The expectation gap appears when belief says God is with His people, but life makes Him hard to see. Anxiety can take over the whole field of vision, whether it comes suddenly in an acute moment or settles in through the chronic fear that something bad might happen. God’s presence has not gone away, but attention has been captured by the thing that feels biggest.
Anxiety is not always a moral failure or an obstacle to spiritual maturity. Anxiety can be an opportunity to notice what has captured attention and what responsibility has been taken on that belongs to God. The need to be perfect, know every answer, be there for everybody, gain approval, or stay in control can make a person try to become something God already is. God is perfect, knows all things, is present in every situation, gives identity in Christ, and holds all things together.
Numbers 13 and 14 show two very different ways of looking at the same land. The ten spies saw giants, fortified cities, and a future that made them feel like grasshoppers in their own eyes. Caleb and Joshua saw the same giants, but they measured those giants against the Lord. The ten spies let fear distort their theology and identity, while Caleb and Joshua kept saying, “The Lord is with us.”
The presence of a giant does not mean the absence of God. A diagnosis, a child’s struggle, conflict, financial pressure, uncertainty, grief, or loss can feel more present than God in a hard moment. Yet Psalm 46 calls God’s people to be still and know that He is God, even while the mountains shake, the waters roar, and the nations rage. Stillness does not mean figuring everything out, fixing everybody, or getting life under control. Stillness means shutting down the outside voices long enough to remember God’s love, God’s character, God’s promises, and God’s presence.
Colossians says that life is hidden with Christ in God. Psalm 17 pictures that security as being hidden in the shadow of God’s wings. Deuteronomy says the Lord goes before His people and never leaves or forsakes them. God is behind, beside, and ahead of His people. Faith does not make someone God-sized. Christ gives strength to faithfully live as a human being while trusting God with His presence and His plan.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Pay attention to captured attention. Anxiety can turn a real concern into the only thing visible. The giant may be real, but it does not deserve the whole field of vision. God’s presence often becomes clearer when attention is honestly examined and then turned back toward Him. [07:26]
- 2. Stop trying to be God. The need for perfection, answers, approval, control, or constant availability can become a burden God never assigned. Human limits are not proof of failure; they are reminders that God is God and people are not. Trust begins when responsibility is handed back to the One who can actually carry it. [12:52]
- 3. Measure giants against the Lord. The ten spies measured the giants against themselves and became grasshoppers in their own eyes. Caleb and Joshua measured the same giants against the God who had already delivered, provided, and led His people. Fear shrinks identity when God becomes small in the mind. [21:17]
- 4. Be still and know God. Stillness is not passive avoidance of pain or a strategy for controlling outcomes. Stillness creates room for God’s voice when every other voice is loud. The mountains may still shake, but God remains refuge, strength, and an ever-present help. [23:58]
- 5. Trust God’s presence and plan. God is not discovering today’s trouble at the same time His people are. He is already ahead, already at work, and already present in what feels unknown. Faithful action can follow surrender because the results belong to God.
