Bible ReadingGalatians 5:1-4 “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.”
[03:21]James 2:14-26 “What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,’ but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, ‘You have faith, and I have works.’ Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.’ And he was called the friend of God. You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.”
[14:06]Daniel 7:13-14 “I was watching in the night visions, and behold, One like the Son of Man, coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought Him near before Him. Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom the one which shall not be destroyed.”
[30:21]1 John 2:15 “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”
[35:40]Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
[39:31]Observation questions- In Galatians 5:1-4, what words does Paul use to describe life in Christ, and what words does he use to describe trying to be justified by the law? [03:29]
- James gives the example of someone seeing a brother or sister without food or clothing. What does that example show about the kind of faith James is confronting?
- According to James 2, what is the difference between believing that God exists and having faith that is active in a person’s life? [17:43]
- In Daniel 7:13-14, what is given to the Son of Man, and how long will His dominion and kingdom last? [30:46]
Interpretation questions- Paul says that a person seeking justification by the law becomes obligated to keep the whole law. Why does adding personal rule-keeping to faith in Christ change where a person is placing his or her confidence? [05:27]
- James says faith without works is dead, while Paul says people are justified by faith apart from works of the law. How do these passages fit together when works are understood as the fruit of real faith rather than the price of salvation? [22:11]
- James uses Abraham and Rahab as examples of faith that acted. What kinds of actions would reasonably begin to appear when a believer truly trusts God, even if growth takes time? [22:44]
- Daniel’s Son of Man receives worship-like service, everlasting dominion, and an indestructible kingdom. Why would Jesus’ use of this title have been understood as a serious claim about His identity? [34:14]
Application questions- Is there any way that personal goodness, religious effort, church involvement, or rule-keeping has become part of how you measure whether God will accept you? What would it look like to rest more fully in Christ’s finished work? [12:24]
- Good fruit comes from a good root. Where have you seen even small signs of repentance, changed desires, love, or obedience growing in your life? Where are you asking the Lord to continue changing you? [20:21]
- James warns against words that sound caring but never move toward action. Is there a person with a practical need—food, encouragement, help, time, prayer, or support—whom you could serve this week?
- God loves people in the world, but believers are not to love the sinful value system of the world. What messages, habits, entertainment, or pressures most tempt you to think like that system rather than like Christ? [37:21]
- Jesus is the Son of Man with everlasting dominion and a kingdom that cannot be destroyed. How does His authority help you face uncertainty, fear, or discouragement in the present?
- Following Jesus can bring outward struggle, yet He promises rest for the soul. What burden are you carrying right now, and what might it mean to bring that burden to Christ instead of carrying it alone? [39:51]
- Jesus calls for a loyal heart above comfort, approval, and even family pressure. Is there an area where following Christ has felt costly? How can the group encourage you to remain faithful with both truth and love? [42:02]
