Faith in Action: Transforming Lives and Communities
Devotional
Day 1: Faith as a Dynamic Force
Faith is a dynamic force that propels us from doubt to certainty and from passive belief to active engagement. It is not merely a static belief but a transformative power that can change lives, communities, and the world. By stepping out in faith, even without seeing the full picture, we trust that God will provide the necessary resources and guidance. This active faith requires courage and a willingness to move beyond our comfort zones, trusting in God's plan and provision. [08:09]
Hebrews 11:1-3 (ESV): "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible."
Reflection: Identify an area in your life where you feel uncertain. How can you take a step of faith today, trusting that God will provide what you need?
Day 2: Centering on Christ
Our faith must be centered on Jesus Christ, aligning our actions with His mission. This focus ensures that our efforts are meaningful and impactful, preventing us from getting distracted by things that do not align with His purpose. By keeping our eyes on Jesus, we can navigate the challenges of life with clarity and purpose. This alignment with Christ's mission allows us to live a life that reflects His love and truth, making our faith a beacon to others. [13:40]
Colossians 3:1-2 (ESV): "If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth."
Reflection: What distractions are currently pulling your focus away from Christ? How can you realign your daily actions to reflect His mission?
Day 3: The Power of Community
Christianity is a team sport, where our faith is perfected in community. Each person's gifts contribute to the greater mission, and our interactions with one another inspire and encourage us. By participating in the team of ministry, our faith becomes stronger and more effective. This communal effort is essential for spiritual growth, as we support and uplift each other in our journey of faith. [17:32]
1 Corinthians 12:12-14 (ESV): "For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. For the body does not consist of one member but of many."
Reflection: How can you actively contribute your gifts to your faith community this week? Who in your community can you encourage or support today?
Day 4: Shedding Burdens
To grow in faith, we must lay aside the weights that hinder us, such as guilt and distractions. Self-forgiveness and self-sacrifice are essential in this process, allowing us to move forward and embrace the freedom and joy that God offers. By letting go of these burdens, we can experience the fullness of life that God intends for us. This act of shedding unnecessary weights is a step towards spiritual liberation and growth. [27:19]
Hebrews 12:1 (ESV): "Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us."
Reflection: What burdens or distractions are you carrying that you need to lay aside? How can you practice self-forgiveness and embrace the freedom God offers?
Day 5: Embracing Deferred Gratification
Practicing deferred gratification is crucial for the completion and perfection of our faith. By focusing on the joy of future rewards rather than immediate pleasures, we develop discipline and resilience. This mindset accelerates our spiritual growth and brings us closer to the mountaintop experiences that God has in store for us. Embracing this principle helps us to prioritize long-term spiritual gains over short-term satisfaction. [27:19]
James 1:12 (ESV): "Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him."
Reflection: What immediate pleasures are tempting you to stray from your spiritual goals? How can you focus on the long-term rewards that God promises?
Sermon Summary
In today's gathering, we explored the transformative power of faith and how it can lead us to complete the work God has set before us. Faith is not just a belief but a dynamic force that can change lives, communities, and the world. It requires moving from doubt to certainty, from passive belief to active engagement. Faith is about stepping out without seeing the full picture, trusting that God will provide the resources and guidance needed. This journey of faith is not solitary; it is a communal effort where each person's gifts contribute to the greater mission.
We discussed the importance of focus, particularly on Jesus Christ, as the foundation of our faith. By aligning our actions with His mission, we ensure that our efforts are meaningful and impactful. The journey of faith also involves refinement through trials, which purify and strengthen us. However, the ultimate goal is completion—finishing the race set before us with endurance and purpose.
The examples of Abel, Abraham, and Moses illustrate the essence of authentic faith. Abel gave his best, Abraham ventured into the unknown, and Moses sacrificed comfort for a greater cause. These stories remind us that faith often requires us to step out of our comfort zones and make sacrifices for the sake of God's kingdom.
To perfect our faith, we must remember that Christianity is a team sport. Our faith is strengthened in community, where we support and inspire one another. We must also lay aside the weights that hinder us, such as guilt and distractions, and embrace self-forgiveness and self-sacrifice. Finally, we must practice deferred gratification, focusing on the joy of future rewards rather than immediate pleasures.
