Choosing Faith Over Fear: Losing Life to Find It

Jesus' word to the disciples brings a hard truth: “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace but a sword.” Jesus does not deny his mission of reconciliation with God, but he turns the old order of expectations upside down. Jesus, born in a human body and walking among humanity, comes from the God who loved humanity first and loves humanity best. God knows the hairs on each head because God put them there himself, and that kind of love gives courage when fear starts talking loud.

The cost of discipleship can stir up plenty of fear. The shadow of martyrdom stands behind Jesus’ words, first in his own coming persecution and execution, then in the fate of the disciples who will proclaim the truth from the housetops. The call to follow Jesus may not lead twenty first century followers to beheadings, but it still means leaving behind lives that no longer serve because they do not serve God. The old life looks like doom scrolling into despair, competitive consumerism, keeping up with the Joneses or the influencers of the moment, and living for fleeting wants instead of caring for neighbors.

FOMO, fear of missing out, loses its grip when God’s love becomes the measure of what truly matters. God’s count of the hairs on each head exposes the lie that a life must chase every trend, comfort, and appetite in order to be full. The catch is that walking away from creature comforts rattles cages and stirs pots. The transformed life makes other people uncomfortable because it shakes up the status quo and roughs up consciences along the way.

Jesus’ warning that “one’s own foes will be members of one’s own household” names the pain honestly. Jesus’ promise that those who lose their life for his sake will find it names the deeper truth. Fear says that losing life for Jesus sounds impossible, but nothing is impossible with God. Romans 6 brings the answer close to the waters of baptism.

Paul says that Christ died to sin once for all, and the life he lives, he lives to God. Baptism means dying to the old sinful, ornery self and rising with Christ into new life that belongs to God. Jesus has defeated sin and death, so fear no longer gets to rule. Grace and truth lift people out of lives of fear and nourish lives of faith. With lives ruled by fear, truth hurts. With Jesus, truth heals.
