Every human effort to earn righteousness falls short; only God can declare us righteous.
Romans 3:10, 19-20 (ESV)
"as it is written: 'None is righteous, no, not one;' ... Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin."
Reflection: In what ways do you find yourself striving to earn God’s approval through your actions, and how might you intentionally rest in the truth that you cannot earn righteousness on your own? [05:18]
God’s righteousness is given freely to all who believe in Jesus, not earned by works.
Romans 3:21-24 (ESV)
"But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus."
Reflection: What would it look like for you today to receive God’s grace as a gift, rather than trying to prove yourself worthy of it? [08:49]
Jesus is the once-for-all sacrifice whose blood brings forgiveness and freedom to all who trust in Him.
Romans 3:25-26 (ESV)
"whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus."
Reflection: Is there a burden of guilt or shame you are still carrying that Christ has already paid for? How can you surrender it to Him today and walk in freedom? [12:16]
Faith in Christ not only forgives us but welcomes us into God’s family, freeing us from fear, striving, and comparison.
John 8:34-36 (ESV)
"Jesus answered them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.'"
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you still feel like a slave rather than a child of God, and how can you invite Jesus to bring you into greater freedom there? [14:28]
Faith in God anchors us when the world is uncertain, reminding us that He is our refuge and strength.
Psalm 46:1-3, 7, 10-11 (ESV)
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. ... The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. ... 'Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!' The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress."
Reflection: When life feels shaky or uncertain, what practical step can you take today to be still and trust that God is your refuge and strength? [18:08]
God has blessed us not just for our own benefit, but so that we can be a blessing to others, making His name great and sharing His goodness with those around us. Today, the focus is on faith—what it means, why it matters, and how it transforms our lives. Many of us, like Martin Luther centuries ago, fall into the trap of striving to earn God’s favor through our own efforts, thinking that if we just do enough—pray enough, serve enough, give enough—we can make ourselves worthy. But the truth is, no amount of striving or good works can make us righteous before God. Paul’s words in Romans make it clear: all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and no one will be declared righteous by works of the law.
Yet, into this hopelessness, God speaks a new word: “But now.” Righteousness comes not from our own efforts, but as a gift from God, given through faith in Jesus Christ. This is not something we achieve, but something we receive. God justifies us—He declares us forgiven and free—not because of what we have done, but because of what Christ has done for us. The sacrifice of Jesus is the once-for-all atonement, the mercy seat where God’s justice and mercy meet, and where our sins are fully paid for.
This faith does more than just acquit us; it brings us into God’s family. We are not just set free from guilt and shame, but invited to live as sons and daughters, no longer slaves to sin or to the endless striving for approval. In Christ, we are free to rest, to serve, to give, to forgive, and to love without fear or comparison. Faith connects us to the finished work of Christ, frees us to live as God’s children, and gives us a firm foundation even when the world around us shakes. Our faith is both a blessing and a calling—a light to the world, a testimony of God’s grace, and an opportunity to bless others as we have been blessed.
Romans 3:19-26 (ESV) — 19 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God.
20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—
22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction:
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
John 8:34-36 (ESV) — 34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.
35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever.
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
Psalm 46:1-3, 10-11 (ESV) — 1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
That's what it means to be justified by God. Nothing that we do, but it's God saying, you are, yes, guilty. You have done these things, but you are free to go. And he does this freely by his grace. Paul piles on the grace language here. He double piles it freely by his grace, meaning, hey, here's a gift with no strings attached. It's Paul reinforcing the point that salvation is not achieved, it is received in faith, not because of what you've done, but because of what Christ has done for you. [00:10:26] (47 seconds) #GraceNotWorks
And what Paul is saying is that Jesus has become the mercy seat. That one day of atonement, the high priest would go into the once and for all, the blood of Jesus has been sprinkled on this place where God's justice meets his mercy, where God deals with the sin that everyone has committed, both past, present, and future. And he says it is forgiven through the blood of Christ because he has paid the penalty for humanity. It's in this moment that the righteousness of God is given to people, in faith. It's God dealing with the sin and saying, you are forgiven, not because of what we've done, but because of what Christ has done for us. [00:12:14] (50 seconds) #JesusTheMercySeat
And so it's as if God the Father, the judge, says this, you are free to go, but you're free to come. You are free to come home, because it's in faith that we who were once dead to sin are brought into the family of God. [00:14:12] (18 seconds) #FreedomInFaith
``And so we're free from these things that weigh us down, but we're free to find rest in what God has already done for us. We're free to serve others without expecting anything in return. We're free from the weight of striving because we no longer have to worry about what others have done for us. We're free to give generously because we trust the Father's provision. We're free to walk and speak in grace. We're free to forgive. We're free to show compassion and kindness because the pressure is off and God's grace speaks into our lives. [00:16:02] (42 seconds) #FreeFromSinAndStriving
See, when the world shakes, we don't have to because we know that the one who justified us, the one who brought us into his family, the one who frees us to live as his child, is also the one who holds it all together. [00:18:19] (16 seconds) #PastPaidPresentProvidedFutureSecure
And so for us, we get to live and walk in faith, knowing that our past has been paid for, that our present is provided for, and that our future is secure. And that is why our faith is so important. [00:18:36] (16 seconds) #LifelineOfFaith
And so our faith matters, because it connects us to Jesus. It connects us to the finished work of Christ. It frees us to live as a child of God, and it steadies us. It provides this firm foundation when life is unsteady. [00:21:15] (18 seconds) #FaithBlessesOthers
And so today, as we prepare to walk out of here, may we remember that our faith is an opportunity for us to live out this calling and this purpose that we have. We are blessed. In countless ways. And one of those blessings is in our faith, that connects us to the finished work of Christ, that frees us to live as His child, and that gives us a firm foundation in the unsteadiness of life. And that's an opportunity for us to bless others. [00:21:33] (32 seconds)