By doing these things, we align ourselves with God's plan and become powerful instruments of His will. Our faith becomes a testimony, a witness to others, and a means through which God can work wonders. As we continue to grow in faith, we can speak to mountains, heal relationships, and bring about change in our communities. Let us strive to be people of active and true faith, completing the work God has called us to do.
Key Takeaways
1. forgiveness and self-sacrifice are essential in this process, allowing us to move forward and embrace the freedom and joy that God offers. By letting go of these burdens, we can experience the fullness of life that God intends for us. [27:19] 5. Deferred Gratification: Practicing deferred gratification is crucial for the completion and perfection of our faith. By focusing on the joy of future rewards rather than immediate pleasures, we develop discipline and resilience. This mindset accelerates our spiritual growth and brings us closer to the mountaintop experiences that God has in store for us.
Faith Works, how we initiate a faith in our life that can move mountains, that can change trajectories, that can heal what we thought maybe couldn't even be healed. That's the power of faith. And certainly faith is this capacity in our life to transform. When we initiate a truly powerful faith in our life, we transform our lives and our families and our workplaces and our churches and our communities. [00:03:43]
And when we have a focus on Jesus Christ, that means that the things that we do, for example, our ministries, are what Jesus would do. That's our focus. It's so easy to get off focus, to get caught up in all kinds of things that have nothing to do with the very straightforward ministry of Jesus. Who did he come for? Why did he come? What is his mission? [00:06:01]
And so what we're seeing is that if we have an assurance, if we take action in doing those things, we step out and do those things and are focused on those things, then God steps in and does amazing things. And then also we said refinement, meaning that once you start doing God's work, the enemy comes out of the woodwork and he has a way of turning up the fire. [00:06:26]
And so our faith, whatever it is God has called you to, whatever vision he's given you, whatever your purpose in life is, that will be the manifestation of that faith seed in your life. And your fulfillment as a human being will be knowing that you did what God called you to do on this earth. During our short journey here, before you know it, you'll be with him face to face, giving an account. [00:07:39]
Gives us these examples so that we know what it means in our lives to have that kind of faith. He talks about Abel and he says, by this faith, Abel gave the very best that he had, even though God didn't ask him for the very best, indicating that when you have true, authentic... you're listening to your heart, the very best that you're listening to your story, [00:08:29]
So we see that a fulfillment of our purpose in life requires these aspects of faith. To cut off things that you love for what God wants. To cut off comforts that you might want to be able to serve to God's capacity. To be able to give more than what we think we have and more than enough. These are the elements of a truly powerful and authentic faith. [00:10:52]
By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of what is visible. So, it's something out of nothing. It's creating what you need without the tangible resource, but you got the divine resource, and that's more than enough. And so we have all of these witnesses. [00:11:36]
and so what is a witness a witness is a testimony you know I used to say a prayer in the morning and I still say it I would say Lord give me an opportunity to share my testimony with someone this day and when I would say that prayer in the morning invariably God would give me some opportunity to share some good word with another it could be a life experience it just could be an inspirational word a testimony of how Christ has worked in my life [00:12:07]
Most of the Bible actually is written to groups of people, not individuals. and so what we see is that our faith is perfected in community in our interaction with each other with iron sharpening iron as it were i have a gift david has gifts alec has gifts gail has gifts carol has gifts if i keep on calling i'm going to leave someone else i'll stop but we all have gifts and the body of christ is a combination of those gifts to fulfill what god has called us to do [00:14:41]
So, I maintain that one way in which you take off that load is self -forgiveness. You see, we carry guilt, we carry blame, we carry shame, we look at our past transgressions, and when we're continually thinking about what we have done, it is very difficult to move forward. And the enemy loves that. He loves to get you into your corner pity party, you know. [00:19:44]
getting rid of or blocking things that are hindering your offense we can't just focus on the offense we've got to stop things that are blocking and hindering the offense so how do we do that well i used to meet with my ministers when i used to train ministers used to have a you know a team of ministers and we would meet on a regular basis and i would tell them you know the enemy is not just going to come and bring um bad things in front of you [00:22:56]
deferred gratification later in the scripture god says i was saying god says through the author of hebrews that look at esau esau took his inheritance and exchanged for immediate gratification and in other places god says that he hated esau that's pretty strong language so in other words god despises this immediate gratification this desire for immediate gratification you see it's immediate gratification that will continue to delay the completion and perfection of our faith [00:25:48]
