Step Into the Water: Faith Before the Breakthrough

Joshua 3 puts God’s people on the edge of something they have never done before. Israel cannot go backward into the wilderness, but the Jordan River is overflowing at the worst possible time to cross. God’s people stand before an unknown future, yet God has already been there. God is not bound by time, not guessing, and not worried about what is ahead.

The ark of the covenant goes first because God’s presence must lead every new season. Joshua does not build confidence on Israel’s plan, strength, momentum, or leadership. God’s vision comes before strategy, because “unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor over it in vain.” Hope Church may use excellence, preparation, programs, and human effort, but all of it belongs under God’s leading.

Joshua calls the people to consecrate themselves because “tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.” Consecration prepares the heart for the things that will come when obedience gets real. The enemy would love to bring distraction, fear, division, and discouragement right as God’s people move forward. God’s presence calls for deeper prayer, deeper unity, humility, and full dependence on him.

The flooded Jordan does not part before the priests move. The priests carry the ark into dangerous water, holding the most precious thing in Israel, and only then does God stop the river. Faith is more than saying God can do something. Faith moves in obedience because it trusts that God can do what only God can do. David brings a stone. A boy brings five loaves and two fish. God’s people bring what he has given them, lay it at his feet, and watch him do amazing things.

God’s grace lets his people get in the game instead of sitting in the stands. The miracle remains completely God’s work, but obedience gives his people a real part in the story. Faith has to precede clarity, and obedience has to precede breakthrough. God’s people are not in the results department. Their job is not to part the water. Their job is to get their feet wet.

Joshua’s crossing also requires everybody to help everybody get across. The priests stand in the river until every family, child, elderly person, tent, and possession has passed through. Every prayer, invitation, sacrifice, greeting, children’s check-in, and act of service becomes shared obedience. Launch Sunday is not the promised land. It is the Jordan, a doorway into the long mission of making disciples and sending disciples. The story must never become, “Look what Hope Church accomplished.” The story is, “Look how awesome Jesus is.”

Then Joshua rose early in the morning and they set out from Shittim. And they came to the Jordan, he and all the people of Israel, and lodged there before they passed over. At the end of three days the officers went through the camp and commanded the people, “As soon as you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God being carried by the Levitical priests, then you shall set out from your place and follow it. Yet there shall be a distance between you and it, about 2,000 cubits in length.
