Faith Grounded in Christ’s Bodily Resurrection

The gospel stands as good news that is simple enough for a child and strong enough to change the world. Romans 6:23 holds the whole thing together: sin pays wages, and those wages are death, but God gives eternal life as a gift through Jesus Christ. Death, then, is not just an idea for old age or funerals. Death presses on every person because life here is not eternal, and there is a coming point where it is over.

Paul meets the Corinthians right at that point. The Corinthians had heard Christ proclaimed as raised from the dead, but some of them were saying there is no resurrection of the dead. Their culture had trained them to think that bodies were done when death came. Greek thought treated the body like a tomb, Roman thought leaned the same direction, and the Sadducees were known for denying resurrection altogether. Paul will not let that idea sit inside the church as a minor difference.

Paul argues with plain logic. If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. Christ did not merely appear human. Jesus, who is fully God, humbled himself and took on a real human body. He ate, slept, got tired, died, and rose bodily. If human bodies are not raised, then Christ’s body was not raised either.

Paul shows what falls apart if Christ has not been raised. Preaching is vain. Faith is vain. God is being misrepresented. Believers are still in their sins. Those who have fallen asleep in Christ have simply perished. The Christian life becomes pitiful if hope is only for this life, especially when early believers faced persecution, shame, and death for the name of Christ.

The resurrection carries everything. Without it, Christianity is a waste of Sundays, VBS, witness, sacrifice, and hope. Without it, Jesus may be treated as a good man or prophet, but sin remains undefeated and death still wins. That is why attacks on Christianity so often go after the resurrection first. If the resurrection falls, everything falls with it.

But Paul does not leave the church in that dark conclusion. Verse 20 turns the whole thing with those glorious words: “But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead.” That “but” is like the “but God” of Ephesians 2. The hopeless condition is real, but God’s action is more real. Christ has been raised as the firstfruits, and because he lives, those who belong to him will be made alive.
