relying on religious activity or good intentions instead of real faith? What would it look like to shift from “doing” to “trusting” in those areas? [01:43]

2. Think about the “soil” of your own heart. Which type of soil do you most identify with right now—hard, shallow, distracted, or good? What is one step you can take this week to make your heart more receptive to God’s Word? [16:10]

3. The sermon gave examples of “faithless actions” like making big decisions without consulting God or obeying rules without believing. Can you think of a recent decision or action where you left faith out of the process? How could you invite God into those decisions moving forward? [04:47]

4. God’s promises are powerful, but the sermon said they remain “dormant” unless mixed with faith. Is there a specific promise from God’s Word that you know but haven’t really believed or acted on? What would it look like to take a step of faith regarding that promise this week? [12:09]

5. The sermon talked about how culture and distractions can quench God’s power, even in a church setting. Are there specific distractions, voices, or cultural influences in your life that are making it hard for you to trust God? What practical step can you take to limit their influence? [21:19]

6. Jesus said that understanding the parable of the sower is the key to understanding all His teachings. How might your approach to reading or listening to God’s Word change if you focused more on the condition of your heart than just the amount of information you receive? [23:35]

7. The pastor mentioned that faith is not passive, but active and living. What is one way you can actively “contend for” or “walk in” God’s promises this week, rather than waiting for them to happen automatically? [12:09]

Close in prayer, asking God to give each person a heart that is good soil—ready to receive, believe, and act on His Word.

Devotional

Day 1: Faith Is Essential to Please God
Without faith, it is impossible to please God, and faith is the non-negotiable starting point for any meaningful relationship with Him. Faith is not just one way to approach God—it is the only way, and any attempt to satisfy God without it is utterly futile. This truth calls us to examine whether our actions, prayers, and religious activities are truly rooted in trust and belief, or if we are simply going through the motions. God delights in a heart that trusts Him, and He desires us to approach Him with genuine faith, not just religious routine. [01:43]

Hebrews 11:6 (ESV):
"And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him."

Reflection: In what area of your life are you relying on your own strength or routine rather than truly trusting God in faith? What would it look like to surrender that area to Him today?

Day 2: God’s Promises Require Our Faithful Response
God has given us exceedingly great and precious promises, but these promises only become effective in our lives when we mix them with faith. Just as seeds remain dormant until placed in the right conditions, God’s promises require the fertile soil of a believing heart to bear fruit. It is not enough to simply hear or know God’s promises; we must actively trust, believe, and respond to them for them to transform our lives. God invites us to be partakers of His divine nature, but we must choose to receive and act on His Word. [12:09]

2 Peter 1:4 (ESV):
"By which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire."

Reflection: What is one promise of God that you have heard but not truly acted on in faith? How can you take a step today to mix your faith with that promise?

Day 3: The Condition of Your Heart Determines Your Fruitfulness
The parable of the sower teaches that the Word of God is like seed, and the condition of our hearts—the soil—determines whether it will bear fruit. Jesus describes four types of soil: the wayside (unreceptive), stony ground (shallow), thorny ground (distracted), and good ground (receptive and fruitful). Only those who hear, understand, and receive the Word with a ready heart will see lasting fruit. Our heart’s posture matters deeply; distractions, worries, and lack of understanding can choke out God’s Word, but a receptive heart will yield a harvest. [16:10]

Matthew 13:3-9, 18-23 (ESV):
"And he told them many things in parables, saying: 'A sower went out to sow. He who has ears, let him hear.' ... 'Hear then the parable of the sower: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.'"

Reflection: Which type of soil best describes your heart right now? What practical step can you take today to cultivate a more receptive heart for God’s Word?

Day 4: Faith Unlocks the Power of God’s Promises
God’s promises are like seeds, but unless we respond in faith, they remain dormant and unfruitful in our lives. Just as two compounds must be mixed to create a strong bond, faith must be joined with God’s Word for His power to be released. God has chosen to involve us in the process—He throws out the seed, but we must prepare the soil and receive it. The fruitfulness of God’s Word in our lives is not automatic; it depends on our willingness to believe, receive, and act. [14:57]

Romans 10:17 (ESV):
"So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ."

Reflection: What is one area where you have been waiting passively for God to act? How can you actively respond in faith to God’s Word in that area today?

