Day 1: When the Rooster Crows and Jesus Turns

A child’s question about tears becomes a mirror. Peter stood in a courtyard, denying Christ three times before dawn broke. Jesus turned to look at him—not with condemnation, but a gaze that shattered denial. Truth often arrives in quiet moments: a scratch on a father’s head, a child’s curiosity, or the weight of a rooster’s cry. Facing reality isn’t failure—it’s the doorway to restoration. Jesus meets us in our rubble, not to shame, but to rebuild. [01:25:40]

“But Peter said, ‘Man, I do not know what you are talking about.’ And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, ‘Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.’ And he went out and wept bitterly.” (Luke 22:60–62, ESV)

Dads who never heard “I love you” can choose to ring new rhythms. The walls we rebuild aren’t for our glory, but so our children inherit courtyards of connection, not courtyards of denial. Nehemiah’s workers rebuilt while enemies circled because they fixed their eyes on the “great and glorious” God—not their trembling hands. Worship isn’t denial; it’s defiance against despair. The fight for faith shows up as a daily, real fight, and not every fight is the right one. Peter names the truth of that fight when his confidence collapses under pressure. Luke’s courtyard moment puts Jesus’ eyes on Peter, and the denials come home as reality. That look does not disqualify him. Restoration does. Peter’s fall becomes the invitation to stop pretending and start letting grace redefine his future.

Exhaustion settles in when striving replaces trust.

Nehemiah answers with the line that turns the room: remember the Lord who is great and glorious, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes. Remember does not mean nostalgia. Zakar means fix attention on God’s character with the intention to act accordingly. Faith returns, and the people return to work. The image lands: a sword in one hand and the work in the other. Worship, word, and prayer are the weapons. The specific assignment is revealed by the Spirit. He reveals to heal.

The wall also names generational rubble. Entire families can normalize broken gates and call it just who they are. Fathers and mothers can break that pattern by remembering the Lord and refusing the wrong fights that only build monuments to self. Isaiah 41:10 steadies the heart. And when grace is on the work, the finish tells the story. In fifty-two days the wall stands, and even enemies know this was done with the help of God. The call is simple and costly: look, remember, agree, and get back in the right fight so children read a life that says, this work was done with God’s help.

They're still surrounded by broken walls. They're surrounded by external circumstances threatening to kill them. They're still being mocked. They're still being persecuted. They're being threatened, and the opposition is still real. They're tired. They're exhausted. Anybody in the room, tired or exhausted? In other words, nothing has changed in their external circumstances, and yet Nehemiah brings their focus back to to the Lord saying, remember the Lord who is great and glorious.”
