John's consistent message throughout his letter is a foundational truth for all believers. Just as a parent repeatedly reminds their children of essential habits, this divine instruction is driven into our hearts. It's a constant reminder to love God with all our being and to extend that same love to those around us. This love isn't just a suggestion; it's the very essence of our faith, flowing from God through us to impact the world. The reason we are able to love each other is because our love flows from Him. [06:43]
1 John 5:1-2 (ESV)
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments.
Reflection: In what practical ways can you intentionally demonstrate love for God and love for a specific person in your life this week, moving beyond mere sentiment to tangible action?
There is an incredible promise for every believer: whatever is born of God overcomes the world. This victory is not achieved through human effort, religious rituals, or even good works, but solely through our faith. This faith is a deep conviction that God exists and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him. It's the assurance that no matter what challenges the world throws our way, our trust in Jesus empowers us to triumph. Only faith overcomes the world. [09:38]
1 John 5:4-5 (ESV)
For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
Reflection: When facing a current challenge or difficulty, how might you actively choose to anchor your perspective in the truth that your faith in Jesus is the victory that overcomes the world, rather than relying on your own strength or worrying?
God provides a powerful witness to His Son through water, blood, and the Spirit. Water symbolizes our physical birth, just as Jesus was born into the world. Blood points to Jesus' ultimate sacrifice on the cross, redeeming us from sin. The Holy Spirit, living within every believer, bears witness to these truths and guides us with divine wisdom. These three elements are in perfect agreement, testifying to the complete redemptive work of Jesus in our lives. [17:52]
1 John 5:6-8 (ESV)
This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who bears witness, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree.
Reflection: Considering the witness of the Spirit, water, and blood, how has your personal journey of faith reflected these aspects of Jesus' redemptive work, and where do you sense the Holy Spirit inviting you to lean more deeply into His truth today?
We have incredible confidence in God: if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. This isn't about praying for whatever "funky" thoughts might be in our hearts, but about aligning our requests with God's revealed will in His Word. When our prayers are rooted in what the Bible says, we can be absolutely certain that God hears us. Furthermore, if we know He hears us, we can trust that we have the petitions we have asked of Him, fostering a deep faith that sees beyond immediate circumstances. [29:19]
1 John 5:14-15 (ESV)
And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.
Reflection: What is one specific area of your life where you desire God's intervention, and how can you spend time in His Word this week to discover and pray according to His revealed will for that situation?
John writes so that we may know we have eternal life—a "Zoe life" that is redeemed from the penalty of sin, full, and overflowing. This life is found in Jesus, and having the Son means having this abundant life. As believers, we are continually cleansed by Jesus' blood, and the wicked one loses his foothold in our lives. We are called to live God's best, pushing back against the darkness of the world, knowing that in Jesus, we have freedom from Satan's touch and the promise of a fixed world to come. You have truth living on the inside of you, not because you deserve it, but because God put it there. [39:53]
1 John 5:11-12 (ESV)
And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
Reflection: How does understanding "Zoe life" as life redeemed from the penalty of sin and overflowing abundance change your perspective on your daily existence, and what practical step can you take to live more fully in that freedom this week?
John’s closing chapter of First John is presented as a pastoral, pastoral-practical call to rooted faith and active love. Using a simple parenting analogy to explain why John circles back to the same commands, the teaching emphasizes that the twin imperatives—love God and love others—are the constant rhythms that shape Christian identity. From the opening declarations about being born of God, the address moves to the central promise that faith is the victory that overcomes the world, distinguishing faith from law, works, or mere religiosity. The testimony of Jesus is shown in three complementary signs—water (birth/baptism), blood (atoning sacrifice), and Spirit (inner witness)—which align with Old Testament types and the life-changing presence of the Holy Spirit.
Assurance is a major theme: possession of the Son means possession of Zoe—redeemed, abundant, eternal life—and believers are called to know and rest in that reality. Prayer is framed not as wishful thinking but as confident petition when aligned with God’s revealed will; such prayer carries an expectation that God hears and answers according to His word. Difficult verses about “sin leading to death” are handled pastorally: there is a distinction between believers’ occasional sins (which the blood continually cleanses) and the permanent rejection of Christ that leaves a person outside redemption. Finally, the sermon wraps with practical implications—continuing cleansing, the weakening of the enemy’s hold on a life yielded to Christ, and the obligation to let transformed hearts leak into acts of love toward neighbors—so that love for God and love for others remain the living—and repeatable—marks of true discipleship.
But you live inside of the forgiveness of sins. Jesus' blood is continually washing you, cleansing you every moment, every day, every thing, every thought, every feeling. It washes you continually. It it doesn't make light of sin, but it very much makes big Jesus and his sacrifice. And the bigger we can make that into our world, man, the more effective and the more in our minds it makes total sense. We wanna make Jesus big. And the word says that you're continually cleansed and continually washed of your sins. That's what that's talking about. Whoever's born of God does not sin. Continually cleansed.

