Faith in Public: Navigating Belief and Theology

Summary

In our dialogue tonight, we explored the intersection of faith, theology, and practical Christian living. We began by discussing the public expression of faith, using Tim Tebow as an example of how public figures can face criticism for their Christian beliefs. This led to a broader conversation about the nature of faith as both personal and public, emphasizing that authentic faith cannot remain private if it is to be genuine.

We then delved into the doctrines of grace, particularly how new believers can be introduced to these profound truths through simple Bible study, such as exploring John 3. The discussion highlighted the importance of patience and the role of the Holy Spirit in opening our eyes to the truths of God's kingdom.

A significant portion of our conversation focused on the challenges of navigating theological differences within families and churches. We emphasized the need for wisdom and discernment in determining when to stay or leave a church, especially when essential truths of the Gospel are at stake. The importance of engaging in respectful and patient dialogue with those we disagree with was underscored, particularly within familial relationships.

We also tackled the often-misunderstood doctrine of limited atonement, clarifying that it is not about limiting the value of Christ's sacrifice but understanding the definite purpose and efficacy of His atonement for the elect. This doctrine, when properly understood, provides a solid foundation for assurance of salvation and underscores the unity and harmony of the Trinity.

Finally, we addressed the role of debate and division within the church, affirming that truth is inherently divisive but necessary for the health and purity of the church. We concluded with a call to the young, restless, and reformed to find rest in Christ and to grow in grace and understanding.

Key Takeaways:

1. Public Faith and Criticism: The public expression of faith, as seen in figures like Tim Tebow, often attracts criticism due to societal discomfort with overt Christian beliefs. This highlights the tension between the personal and public aspects of faith, reminding us that genuine faith cannot remain private if it is to be authentic. [04:19]

2. Introducing Doctrines of Grace: New believers can be introduced to the doctrines of grace through simple Bible study, such as John 3, which reveals the necessity of the new birth and the sovereignty of God. This approach emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit in opening our eyes to the truths of God's kingdom. [06:10]

3. Navigating Theological Differences: When facing theological differences within families or churches, wisdom and discernment are crucial. Engaging in respectful and patient dialogue, especially within familial relationships, can help bridge gaps and foster understanding. [12:31]

4. Understanding Limited Atonement: The doctrine of limited atonement is often misunderstood. It emphasizes the definite purpose and efficacy of Christ's atonement for the elect, providing a foundation for assurance of salvation and highlighting the unity of the Trinity. [19:41]

5. The Role of Debate in the Church: Debate and division are sometimes necessary for the health and purity of the church. Truth is inherently divisive, but it is essential for correcting error and maintaining the integrity of the Gospel. [51:08]

Devotional

Day 1: The Tension of Public Faith
Authentic faith is both personal and public, and it cannot remain private if it is to be genuine. Public figures like Tim Tebow often face criticism for their Christian beliefs, highlighting societal discomfort with overt expressions of faith. This tension between personal and public faith challenges believers to live out their convictions openly, despite potential backlash. The call to live an authentic Christian life means embracing the public expression of faith as a natural extension of personal belief. [04:19]

Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV): "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."

Reflection: Consider a recent situation where you felt hesitant to express your faith publicly. What steps can you take to courageously share your beliefs in a way that reflects Christ's love and truth?

Day 2: The Role of the Holy Spirit in Understanding Grace
Introducing new believers to the doctrines of grace can be effectively done through simple Bible study, such as exploring John 3. This approach emphasizes the necessity of the new birth and the sovereignty of God, highlighting the role of the Holy Spirit in opening our eyes to the truths of God's kingdom. Patience is essential as the Holy Spirit works in the hearts of individuals, revealing profound truths and deepening their understanding of grace. [06:10]

1 Corinthians 2:12-14 (ESV): "Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual."

Reflection: Reflect on a time when you gained a deeper understanding of God's grace. How can you create space in your life for the Holy Spirit to continue revealing these truths to you?

Day 3: Navigating Theological Differences with Wisdom
Theological differences within families and churches can be challenging, requiring wisdom and discernment to navigate. Engaging in respectful and patient dialogue is crucial, especially within familial relationships, to bridge gaps and foster understanding. Determining when to stay or leave a church involves careful consideration, particularly when essential truths of the Gospel are at stake. This process calls for a balance of conviction and compassion, seeking unity without compromising core beliefs. [12:31]

James 3:17-18 (ESV): "But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace."

Reflection: Think of a theological disagreement you have encountered. How can you approach this situation with wisdom and grace, seeking to understand before being understood?

