When Faith Takes The Roof Off Of Your Religion

Mark 2:1-12 puts Jesus back in Capernaum, where it was noise that He was in the house. Jesus draws a packed room because His ministry keeps showing up in preaching, teaching, and healing. Mark presents a house full of people waiting on what Jesus will say and do next, while four determined friends bring a paralyzed man who cannot get there by himself.

Faith refuses to let a crowded door become a dead end. The four friends carry their companion onto somebody else’s roof, cut through it, and lower him right in front of Jesus. Faith pulls the roof off religion when it refuses to let the program, the crowd, the weather, the naysayers, or somebody else’s opinion keep a desperate need from Christ. Jesus may stop the whole program for one somebody who has come believing that He can meet the need.

Good friends honor determination and find a way. Good friends do not just ride along while the sun is shining, but put themselves on the line when the storm comes. The image of friends tearing through a roof raises a hard question about the company surrounding a hurting person: are they carrying people toward Jesus, or merely standing around offering religious commentary?

The scribes and Pharisees sit in the house as religious associates, watching, reasoning, and measuring Jesus by what their system can handle. Jesus knows their thoughts and confronts their real problem. The scribes can accept a visible miracle, but they stumble over Jesus saying, “Thy sins be forgiven thee,” because forgiveness belongs to God. Jesus proves that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins by telling the paralyzed man to arise, take up his bed, and go home.

Forgiveness exposes a paralysis that runs deeper than legs that cannot walk. Unforgiveness keeps people from moving when God moves, from sleeping in peace, and from building healthy relationships. Religion can medicate the wound without curing it, but Christ deals with the sin and the heart beneath the wound. The vertical relationship with God must be made right before the horizontal relationships can work right. The cross itself declares that reality, joining the vertical and the horizontal through Christ’s saving work.

Jesus leaves three open invitations: salvation for those who need forgiveness, a church home for those who need to be planted where God’s Word is proclaimed, and restoration for those who have been away from serving in the local church. God still calls people to get on their post, spread His love, and show a watching world what real forgiveness looks like.
