Faith, Righteousness, and God's Outreach to Humanity
Devotional
Day 1: Transforming Desires into Prayers
Our heart's desires can be powerful when transformed into prayers. Paul emphasizes the importance of aligning our desires with God's will through prayer. By doing so, we invite God's transformative power into our lives and the lives of our loved ones. This practice not only changes our circumstances but also deepens our relationship with God. Prayer becomes a conduit for God's work, turning our hopes and dreams into reality through His divine intervention. [04:00]
Psalm 37:4-5 (ESV): "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act."
Reflection: What is one desire of your heart that you can turn into a prayer today, asking God to align it with His will?
Day 2: The Peril of Misguided Zeal
Zeal for God is commendable, but when it lacks knowledge, it can lead to dangerous outcomes. Paul warns against the kind of zeal that is not grounded in a true understanding of God's righteousness. Such zeal can result in self-righteousness and misguided actions, as seen in Paul's own past as a Pharisee. True zeal should be informed by faith in Jesus Christ, recognizing that righteousness is a gift from God, not something earned through human effort. [08:35]
Proverbs 19:2 (ESV): "Desire without knowledge is not good, and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way."
Reflection: Can you identify an area in your life where your zeal might be misdirected? How can you seek God's wisdom to guide your passion?
Day 3: Righteousness as a Divine Gift
Righteousness is not achieved through adherence to the law but is a gift from God, received through faith in Jesus Christ. The law serves to reveal our sinfulness and our need for a Savior. This understanding eliminates any grounds for boasting in our own efforts, as our righteousness is entirely dependent on God's grace. Embracing this truth leads to humility and gratitude, recognizing that our salvation is a result of God's love and mercy. [16:53]
Galatians 2:16 (ESV): "Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified."
Reflection: How does understanding righteousness as a gift from God change the way you view your relationship with Him and others?
Day 4: Confession and Submission to Christ's Lordship
Confessing Jesus as Lord involves more than words; it requires submitting to His authority and aligning our actions with our faith. This submission is a reflection of a transformed heart and life, essential for true salvation. It means allowing Jesus to guide our decisions and actions, living in a way that honors Him. This genuine confession leads to a deeper relationship with Christ and a life that reflects His love and grace. [35:07]
Luke 6:46 (ESV): "Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you?"
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you struggle to submit to Jesus' lordship? What steps can you take to align this area with your faith?
Day 5: God as the Initiator of Salvation
Christianity uniquely presents God as the initiator of salvation, reaching out to humanity through Jesus Christ. Unlike human efforts to reach God through works, God's outreach is a demonstration of His love and grace. This divine initiative underscores the futility of trying to achieve righteousness through our own efforts. Instead, we are invited to respond to God's call, accepting His gift of salvation and living in the freedom it brings. [01:00:30]
1 John 4:9-10 (ESV): "In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins."
Reflection: How does recognizing God as the initiator of your salvation impact your understanding of His love and grace? How can you respond to His call today?
Sermon Summary
In Romans 10, Paul continues his discourse on the righteousness that comes from faith, contrasting it with the righteousness sought through the law. Paul emphasizes that the gospel is open to all, both Jews and Gentiles, and expresses his deep desire and prayer for Israel's salvation. He highlights the importance of turning our heart's desires into prayers, encouraging believers to pray fervently for God's work in their lives and the lives of their loved ones. Paul underscores that zeal without knowledge can be dangerous, as seen in his own past as a zealous Pharisee who persecuted the church. He warns against self-righteousness, which leads to pride and judgmental attitudes, and instead points to the righteousness that comes through faith in Jesus Christ.
Paul explains that the law was never meant to make people righteous but to reveal their sinfulness and drive them to Christ. He stresses that righteousness is a gift from God, imparted through faith in Jesus, and not something that can be achieved through human effort. This righteousness eliminates boasting, as it is not based on our works but on our faith in Christ. Paul calls for a genuine confession of Jesus as Lord, which involves submitting to His lordship and aligning our actions with our faith.
The message of salvation is available to all who call upon the name of the Lord, and Paul emphasizes the importance of preaching the gospel so that others may hear and believe. He challenges the notion that miracles create faith, asserting that faith comes by hearing the word of God. Paul concludes by highlighting God's persistent outreach to humanity, contrasting it with the futility of human efforts to reach God through works. Christianity is unique in that it presents God as the initiator, reaching out to humanity through Jesus Christ.

Sermon Clips
Paul turned his heart's desires into his prayers in other words he took the things that he longed for desired and he turned them into prayers. I think that that's an important thing for us, those things that we are wanting to see accomplish those things that we want to see done how important that we make those our prayers that we turn our desires into our prayers. [00:03:56]
The bible tells us that the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. The bible tells us that if two or three of us will agree on earth concerning anything it will be done and we would encourage you to come and join with the men agreement in prayer to see the work of god done in your children. [00:06:09]
I testify of them they have a zeal for god but not according to knowledge he thought that he was doing god a favor and seeking to destroy the church he had a great zeal wanting to do god's work but it wasn't according to knowledge and of course zeal without knowledge can be a dangerous thing. [00:08:31]
They had a zeal they they keep the law zealously you go to israel today and and you see them black long coats black hats curls underneath you know coming down the sides uh you see them with their uh at the western wall and you see them with their prayer book and their bobbing and all as they're going through their prayer book and they have a zeal for god but not according to knowledge. [00:11:04]
What happens to a person when he seeks to develop a righteous standing before god by his good works is that he first of all develops at best a self-righteousness that's all you can develop by your own good works is self-righteousness but the fruit of self-righteousness is pride one of the deadly sins. [00:12:47]
Believing in jesus christ i have been accounted righteous by god when paul was listing his pedigree in the second chapter of the philippian letter fourth chapter of the philippian letter paul said hebrew stock of benjamin circumcised the eighth day pharisee of the pharisee concerning righteousness of the law blameless. [00:15:17]
Righteousness doesn't come from our good efforts our righteousness comes as a gift of god imparted to us through our faith in jesus christ which eliminates boasting none of us can boast of how good we are or how righteous we are because my righteousness has nothing to do with my good efforts. [00:31:10]
If you shall confess with your mouth the lord jesus or more literally that jesus is lord the lordship of jesus christ have you submitted to the lordship of jesus christ jesus said not all who say lord lord are going to enter the kingdom of heaven but he that doeth the will of the father. [00:32:40]
There has to be a consistency between what i say and what i do if i say jesus is lord then to be consistent i have to be submitted to his will i have to be obedient to his commands the faith that is of the heart is a faith that transforms our actions our lives. [00:35:46]
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the lord shall be saved but how shall they call on him and whom they have not believed how can they call on him if they don't believe in him and how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard if they've never heard of jesus christ. [00:42:02]
Faith comes by hearing the word of god not by seeing miracles not by observing some spectacular spiritual phenomena but i say have they not heard and paul answers his question yes truly their sound went into all the earth and their words to the ends of the world. [00:55:19]
God so loved the world he gave his only begotten son god's the initiator man's religions have men trying to do the prayers and all of the things necessary to reach god and they have their prescribed ways by which they feel god can be touched or reached by man at least is reaching out for god.