Day 4: Assurance in the Doctrine of Limited Atonement
The doctrine of limited atonement is often misunderstood, but it emphasizes the definite purpose and efficacy of Christ's atonement for the elect. This understanding provides a solid foundation for assurance of salvation and highlights the unity and harmony of the Trinity. Recognizing the specific intent of Christ's sacrifice can deepen one's confidence in the security of their salvation and the comprehensive nature of God's redemptive plan. [19:41]

Ephesians 1:4-6 (ESV): "Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved."

Reflection: How does understanding the specific purpose of Christ's atonement impact your view of salvation? In what ways can this assurance influence your daily walk with God?

Day 5: Embracing Debate for Church Health
Debate and division, while challenging, are sometimes necessary for the health and purity of the church. Truth is inherently divisive, but it is essential for correcting error and maintaining the integrity of the Gospel. Engaging in healthy debate requires a commitment to truth and a willingness to address difficult issues for the sake of the church's spiritual well-being. This process, though potentially uncomfortable, is vital for fostering a community grounded in sound doctrine. [51:08]

Titus 1:9 (ESV): "He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it."

Reflection: Consider a time when you witnessed or participated in a debate within the church. How can you contribute to discussions that prioritize truth and unity, even when disagreements arise?

Quotes

I think it's a mixture of two things, um one is that people want Christ to remain private and the other is that there is in the human heart an antagonism against Christ and uh I think actually it really is as simple as that it's an expression of the heart of the natural man that wants to see Christ uh kept on the cross, demeaned and always failing. [00:04:03]

Well in America we have this cliche that says that uh our Christian faith must be personal and private. Now certainly must be personal MH but if it's going to be authentic it can't possibly be PR imagine saying that to the Apostle Paul or the Apostle Peter you fellas now you got to make sure that you keep your faith private. [00:04:50]

Well I think many of us ourselves came to the doctrines of Grace uh just by simple Bible study and personally I think that is the healthiest way to help a new believer on not by giving them a book of systematic theology but by helping them to see you know you can't go through John's gospel, for example, without uh within the context of Jesus himself and Jesus teaching learning the doctrines of Grace. [00:05:13]

You can't you can't for example come to uh John chapter 3 and the new birth without having a sense that uh if we can't see the kingdom apart from this uh Heaven birth if we can't enter the kingdom without this heavenly given birth then uh first of all we must be dead in our trespasses and sins second we must need the sovereignty of God uh thirdly when the Holy Spirit comes he opens our eyes he touches our Wills he moves our affections and he brings us into God's kingdom. [00:05:57]

Well when the church rejects an essential truth of the Gospel it's clearly time to go I mean there are times there are situations that occur in the local church where you must leave there are situations where you may leave and there are situations where you shouldn't leave and so that requires a certain level of wisdom and discernment about how serious the issues are theologically in the local congregation. [00:08:33]

Yet at the same time the doctrine is attended with so much difficulty so much confusion so much misunderstanding that we need to proceed very very carefully and sensitively to people who are struggling with the caricatures of the doctrine and it not just applies to predestination but host of doctrines in the reformed faith there are all kinds of false perceptions about what is actually taught by reform faith. [00:11:00]

Now first of all we have that term limited atonement and if there's any Doctrine of reformed theology that is mutilated by misunderstanding in caricature it's the L in tulip the classic uh acrostic that spells out the so-called Five Points of Calvinism total depravity unconditional election limited atonement irresistible Grace and perseverance of the Saints. [00:15:20]

What definite atonement means that when Christ made an atonement for sin it was not just a hypothetical atonement an indefinite atonement where the father sent the son into the world and said son I want you to to die on the cross to make it possible for all people in the world if they believe and come to faith in you in order to be saved. [00:17:01]

And when Christ came he accomplished salvation for all of the ones that the father had given to him and his atoning death covered every sin for his people including the sin of unbelief but somehow people think that Jesus died for the all the sins of everybody in the world and if that's the case then you have to be a Universalist because all the sins would include the sins of unbelief. [00:18:06]

Nothing divides like truth nothing that divides like Jesus but we have this idea that the only real Sin that you can have is dividing a church well there are churches that need to be divided and they need to be divided not over minor matters not over padillas but over subsi issues of the truth of God. [00:50:59]

And those who are of the truth hear my voice and then the next thing Jesus said but I sure don't want to divide anybody over the truth thank you for laughing but it's it's really not funny but that's what I mean they said the worst thing you can say is the truth is important and when you when you do that then what happens is the truth gets slain in the streets and anything goes. [00:51:55]

Well I'll give a brief answer and then you can close out um I think I would say find Rest In Christ um and and explore more what it means to rest in Christ you know they they say they're Restless yes we're not supposed to be restless but when we're young sometimes we are and so I would just say wait a little while and uh and grow in Grace and in the fullness of your understanding of the things of God.
