Faith in Action: Living Out Our Beliefs
Summary
In my sermon, I discussed the concept of faith and its manifestation in our actions. Drawing from the book of James, I emphasized the importance of not just being hearers of the word, but also doers. I highlighted the human tendency to talk a good talk without backing it up with actions. I also addressed the age-old question of how we know we are right with God and how we know that our faith in God is legitimate. I stressed that faith is not just about believing, but also about doing. I pointed out that faith without action is dead and useless. I also explained that faith starts when we accept the free gift of grace from Jesus, and this faith should then produce good works.
Key takeaways:
- Faith is not just about believing, but also about doing. It should manifest in our actions. [ 08:42]
- Faith without action is dead and useless. [ 15:16]
- Faith starts when we accept the free gift of grace from Jesus. [ 19:15]
- Our faith should produce good works. We don't work in order to receive, we do good works because we have received. [ 20:29]
- Our actions should align with our words. We should not just talk a good talk, but also back it up with actions. [ 09:55]

Devotional
Day 1: Faith and Actions are Intertwined
Faith without actions is incomplete and lifeless. It's like a seed that never grows into a tree and never bears fruit. Our faith should not only be a belief system but also a lifestyle that reflects our belief in Christ. It should inspire us to do good deeds and live a life that is pleasing to God. [16:43]
James 2:17 - "So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead."
Reflection: How can you demonstrate your faith through your actions today?
Day 2: Faith is a Free Gift
Faith starts when we accept the free gift of grace from God. We don't do good works to earn faith or God's approval. The only work that brought salvation to our souls was the work of Jesus on the cross. Our faith should start to produce good works because we have received this free gift. [19:57]
Ephesians 2:8-9 - "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."
Reflection: How can you remind yourself daily that your faith is a gift, not something you earned?
Day 3: Faith Produces Life
Faith that produces good deeds brings life. Just like an apple tree produces apples, a healthy faith should produce good deeds. This production is a sign of a living, active faith. [17:18]
Galatians 5:22-23 - "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."
Reflection: What 'fruit' is your faith producing in your life?
Day 4: Actions Prove Our Hearing
Our actions prove what we truly believe. We can say all the right things, but if our actions don't line up with our words, then our faith is in question. Our actions should reflect our faith in Christ. [12:20]
1 John 3:18 - "Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth."
Reflection: How do your actions align with your faith in Christ?
Day 5: Faith is a Lifelong Journey
Faith is a lifelong journey of becoming more like Jesus. It starts with accepting the free gift of salvation and continues as we daily surrender to Christ and allow Him to change us from the inside out. This change should be evident in our actions and the way we live our lives. [18:37]
Philippians 1:6 - "And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ."
Reflection: How have you seen your faith grow and change over time?
Quotes
1. "James understood something that's true about the human condition that was true over 2,000 years ago and it's still true today. We, the human people, we are really, really good at talking a good talk and not really backing it up. We are really good at gaining all of this knowledge and not really doing anything with it." - 09:55
2. "Talk means nothing if actions don't line up with it. I can say the right things all day long but if my actions don't prove what I'm saying then what is the point?" - 12:20
3. "Faith starts when we accept the free gift of Grace then we start to let Jesus changes from the inside out and that change shows up in our actions in what we do. Our faith that starts to produce good works." - 19:57
4. "We don't work in order to receive, we do good works because we have received. That one little difference is huge." - 20:29
5. "James shows us two different views here, two different types of Faith really. There's 'that' kind of faith and then there is 'the' faith. 'That' kind of faith does nothing but 'the' faith, it changes things." - 14:13
