Faith is not something people simply have. Faith is something people grow, use, and live out. God’s word calls believers to nourish faith, trust the unchanging Christ, and move while the storm is still there. Faith has to decide whether it will believe what it sees and feels, or whether it will believe what God has said.
Numbers 13 gives a clear picture of that choice. God brought Israel to the edge of the promised land and said, “I’m giving” that land to the children of Israel. The promise existed before Israel saw the problem. The twelve spies saw the same fertile land, the same fortified cities, and the same giants. Ten spies said, “We can’t,” while Caleb and Joshua said, “Let’s go up at once and take possession.”
The ten spies revealed more than a giant problem. Their words, “We are like grasshoppers in our own sight,” revealed an identity problem. Fear defeated them in their minds before any enemy met them on a battlefield. Fear magnified giants, weakness, lack, and failure, while Caleb and Joshua magnified God. Faith does not pretend giants do not exist. Faith refuses to believe giants are bigger than God.
Faith can be blocked by fear, confusion, qualified faith, general faith, wrong tense faith, comparative faith, and indecisive faith. Fear asks, “What if it goes wrong?” Faith asks, “What if God is faithful?” Confusion may not understand what God is doing, but trust does not require every answer. Qualified faith says, “I’ll trust You if,” but faith trusts God’s character even when it cannot predict the outcome. General faith believes God can help somebody else, while personal faith says, “God, I am trusting You.” Faith is now faith, not merely someday faith, and faith eventually moves its feet.
Peter’s empty fishing net becomes the picture of disappointment, failure, unanswered prayer, and every reason to stop trying. Jesus tells Peter to take the same empty net and put it back into the water. Peter does not deny that he toiled all night and caught nothing. Peter says, “Nevertheless, at Your word, I will let down the net.” The empty net does not get the final word. Giants do not get the final word. Failure does not get the final word. God does.
Christ gives His people an identity stronger than fear, past failure, family patterns, or present struggle. God calls them His children, forgiven, redeemed, chosen, loved, and more than conquerors through Christ. The Lord’s presence, not personal strength or cleverness, gives courage to step out again and put the net back in the water.

Key Takeaways
- 1. God’s promise comes before the problem. God told Israel that He was giving them the land before the spies ever measured the giants. Circumstances can reveal real difficulties, but they cannot cancel what God has spoken. Faith starts by giving God’s word more weight than visible opposition. [10:17]
- 2. Fear often becomes an identity problem. The spies called themselves grasshoppers before the enemy ever called them that. Fear shrinks identity until every obstacle looks enormous and every believer feels powerless. God names His people by His grace, not by their struggle, failure, or past. [12:27]
- 3. Faith trusts God without every answer. Confusion demands understanding before obedience, but trust rests in God’s character when the path is unclear. Qualified faith waits for guarantees, while real faith says, “I believe God even though.” God does not always explain every battle, but He promises His presence. [16:12]
- 4. Nevertheless turns disappointment into obedience. Peter’s empty net carried the weight of a whole night of failure, yet Jesus told him to try again. “Nevertheless” does not deny the empty net or pretend pain never happened. “Nevertheless, at Your word, I will” places Christ’s word above yesterday’s result. [23:36]
- 5. Real faith eventually moves its feet. Caleb called Israel to go up at once, and Peter put the net back in the water. Faith is more than agreeing that God can act; it responds to what God has said. The miracle came on the other side of Peter’s obedience.
