Faith in Action: Love as Our Foundation
Summary
In my sermon today, I emphasized the critical importance of grounding our teaching and preaching in the Word of God. It is essential that we, as teachers and preachers, are not led by our own emotions, thoughts, or ambitions, which could potentially manipulate our message and lead others astray. We are held to a higher standard and will be judged more strictly, as James warns us in his epistle. This responsibility is one I take very seriously, as it is crucial not to experience God's judgment for leading anyone away from the truth.
I discussed how Paul, in his letter to the Galatians, addressed the issue of false teachings that were leading the believers away from the true gospel. Paul was being persecuted for preaching the truth of the gospel, which was a sign that he was indeed teaching the correct doctrine. He warned the Galatians about the dangers of being influenced by false teachers who were trying to impose the Jewish law, including circumcision, upon Gentile believers. Paul made it clear that if one seeks to be justified by the law, they are alienated from Christ and have fallen away from grace.
The true gospel is that we are justified by faith in Jesus Christ, not by the works of the law. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. This means that our faith must be demonstrated by how we love and treat others, especially when we make mistakes or when others disappoint us. We must express our faith in a way that shows the same kind of love and grace that Jesus has shown us.
I also addressed the issue of modern false teachings, such as the Prosperity Gospel and other subtle, yet dangerous teachings that can be found online. We must be vigilant and discerning, ensuring that what we hear and believe is grounded in Scripture. Our lives of faith need to bear the fruits of the Spirit, which include love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
In conclusion, I urged the congregation to defend their faith against false teachings and to take their faith seriously. We must stand firm in the freedom we have in Christ and ensure that our faith is expressed in love. As we approach the Easter season, it is a time to reflect on the sacrifice of Jesus and the freedom and grace that He has given us.
Key Takeaways:
- Our teaching must be deeply rooted in Scripture, as it is the foundation upon which we understand God's will. When we speak from the pulpit, it is not our own wisdom we impart, but the wisdom that comes from God's Word. This is a sobering responsibility that requires diligence and humility. [29:54]
- The true measure of our faith is not found in legalistic adherence to rules, but in the genuine expression of love that flows from a heart transformed by Christ. This love is patient, kind, and self-sacrificing, mirroring the love that Jesus has for us. It is this love that fulfills the law and reveals the authenticity of our faith. [17:22]
- We must be wary of false teachings that can subtly lead us away from the core message of the gospel. These teachings often come cloaked in appealing language but lack the truth of Scripture. Discernment is key, and it is developed through a deep and consistent engagement with the Bible. [36:17]
- The fruits of the Spirit are the evidence of a life lived in step with the Holy Spirit. As we grow in our faith, these attributes should become increasingly evident in our lives. They are not just ideals to aspire to, but tangible expressions of a life governed by the Spirit of God. [34:36]
- Defending our faith is an active endeavor that requires both knowledge of the Word and the courage to stand against falsehood. It is not enough to be passive; we must be equipped to articulate and uphold the truth of the gospel in the face of challenges and deceptions. [33:22]
Study Guide
Bible Reading:
Galatians 5:1-12 (ESV)
"For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no value to you. I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love."
James 3:1 (ESV)
"Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness."
John 10:10 (ESV)
"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."
Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV)
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."

Day 1: Anchored in Scriptural Truth
The foundation of any teaching or preaching must be the solid rock of Scripture. In a world filled with personal opinions and shifting cultural norms, the Word of God stands unchanging and reliable. Believers are called to ensure that their understanding of the gospel is not tainted by the whims of human emotion or the philosophies of the age but is instead a reflection of the biblical narrative. This commitment to biblical accuracy is crucial, not only for personal faith but also for the guidance of others who are seeking the truth of the gospel. The message delivered must be one that aligns with the teachings of Jesus and the apostles, as confirmed by Scripture [29:54].
2 Timothy 2:15 (ESV)
"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth."
Reflection: How can you improve your daily study of Scripture to ensure that your understanding and sharing of the gospel are rooted in biblical truth?
Day 2: The Weight of Teaching
Those who teach and preach carry a significant responsibility, as they shape the understanding and faith of others. It is a role that should be approached with humility and a deep sense of duty, recognizing that the impact of one's words can lead others either towards or away from the truth of Christ. The gravity of this calling requires a commitment to diligent study and a life that exemplifies the teachings of Jesus. Teachers and preachers must be vigilant in their pursuit of knowledge and wisdom, understanding that they will be held accountable for their faithfulness to the message of Christ [27:37].
James 3:1 (ESV)
"Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness."
Reflection: In what ways can you hold yourself or your spiritual leaders accountable to teaching with integrity and accuracy according to the Word?
Day 3: Defending the Faith with Discernment
Defending the faith is an active duty of every Christian, requiring a readiness to identify and challenge false teachings that deviate from the core message of the gospel. This defense is not born out of a desire for conflict but out of a love for the truth and a concern for the spiritual well-being of the community. To effectively counter these deceptions, believers must be deeply rooted in the Word, using it as both shield and sword against erroneous doctrines. A thorough understanding of biblical principles is the believer's best defense against the subtle lies that can otherwise lead astray [37:29].
Acts 17:11 (ESV)
"Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so."
Reflection: What steps can you take to better equip yourself with knowledge of the Bible to discern truth from false teachings?
Day 4: Love as the Hallmark of Faith
The true measure of faith is found in its expression through love. This love is not a passive feeling but an active choice that influences every interaction and decision. It is the love that reflects the grace received in Christ, a love that is patient, kind, and selfless. As believers, the call to love is not just an ideal to aspire to; it is the very essence of the Christian life, the tangible evidence of faith at work. When faith is expressed through love, it becomes a powerful testimony to the world of the transformative power of Jesus [17:22].
1 John 3:18 (ESV)
"Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth."
Reflection: How can you demonstrate your faith through acts of love in your community today?
Day 5: Vigilance Against Modern False Teachings
In an age where information is abundant and persuasive voices are many, vigilance against false teachings is more important than ever. These teachings often come cloaked in attractive packaging, resonating with the desires and sensibilities of contemporary culture. To stand firm in the faith, believers must be discerning, able to sift through the noise and cling to the truth of the gospel. This discernment comes from a solid understanding of biblical teachings and a commitment to living out one's faith authentically, serving as a beacon of truth in a sea of misinformation [36:17].
Ephesians 4:14 (ESV)
"So that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes."
Reflection: Can you identify a current cultural belief or trend that conflicts with biblical teaching, and how can you address it with grace and truth?