He hears us. Man, praise God. When you're like, Pastor Toph, I don't know if God hears my prayers. Are you praying what the word says? Are you praying what God's will is? Those two are the same thing. Can I tell you, the Bible promises He hears you? He absolutely hears you. He absolutely hears you. And in 2026, if you're gonna change things in your world, you need to be confident of the fact that God Almighty that slung the stars into existence hears your prayers.

And I I think that part's important too because, don't know about you, but sometimes I don't I don't know what to do. Right? You know, a problem presents itself in life or just whatever, and you're like, man, this is tough. I don't know. What's the Bible saying? How do I figure this out? What am I supposed to do about this? Well, John reminded you, the spirit is truth, that you have the Holy Spirit living on the inside of you, and he brings truth to the inside of you. So whatever problem, whatever question you have, whatever you've been rolling around in your heart and you're like, man, I don't know, The Holy Spirit has the answer if you'll stop and you'll listen to him. God wants the best for you through the Holy Spirit, bringing truth into your life, which is pretty awesome.

Because this verse doesn't say anything about being perfect. Right? That there's no perfection inside of a relationship with Jesus other than Jesus. He's the perfect thing. So then you come into that, and it's all about a relationship, and it's all about a pursuit, but it's not perfection. It's all about a a journey and pursuing the things of God. Knowing that some things will click, and they'll they'll be added to your life, and you'll be like, oh my gosh, that's so good. And then there are other things where you're like, okay, I gotta take a little bit of time, and I gotta grow in that. And I gotta sow that back down in my heart, and figure it out, and I'm gonna do it right, and I'm gonna mess it up. You know? But a relationship with God is all about that kind of idea. And there's no burdensome part of keeping the commandments of God.

And this life is in his son. We have that life when we have a relationship with Jesus, and we have the Holy Spirit living on the inside of us. So whether you realize it or not, you have access to life redeemed from the penalty of sin kind of life. Zoe life.

We need to figure ourselves out, grow inside of that. Let the Holy Spirit minister to your heart, and then go and let that leak and change people around you. You know? Whether it's a smile, whether it's an encouraging word, whether it's an attitude that used to be this way. Okay. But now, it's a new year, and the Bible's gonna come alive on the inside of my heart, and I'm gonna choose to be this way instead, because this is what God's best for me is. Let it change you on the inside, and then let that thing leak its way onto your neighbors, your school people, your employees, your your place you work at. You come to church, man, let it let it let it leak on those folks. You know? God will use you to change lives around you. God will use you to be an encouragement around you as we love him and as we love other people in a real way.

So you gotta know who you are before you can go love people the right way. And man, I've got so many stories of just growing inside of that. You know? Sometimes we run into tough stuff as believers, and it's like, man, but I treated that person the wrong way, or I could've handled that conversation better, or, man, I was a jerk to my kids today. My goodness, I didn't I didn't love other people like I wanna be loved. But you realize that as God does a work on the inside of your heart, as you as you open up the word, and you read first John, or you read the New Testament, as you read just the Bible, let it come alive on the inside of you. And what it does is it changes you on the inside, so then you can go, and you can love other people the right way. You cannot be offended like you were. You cannot be angry like you used to be. You cannot be, well, I just hate people. I'm not talking to anybody. You know? That's not God's heart. He wants you to impact and to love on the people around you in a real way.

Put it into your heart, and watch that thing just grow out of your heart. You know? The bible talks about how your heart's soil. Right? And we put the word inside of it. God knows that, and He hears it. It's His words. He said it first. You're just repeating what He said. God, you promised this. God, you said in your word this. God, you said, because I love you, you hear me. God, there's nobody else on the planet that hears me. But God, I thank you that your word says that you do, always. God, I think it could be a thousand things. And watch that thing begin to grow you on the inside, and begin to change things on the outside of who you are. It's pretty incredible. John's digging into some really good stuff.