Day 5: Your Faith and Heart Posture Affect the Community
The faith and readiness of your heart not only impact your own life but also influence the spiritual atmosphere of your church and community. Just as Jesus was limited in doing miracles in His hometown because of their lack of faith, our collective faith can either quench or release the anointing and power of God. When we come together with hearts full of faith, ready to give, pray, and minister, we create an environment where God’s presence can move powerfully. Your faith matters—not just for you, but for those around you. [21:19]

Mark 6:5-6 (ESV):
"And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching."

Reflection: How can you come to church or gather with other believers this week with a heart full of faith, ready to encourage and minister to others? What specific action can you take to help create an atmosphere of faith?

Quotes

How many know people can do religious activity without faith? Isn't that right? I don't mean hard, but people do it. Well, this is a religious thing to do, but it's really not faith. Giving without believing. Obeying rules without faith. The Apostle Paul calls this in Galatians 3, the works of the law. [00:04:04] (19 seconds)  #WorksWithoutFaith Edit Clip

Faith, to be persuaded of something to the point of entrusting yourself totally in. That's what it means to have faith. It's active. It's obedient faith. It's not some mere intellectual assent. Or relief. That's what it means to have faith in the Lord. [00:10:15] (15 seconds)  #ActiveObedientFaith Edit Clip

As powerful as these promises are, as encouraging, and we listed a few of them last week, and inspiring all the promises of God by themselves, those promises are not going to do you any good. It's not going to fix it. your life at all. You just hear it. I'll be like the talking bobblehead up here. All you hear is like Snoopy's mom. Remember that? Won't do nothing. You just walk and go, well, that was interesting. That's good. That's nice. And it won't affect your life. [00:10:33] (30 seconds)  #PromisesNeedAction Edit Clip

God throws the promises out like seed. I'm going to grab my seed. I asked my wife earlier, can you help bring these seeds up? And I saw white come over her face. She didn't want to do that. I have these seeds sitting in the office, and God bless Kassan, and she cleans, and she keeps moving them. And some kids come in, and they say, what is that, Pastor Mike? Well, these are Kentucky. This is a Kentucky wonder bean. And this is incredible sweet corn. It's not regular sweet corn. It's incredible. And, you know, those have been in those jars for three years. I'm just thinking longer. But those seeds, how many of you know in the right environment will grow? Right? But here's the thing. I can pray all day for this incredible corn. I can fast. I can weep. I can speak the Word over it. Right? All good things. But until I put it in the right conditions to grow, it won't grow. Right? But when I put it in the right condition, I don't have to even pray about it. It's going to grow. How many with me say amen? [00:13:33] (67 seconds)  #FaithRequiresAction Edit Clip

So there's a heart response right now, even when I'm sharing, as the Word, as the Lord, I believe, is speaking, there's a heart response. Is the soil good or is it a different type of soil in our heart? And understanding the principles of faith. [00:16:51] (17 seconds)  #FourSoilsFourHearts Edit Clip

Culture can quench. Watch this. It can quench the anointing by the hearts of people, if we allow it. You know, the story is told in Mark 6. It says, Jesus could not do, when he went to his hometown, he could not do any miracles there, save just to heal a few sick folks. Well, you know, there was power in him. But there was something about the community and the culture that did not accept him. [00:21:51] (26 seconds)  #FaithAffectsWorship Edit Clip

You know, your faith when you come in on Sunday morning affects the service. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you. let that sit in. Oh, and it's okay. Church is for people to come in with lions and bears in their back and to get free. Amen. But you know, we need some people to walk in and go, I've been full all week and I'm full on Sunday. Amen. And when I walk in, I've been praying. I've been seeking God. I've been living for God, not for the devil. Come on, somebody. And I walk in church on Sunday morning. It's like I got something to give and my praise is there. Amen. Just throwing that out there. [00:22:50] (36 seconds)  #ComeReadyToServe Edit Clip

Jesus said, do you not understand this parable? Then he says this, watch. How then will you understand all the parables? What? In other words, this parable is the key that unlocks all of them. And Jesus talked about faith. Can we shout faith? If you grasp this parable of the sower is what he's saying. This principle, which is all about how people receive. and respond to, bear fruit from the word of God, faith, amen. That's what he's talking about. Then you will miss the key to unlocking all the other parables. [00:23:52] (37 seconds)  #HeartConditionDeterminesHarvest Edit Clip
