Bible Reading
Matthew 21:28-32 “What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went. And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him.”
[30:19]Matthew 21:23-27 “And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?" Jesus answered them, "I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?" And they discussed it among themselves, saying, "If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From man,’ we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet." So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." And he said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
[28:45]Matthew 5:13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.”
[52:32]Observation questions
- What two actions by Jesus led the chief priests and elders to question his authority in the temple? [36:05]
- What reasons did the religious leaders give themselves for refusing to answer Jesus’ question about John the Baptist? [41:22]
- How do the two sons respond differently to their father’s request, and which son is identified as doing the father’s will? [43:01]
- What contrast does Jesus draw between the religious leaders and the tax collectors and prostitutes in their response to John’s message? [30:49]
Interpretation questions
- Why does Jesus make John the Baptist’s authority the test case for answering the leaders’ question about his own authority? What does their refusal to answer reveal about what they value? [41:13]
- The second son gives a respectful answer but does not go to the vineyard. What kinds of religious words or habits can sound faithful while avoiding actual obedience? [44:25]
- Why is changing one’s mind and acting differently such an important sign of repentance in this passage? How does this give hope to people whose lives may have begun with a strong “no” to God? [30:57]
- How does Jesus’ image of salt scattered into the world help explain the connection between worship, faith, and daily life? [52:18]
Application questions
- Is there an area where it is easy to say, “I go, sir,” but difficult to actually take the next obedient step—perhaps in forgiveness, generosity, service, honesty, or reconciliation? What might “going into the vineyard” look like this week? [44:25]
- When have concern for reputation, comfort, or approval made it harder to recognize or respond to something God may be asking? What would honest repentance look like in that situation? [42:05]
- The first son’s initial refusal was not the end of his story. Where might God be inviting a changed mind and a changed direction rather than shame or pretending? [43:53]
- Think about a suffering person or practical need that is already close at hand. What is one concrete way this group or its members could respond with more than concern or prayer alone? [47:37]
- In what settings outside church—home, work, school, neighborhood, or online—does faith need to become “salt” that brings Christ’s character into the world? What specific action could make that visible? [52:32]
- What practices help keep Bible knowledge, worship, and prayer connected to a life that actually follows Jesus rather than merely knowing the right words? [50:07]
