God is purifying them so that His character can be seen in them, like a refiner seeing his face reflected in gold.

First Peter says that trials show whether faith is genuine, and faith is far more precious than mere gold. Christ endured the cross because He could see the joy set before Him beyond the suffering. Trials carry the same kind of call: faith looks past the hard moment and trusts that God is preparing something beyond it. Fear is an agreement with the devil, while faith is an agreement with God. God peels back the onion one layer at a time, and His mercies remain new every morning. Wisdom is not arriving at a place where nothing needs to change. Wisdom carries peace because it has learned to trust God through pain, struggle, and the process.

The battle also happens in the mind. Philippians calls the mind to fix itself on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and worthy of praise. God transforms a life as His Word moves from the mind into the heart and becomes who that person is. The church grows stronger as hurting people humble themselves, ask for help, share their lives, and learn to see what God is doing instead of only rehearsing what is wrong.
